Heads up guys & gals, there's a new system patch from Sony for NX. I don't think it's OS5.2, just regular patches.
Check it out!!!

Thanks for the heads up. I've got it installed, everything went fine. I had been having trouble with when my MS had been ejected in my pocket, I couldn't get the unit to turn back on and I had to do a soft reset. Looks like this patch may have fixed that.
And just so everyone knows... CF Memory cards DO NOT work after using this patch. You know we were all wondering.

Compatibility for Memory Stick media formatted on an PEG-NXxx device with external Memory Stick Adapters
Resolves low battery issues with the Communications Card
Improves Communications Card recognition
Improves ATRAC3 Audio sound quality
Resolves various power-up issues involving Memory Stick media and the Communications Card.
Improves MP3 playback for 96kbps encoded MP3 files

Haven't installed it yet, but I've got a question.
Are these RAM-resident patches, or do they get flashed at any point. Judging by the instructions, it sounds like they're RAM-resident.

Hmm.. I installed the upgrade as per Sony's instructions and have noticed a bit of my RAM has been eaten away and the Avx AT3Decoder has not been upgraded to v2.00 like the isntructions claimed it shoulfd have been...

Same here urban75 geez you would think that the update would be tested and work according to the websites instructions. Good one Sony

Thankx KongK - I just checked yesterday and no updates!
BTW ever since I got my NX I've been having trouble w/ my memory stick not consistently being recognized by the MS-reader that's built into my Viao. Looks like this patch might fix it. . . . .

I haven't had any problems reading my memory stick from either my VAIO desktop or Laptop.

Not only did they chew up a small amount of RAM, the older versions of the software that was replaced is still there. Anyone know if it is safe to remove them?

It upgraded it to v 1.01, the same as the MP3 decoder. I'll never use the ATRAC3 format anyway.

I've just installed the patch. I think these are RAM resident patches. There aren't of the usual flashing procedure that came with the old OS3.5 upgrades unless these patches writes directly to flash like jacksprat (highly unlikely).

>>>

<<<
I just installed the Update/Patches and will verify that these install in RAM, retaining the old versions in ROM :( So, I'm now wondering if JackFlash or some-such program can be used to overwrite the old pgms in ROM... 303K wasted on OS5 updates!
Another issue is that the Versions listed for the 5 modules did not all match. AvxAT3Decoder is supposed to be 2.00 after the update, but mine says 1.01. It's probably a typo, but wondering if anyone can confirm it?

Yes, same here. In the end I decided to forego the patch as it didn't address anything I was concerned about.

I will skip this too. The not-turning-on-after-MS-eject problem has happened to me a few times, but just doing a plain reset solves it, so I am not worried. My NX is working great, I donīt want to mess it up.

Sony says it only works on the NX sold in US. Anybody knows if it would work on the NX sold in Hongkong? Any risk if I try to install the patch?
Tks.

I bought my NX in Singapore. The Clie support page for www.sony.com.hk links to the same site where I first got the update from. I guess it'll work for HK units as well.
Give this a try :-

I installed it last night even though it did'na address anything that I really use. I did notice that the install was only semi complete. Everything that was supposed to be upgraded was with the exception of Avx AT3Decoder. It should have gone to version 2.00, but instead there are now 2 versions on my handheld 1.00 and 1.01. As I don't use the AT3 codec for anything, I'm not too particularly worried about it.
Other than that, the "upgrade" appears to have gone swimmingly.

No ATRACPlus(64 kbps cd-quiality) support added to my NX??? Still with the OLD ATRAC3(128 kbps cd-quiality). Also, no MS PRO??? Maybe next one will do it for me.

Does anyone know if this patch gives the NX MSPro support? Or will that be yet another patch Sony releases to us piecemeal?
Brayder, if you're listening, we desperately need JackSprat!!!

I think that'll be another patch. It's likely that they'll make that a worldwide patch that'll also incorporate some other fixes that they've got "saved up".

I downloaded it last night but didn't have time to load it. I am still trying to get comfortable with YiShow vs ZLauncher (YiShow is winning so far).
I don't mind updates, but I do mind if they waste the limite space we have already. Sony should make them ROM files or put out one batch and have us send them in.
I will look for more feedback on the update before I touch it.

Same here. I'm very happy with my NX70V. I'm amused by the number of incessant anti-Sony whiners on this board. I'd suggest they buy something else, but they all seem to enjoy being miserable and angry so much that I wouldn't want to disturb them. ;)

Well I installed the update and only difference that I found was I lost memory...
I also noticed that I now have double files.
The update did not rewrite over the existing files it added additional ones.
Guess I will leave it on for now...
By the way is there a way to remove them???
How would I know which was which???
Just in-case I lean more over to the need for memory over uhhhhhhh...

I installed the updates a few days ago on my NX70V, & have not had any issues with the software. I've run the video & camera w/o problems. I am not an amateur user, I've been using a Palm device since the original intro., am down to ~2MB RAM & am using ~50MB on a MS. I think most of the issue are likely due to software conflicts with "legacy" (programs prior to OS5) type programs.

WOW!
This patch works GREAT!!! :D
I installed this Sony patch on my Toshiba e740 and it did WONDERS for the PocketPC OS!
The internal WiFi card drain on the batter when ativated used to only last about 1 hour and 45 mins before completely draining the internal battery, but now, NOW I get 2 hrs!!! (Yeah! - 15 more minutes of net stumbling!) :D
The 400 MHz processor now really runs at 400 MHz! (not 200 MHz because of the PPC OS crippling the system) Thanks again Sony! :)
Instead of taking up more memory like some people are experiencing here, my 64MB of internal RAM now appears to the OS as 640 MB of RAM!
I mean... really... who will EVER need more than 640kb of RAM???? ;)
Now, I have even more space to run all of those bloated PPC OS programs. Who cares if the average program size is 2 to 5 MB when you have 640MB to play with!!! Heck, do the math 640/5=128! I could have almost 128 programs loaded internally :), instead of the measily 13 that I can only fit in it before... :(
And of course the Best part of the OS upgrade of all I get this really cool looking animated "CLIE'" logo upon bootup! All my other PPC fiends are so jealous! (If only this Sony update worked on their iPicks and thier Jordanies!) :P
:D (with tongue firmly planted in cheek!)

If you notice the files sizes are different. Additionally don't even think about trying to delete the previous/still existing files. Of course if you want to render your Clie non-functional... :)

I did not get a chance to find the viscious program that was conflicting, yet as soon as I installed the patch and did a reset since it asked for one-it would start up, critical error, and be forced into a reset. I had to just do a hard reset and synched all my stuff back. A patch shouldn't have a problem with software since it should only be effecting the apps it is updating. Oh well, hopefully next update will be more friendlier.

I am wondering if anyone has any input about 96 kbps encoded MP3's- are the quality really better than prior to patching?
After few days of use, felt like NF3 crashed less. AMOF it did not crash since the update. Strange that the update info from Sony never mentioned about it.

It's just like the update files we got for the N710 (not necessarily the upgrade to the N760). Everytime I had a hard reset, I had to remember to install the upgraded files.
Things will get even more frustrating when Sony releases the MSPro patch, hopefully it won't be too large. almost 400k for all of these is a bit painful.

Ok call me stupid but why when I had a update with my PAlm V, m505 did it flash /
install into the ROM???
To continue on stupid questions, how do most of the people copy and past previous
statements in bold??
I copy, paste, original remarks / quotes, and its regular type...
I have tried to copy and paste into my Netscape mail program and chose bold but
still plain when I cut and paste back into the reply screen...
Stupid can also mean green...
Thanks

First answer: Because Sony isn't Palm. I don't mean to sound flip, but Sony has their own attitude and methodology about OS upgrades and patches.
Second answer: Because we're not doing cut & paste, we're just hitting the quote button, and it automatically puts in both the quote and the bold.

I have also installed the NX70 system update patch, all the files are listed ok as per website. Haven't tested the MP3 96kbps quality yet but here's the first anomaly report:
I let my unit drain its charge till almost 0% before hooking it up to recharge. This morning, turned on the unit, found that folders in MS was *MISSING*. Went to Clie Files, pointed to the "Launcher" folder, yep, they're all still there. Went back to Main screen and they came back up mysteriously. Hmmmm.. what gives?

Why did you let your unit discharge almost to zero? You risk damaging your battery and losing everything that was installed in RAM.

Hi Larry,
Was too busy tinkering with the unit until the backlit turned off, squinted at the display, saw 0% and immediately turned off the unit & hooked up the recharger. So, it did not blink out on me.
But.. " damaging the battery?" Didn't know that could happen with a gruelling discharge. What's the theory?

Lithium-Ion batteries have a "certain" number of times they can be fully charged. The more times you "top" them off, the better. Letting then drain to 0% charge weakens them, and cuts into their effective life.

Yes. it's true about the battery's embedded circuitry. I still believe it's not good for it. The main reason I had asked is that some advocate running the battery all the way down and recharging fully as a way to extend capacity. Batteries of any kind do not like to sit, they need exercise. Lithiums are different from Ni-Cads and require strict controls built into the Lithiums. They work best by keeping them topped off. Obviously the battery will run down during usage, that can't be helped. I just feel there is no need to do it intentionally, that's all.
