SJ-30 Discontinued, now what?

The SJ-30 has recently been discontinued. The good news is that people should be able to find excellent bargains as existing inventory is dumped. The question is, what will replace it and when?

I predict the replacement will be announced on Feb 25th. It'll support PalmOS 4.1 and the new larger memory sticks. Maybe it will have virtual grafitti. Anything else possible? The battery life on the SJ-30 is good, but whatever miracle they can pull off to make it better would be really appreciated. I guess a user replacable battery is unlikely, really any major changes are probably unlikely, but we can dream right?

What would you hope or expect for the next model?

Secondly, where did you get this information from? Not only does sonystyle.com still sell the SJ30s, it says "NEW" next to them.

I am in touch with a reseller of the SJ-30s and it seems that most places are backordered due to high demand not due to discontinuation. Sony is still taking orders for them from resellers.

What do you base your statement of the SJ30 being discontinued on?

Anyways, I agree. We can't rely on gossip to learn that the SJ30 is discontinued, we have to wait for official word from Sony.

if this is true, its a shame top have this great product to be discontinued too soon.. sj30 is best bang for the buck clie so far (for me at least :)

SJ-30 is one of Sony's newsest models. Expect it to be around for a while. It was a hot seller during Christmas, most retailers sold out. I know, I was looking for one. Sony has hit the sweet spot, with price and features. The real story here is the T-665 will soon be discontinued for the upcoming SJ-40. It's to have the same case as the SJ-30 with the audio features like the T-665. The SJ-40 will complete the entry level line of Clie's. It seems that many Clie's have a short product life, some less than a year.

I scrambled last week but found one of the last SJ30s in the Houston area. In doing so, I ended up talking to a buyer at BestBuy and talked to an order supervisor at 1-800-THESHACK (Radio Shack's central ordering thingie). The BestBuy guy said their listings said the item was discontinued, and the Radio Shack people said the same thing. Both echoed "what we have in stock is all we'll have of this specific model."

I don't give this 100% credence, but it's a pretty good indication, and it's certainly not the official Sony word. Also, there was a blurb at...??? (I looked on BrightHand, but I think it may have been in a lost thread here) about a conversation with Sony rep at CES who stated that the SJ30 was discontinued, but not the line, that Sony would have a new SJ model in the very near future.

I still bought mine (and love it...) becuase it did what I wanted and wasn't concerned about being "discontinued" since Sony shared the same connector with the T and SL/J series...felt like accessories would continue on down the line.

Well, once Sony stops selling them on their main page and stops marking them as a "New" product, then we'll know for sure.

Until then, I'm very inclined to think that the demand far exceeded the supply and that is why most places are backordered.

That's what's funny (strange) about this...when I asked if they were backordered, both places said effectively "no, they are no longer available."

We'll see. Rumors abound about Sony, and they are rarely predictable!

Yea, last week when I was trying to find a SJ-30, I went to circuit city and they said they didn't have any but were going to get a shipment later that week.

I ended up getting it from sonystyle...but they did indeed have them when I went back later that week for somthing else.

Mwave.com which generally sells them has on their site that they are backordered and the ETA of stock is something like 2/20/03.

I'm fairly sure that Sony is just severly backordered on this product. The demand for this product overwhelmed their supply and expectations.

Call Sony up and ask them if this product is discontinued, it's not!

My hopes of a replacement would be a model with the same exact form factor (I'd hate to have to wait for another case, for a new form factor) with Palm OS 5.0, 32MB of RAM (28MB or more user accessible), virtual graffiti and a polyphonic speaker. I don't care for a digital camera or all of that glitz. My Mom can't wait for me to get another Clie either because that means she would get my SJ30 and she could get rid of her T415.

Remember the SJ-30 is supposed to be a midrange color device. Its replacement probably isn't going to have more features than the new top of the line model :)

My bet: full screen with virtual graffitti, all else the same (maybe improved speaker).

I can't see them doing much else, with what they're doing with the other models above. Much depends on what they do to the T665 replacement model, which I guess is supposed to be a notch above the SJ30.

As for me, I've been pleasantly suprised by the speed of the SJ. I had a Handera330 before, same processor, but the SJ is *much* peppier.

But all these cool aps in color I can now have have been a great distraction and I've not been able to do my work for days... :cool:

I will not be surprised if Sony Upgrades the SJ30 six months from intro (they did it to the NX model).

But I am expecting that - does not mean I will change every time there is a new model. I am enjoying my SJ30, I get what I need out of it (my wife is using the NX70 a lot faster but I can live with my SJ30 for awhile).

When will I upgrade?
Two years or the least one year maybe, but not every six months even if I can afford it - that is if there is a "major" improvement (this is subjective of course to one's personal use)

Amazon.com reports the SJ-30 is discontinued.  They also have a listing for an SJ-30LB "new item, picture coming soon".  No other info...

I just bought my SJ30 last week as my replacement for my M515.
I was hoping to see a SJ30 case with the configuration of T665c. (66Mhz is what I mean...I dont need a MP3 player.)

and if the rumors are true that SJ40 is coming out....

nvm..I will wait till a NX like, but without the keyboard, camera, and mp3 player....some rumors said that it is called T700c.

I beleive all of the confusion about the SJ-30 being discontinued is due to the fact of the Longshoreman's strike out west. Do you remember back in Aug-Sept. timeframe. I still here that there are thousands of constainers that have not shipped to their destinations yet. When I asked Circuit City about this they confirmed it. Can anyone else confirm this?

If Sony releases a SJ-40 with advanced audio and enhanced ir I will definitely cancel my order for a $199.99 Clie SJ-30 (Backordered). Those are the features that give the T615 a little viability. Now if they include MP3 playback I am totally sold on it!!!!!!!! I have a 64 MB Memory Stick and am interested in getting a 128 MB but still can't convince myself I need it!!
