I was just cleaning my 2 week old Sony SJ screen, and I noticed several little hairline scratches across the screen and grafitti area. I wish my Brandos would arrive faster.

I think some of these scratches are in fact created by the shape of the clie stylus tip. Rather than a smooth 'rocket' like shape, it has a little extended tip on it. And the part where the tip suddenly widens, is sharp and will cause scratches when you hold the stylus really horizontal to the screen. I like to do this when I'm tapping on the onscreen keyboard.

Has anyone got the same problem?

Yes we all have the problem. Some use a screen protector and other say that they got the scratches even with a screen protector.

What I and others have resorted to is buying some Scotch removable tape (Blue) and putting a piece of it across the grafitti area. Changes the feel of the area to a more paper like one, but no more scratches.

Rest assured though, those of us who are not using some good screen protectors and are serious users of our SJ30s are getting those scratches on the grafitti area. Some of the scratches on mine were so bad, i could feel them with the stylus while writing.

The tape works well is and significantly cheaper althernative to a screen protector.

Another advantage to the tape trick is that it does not dull the rest of the screen!

It's the hardness of the material that matters. The plastic stylus won't scratch the screen by itself regardless of the shape. Scratches happen when harder debris gets caught between the stylus and the screen.

BTW, I recently added a strip of Scotch 811 on the graffiti area on TOP of my Brando. Looks like cr&p, but I swear my graffiti recognition is better. Also like the writing feel better. YMMV

I used the tape trick for years on my Palm IIIxe. I will point out that it didn't take very long for it to get shiny from use, and lose it's paper feel. In a week, I would be able to see a shiny oval shape in the tape where I did most of my writing. I would usually wait until it was about to wear through before changing it.

I have used screen protectors for several months now, and don't have that problem as bad. Still, they do wear out, and have to be replaced.

Does anybody have any experience with the new "wash and wear" protectors? It seems they only sell you one, and you're supposed to reuse it. Sounds goofy to me...

Nope, the actual tip itself is rounded, so though hard, it will not scratch the screen. But, the transition from the tip to the rest of the stylus is abrupt and causes a sharp edge, which might scratch the screen when being held horizontally.

If you want ugly, get a good optical loupe and look at the tip of your stylus.
The Craters of the Moon and chunks of graddhu like boulders!!
Get a screenprotector. I just peeled one off my 3 year old(?) NX to reuse on my TH until the new one comes. The NX screen looks like new.

I have found that I can tune up the tip of a stylus on an old ivory piano key. The ivory will snag the rough stuff and actually sort of polishes the tip back into round.

IMO, screen protectors are only good for the actual screen itself, not the graffiti writing area. for that, i just use a piece of 3M masking tape (only covers to 2 graffiti areas, not the silkscreen buttons). i know it looks hella ugly, but it improves my recognition, and it removes any rubbery friction between the stylus tip and screen protector.
