View Full Version : Aldons Crossing High Res
I am dying to try out this RPG, the only thing holding me back is the lack of high-res, and i think there is a new version in the works that will have high-res, does anybody know when this will come out, i thought it was scheduled for december?

Does a game have to be hi-res to qualify it as "worth having a look"? The game is a great RPG with a lot of depth, playability and replay value. The fact that it is lo-res (160x160) has little impact on gameplay. (I hope I don't sound sarcastic, but I am asking a question which has persisted for years - "Does better graphics deliver a better quality game?" - personally, I don't believe so...)
Personally, I would rate Aldons Crossing as better than DragonFire.

Agreed. I tried Dragon Fire before Aldons Crossing and end up buying Aldons Crossing. It's so rich in graphics and smooth scrooling (someone on another thread mentioned about moving diagnally :D) that you quickly dismissed the need for it to be hires.
Get it, you won't be disappointed :)
Oh, i really want it, however, if i download it, and a month later a high-res version comes out, i wouldnt be very happy cause i would have enjoyed it more if i had it high res, and if i play it again i would already know the story, howver if a high-res version is not planned for another 6 months or so, well then i am going to go get it.

I'm not giong to speak for the dev team about release dates but you should know that one of the developers was recently in hospital and is now home recovering so they are prob. behind on the schedule.
HiRes or not This is simply the best RPG for the palm if you want to wait to play it in HiRes You are missing out a great game you could be playing now.
Oh ok, do you know if the highres version of aldons crossing will have the same story and characters and such, or will it be a whole different storyline?

Woohoo! Hi-res would be nice. It would add to the enjoyment of an otherwise great game.
But the fun is trying to level up the characters and beating the mini-adventures .... and avoiding getting caught by my bosses at work! (That is an adventure in itself!!!) :)

Sweet! Would like to see a Hi-Res version for Aldon's Crossing! I love this RPG! :D Anyone have any finished MOD's for it? I have Ox-Bow but I found that quite easy. :P
yorrick, its important to look every now and then away from the PDA screen and look for example to manuals or the computer screen so that it looks like you doin some real important business stuff ;) (and dont forget to use the pause mode during interrupting gaming).
Oh ok, if it is planned, i think i will wait for the highres, so i will be able to enjoy the whole game more.

Well, I think you should still try the game. I bet you'll love it once you start playing it. :)

When approximately will be the release of the Hi-Res version?

Illusions - don't fret about the date of hi-res. Try the lo-res game. You'll find yourself getting hooked into it.
When Hi-res comes out, registered users are eligable for free upgrades to this (unless they have changed thier policy...)

I wanted to try the low-res, but it just does a fatal error and puts my NX into a reset loop where it must be hard reset to work again.
Good to hear the Hi-res is coming! Consider using 320x480 and having the bottom 160 be inventory, money, etc. That way those with hi-res+ screens get extra benefit and can use our whole screen, but those with 320x320 don't miss out on anything graphics-wise :).

Hi there, I've the same problem of "loop of death" but with a NR70.
First time I've installed without disabling hacks and HI-res. Crash after character generation and then crash as soon as it restarts after reset! Ouch. Try to restart it with low res (keeping the up button pressed): ok it starts, but there must be some file that causes some error during the startup...mhh...look up the files:
- with PiDirect FileManager: crash during the scan of files
- with FileZ Filemanager: crash during the scan
- with MSGate filemanager: crash during the scan
Sic. No way. There MUST be some file that Aldon's creates that offends the clie. I do not remember HOW but I managed to delete the PRC and the two PDB files...still during the files scan the clie locks.
Damn. Ok, hard reset and restore backup (fortunately created BEFORE Aldon's installation). Ok, it works.
Now start again: install it, disable HiRes, disable Hacks (ALL) and CRASH again somewhere in the map (Fatal Exception!), after a while. Sic. This time, fortunately, it restarts correctly BUT still locks during file scan. Another backup restore.
Tried another time disabling skins, hacks, whatever-the-hell-could-interfere...no way. Another backup restore. Sic :-(
After a night of wrestling fight with my Clie still I haven't managed to make it run.
BTW: I have not installed neither Text Plus nor Switch Dash.
Any idea Anthony or who else? Thanks...
Andrea (Italy)

Hi Andrea,
Well, with the hi-res lo-res thing, there are several things that could be the problem. The loop of death thing, I have no idea. One of my friends has an nr70 as well and it works great for him. Granted, both he and I (I have a nx70v and he has a nr70) are pretty boring when it comes to files we have installed, I only have the splashwallet and aldon's crossing, and he just has aldon's crossing. We don't have a filemanager or anything like that installed.
So here is what I would try:
1. Verify that you are installing the 3.5+ version of aldon's crossing.
2. Install the prc and the 2 pdb files (aldonmain and aldoncrssng).
3. Go to the prefs section and disable hi-res for Aldon's Crossing (I know on 5.0 devices this is NOT neccesary, but on 4.0+ devices it might be needed).
4. If that option does not exisit (I cant remember if the nr70 has a disable hi-res on a per application basis) run the game, and from the title-screen select Menu->Options->Preferences and the disable Fast Draw (uncheck the box).
Fast Draw and hi-res are incompatible on 4.0 and 4.1 devices. On my old n760c I could use Fast Draw provided I had turned off hi-res for Aldon's Crossing in the Clie's Prefs panel.
Also, while Aldon's Crossing will work and run from a memory card, like any other application running from the card, there must be enough free flash memory for it to run.
If you want to, you can send me an email at adavis@constantgames.com with a list of software you have installed and I can try to figure out what the problem might be.
Thank you, and please let me know how it goes,
Anthony Davis

Thanks for the answer Anthony.
Unfortunately I've to say that I've tried everything you wrote on your msg. Specifically:
1) Yeah, installed 3.5 (I've seen the PRC file a lot of times during install :-))
2) did it
3) Disabled Hires
4) I've not tried this last one, but you said that this is necessary if you use also Hires.
The game has been installed on the internal memory, not on Memory Stick.
I have no stuff like FastCPU or Afterburner.
Still I don't know what could be the cause of this error... :-)
Thanks:

Hi Andrea,
I almost forgot the most obvious thing, though I doubt this is it. Make sure you are installing 1.0.5, and also to be safe, download the binaries from our website. I'm sure you have already done this, but I have to say it anyway (to be sure).
Number 4 is not necesary if you disable hi-res from the Clie Prefs Panel for Aldon's Crossing (which as I understand is enabled by default for each application installed).
Another thing you might try is visiting our forums. There are a lot of helpful people there who know and use a lot more third party software than I do.
Still, if you send me a list of everything you have installed (3rd party) I can try and figure out what the conflict is and resolve it.
The only time in the past where we had a conflict was with an older version of JBBACKUP that was later resolved. So it is possible that there is some other application or hack that is doing the same.
Thank you,
Anthony Davis

My boss is used to say that "Informatics is NOT an exact science...it's a chaos science". This time is true because now it works.
But do not ask me how :-)
After writing that last message yesterday I decided to make a last attempt: I cleaned the clie from everything that could be connected to AC, then I installed it from scratch.
Then I made these steps:
- installed in main memory
- disabled hi-res for AC
- disabled Jog-Assist for AC (maybe is this one?)
- disabled FastWrite in AC options panel
and now it works! Ahhh...finally :-)
I don't know if it's a problem with the JogAssist or the FastWrite option: the important concept is that now it works.
Well, occasionally I still have some Fatal Errors: one happened more than one time and specifically was in the "cemetery" quest: when I go back to the cemetery crypt for the second time and I fight with the "boss" (the one in the small isle) IF I drop my Cat during the battle at somepoint I get the Fatal Error: I've tried 3 times, same result. Then I've tried to keep the cat with me and it worked.
Seems pretty fine AC...just a couple of complaints:
- at the very beginning there is no introductory story (I missed it?). You're dropped in that world without knowing who you are or what you've to do. But that's a major complain with almost every palm RPG, and there are far worst situations (like Ancient Red - HORRIBLE - or even DragonFire - great graphics but no idea what to do apart from slashing enemies): a good examples to follow are the Gasgorf's two wonderful games, Dark Haven and Ackeron, whose had a beautiful and gripping storyline.
- in some points there is the need of too much clicks (ex: in the trades: if you want to buy and sell you have to talk with the guy two times...)
- a better path finding algorithm (to go behind corners...)
Anyway it's a great I think: I'll play with it a bit, if it will continue to be stable I think I'll register it...:-)
Thanks for your support Anthony...

The background story can be found on the website at:
http://www.constantgames.com/aldonscrossing/story.php
The rest of the story will be filled in as you progress.
I'm glad you got it to work, I'm a bit concerned by the Fatal Errors because near as I can tell, no one on our forums is reporting any crashes at all.
What OS version does the nr70 run?
Thanks,
ADavis

1) about the fatal errors...don't know how to help. I did have no more saved games of that point...sorry
2) About the story: well on the website is fine but I would have preferred having it displayed on screen, as an introduction. That's a preference, I know that the majority of players simply skip this. :-)
3) and last, my NR is running version 4.1
THanks again

4.1 is what my n760c is running...hmmm. I don't know what to think.
By any chance are you a mac person who is using the 1.0.5 mac binaries? I made the mac binaries on the PC and sometimes mac users have had problems in the past with file corruption.
I know that's reaching, especially since the latest mac binaries on my site verify just fine.
Oh well, if you get a savegame, I would love to have it.
Thank you,

Geeeeezzz....are you saying I am a Mac person? Are you trying to offend me? :-)
Just kidding, the answer is "no, I have a Windows (sic) PC" :-)
If I'll have more errors I'll surely keep the savegames.

You get the fatal loops doing/during what?
I use my nx70v everyday and I never have any problems with it, are you running any extra software that you can tell me about? Any help at all in tracking this down would be very much appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
Anthony Davis

I'll post here if any other problems arise (I'll note the exact error messages, too).

I will investigate dropping a pet in the middle of battle. I suspect that may be the issue.
