First of let me say that I am soooo thankful for this forum. It's the best I've found so far!
I made sure to glance at all the threads so I wouldn't ask too many questions that have all ready been asked and answered over and over again.
I just got my Nx60 sinc'd to my computer and things are going pretty well so far.
However,
I was wondering, if any of the Vets or peoples more knowledgable than me could offer any basic hints and factoids about how to get my Nx60 up and running smoothly and efficiently.
Like,..... better options for launching software, image viewing, music playing, file managing, icon management,..you know, I want to controll this baby 100% and I am looking for some good hints and secrets to get to that point as fast as possible.
Thanks for all the help in advance and I hope everyone has a great day!!!!!

Launching software - I would suspect most people prefer ZLauncher, though some others like myself prefer LauncherX. However, if I were starting from scratch, I would probably choose ZLauncher myself.
Image Viewing - AcidImage or SplashPhoto - AI had a big lead in speed, but SplashPhoto apparently narrowed the gap with their last release. I would try them both out.
Music Playing - I think most, if not all, people use the built-in AudioPlayer.
File Managing- Most NX users would probably be very happy with the built-in Clie Files. This is a "lite" version of McFile. I've been a registered McFile user for a long time, so I still use McFile for things like sorting by date.
Hints - Go get a copy of OKey from Palmgear or the Cliesource files section. If you check all the options, this does the following:
Holding down the Jog dial for about a second will highlight one of the "buttons" on the page. Scrolling the jog dial will then scroll which button is selected, and doing a jog press will then choose the selected button. Only works on apps that have buttons.
Adds Up and Down scroll arrows to the status bar. It also adds the ability to hit the battery icon to launch the app associated with your DateBook hardware button, hit the left-third of the clock area to launch the Address app, the middle-third of the clock area to launch the Todo app, or the right-third to launch the Memo app (or whatever these buttons were remapped to.
You can press the Shift button on the keyboard then release it, then hit the letter, and it will capitalize it. Without this option, you will need to hold the Shift button down while hitting the letter to capitalize.
You also may want to grab a copy of TT4NX, which replaces the default skinny fonts with much better looking fonts similar to those found on the Palm Tuengsten T.
PhotoSkin allows you to easily change the skins in your VG area. Many skins can be found in the Cliesource Skins section.
Finally, if you're a previous Palm OS user, you probably should check for the most recent updates of your old applications. Many have been updated to have support for the NX screen.
Good luck, and welcome to the world of NX.

Nice to see a another new NX60 users. I got mine Saturday. Had to fight with Best Buy on a price match from Comp USA. But I won. Just getting started. I agree with rldunn that Splashphoto is very nice. I have been a user for about a year now. Also I have SplashID for locking up key info. As far as Launchers go. I have registered Silverscreen (3.9.6) LauncherX (1.02) and now trying out Zlauncher & YiShow to see which I will keep. I like the last two for skins, and background support.
Also you will need photoskin (see palm gear) to work some skin magic.
good luck.

The best advice that I can give, backups, backups, backups! Sooner or later you will crash your shinny new Clie :)
I keep 3 rolling MS Backups on two Memory Sticks(purple is all you need), plus 3 rolling backup copies on my hard drive of the WHOLE Memory Stick. Someday, you will thank me for this advice :D Do not reley on the Palm Desktop as a backup, reason, it can easily be corrupted and contaminated from the Clie, if it develops a software problem.
OKey is nice and it's free, so is FileZ. Palmgear( www.palmgear.com (http://www.palmgear.com) ) is a good place to search for stuff, but not necessarily the best place to buy. There are so many others, it's best to browse the threads and try. Always backup before installing a new app, and it doesn't hurt to do a soft reset either.
Using ClieSource, we help you, you help us, it's a two-way street. There is some very good talent floating around. www.launchplug.com (http://www.launchplug.com/) and http://www.tankerbob.com/palm/ are two web sites maintained by some members of ClieSource to help new users, and there are many others too.
In anycase, ENJOY! ;)

I am going through and reading and taking notes right now as I type.....
Here's another question:
Say I decide to use a new launcher program...
When I install..say...."LauncherX"...what happens to the old "Launcher" program?
Does it get deleteted?...or does it just sit in the background doing nothing?.....
If the old programs don't get deleted, how does the Nx60 know which programs to use?
thanks again for all the help,
Paully_girl

The old launcher is still in ROM, which is a different storage place than RAM. RAM is the place where you install your apps. So, now you have one launcher in ROM and one in RAM. Each replacement launcher has it's own way to declare to the OS that it's now the default launcher. With LX, it's easy. After you install it, the other launcher will still be the default. You'll use the other launcher to launch LX. After you run LX, it makes itself into the default launcher, meaning that everytime you hit the Home button, it will take you back to LX. If you want to go back to the old launcher, you just go to Menu-Exit Launcher X, and now the old launcher will be the default launcher.

Paully_girl ROM is where the factory-installed apps reside, so you don't have access to ROM. However, I believe the NX has 8MB of ROM. What you can access and should be concerned about is RAM. The NX has 16MB of RAM, but only 11MB are available to the user.

I quess I am kind-of confused still about this running programs through the memory stick rather than the actual RAM on my Nx60.
Like, How to do it and how to choose how to do it...
Also, from the posts I've read, it seems as if there are many problems that can be encountered when using a memory stick.
What are somethings to look out for and to do for best performance?
I also thought I read somewhere, that the Nx series had a problem with the 128meg membory sticks? is that true, if so, what is the work around?
Either way, I'd like to keep the little RAM I have left on my Nx60 as free as possible....any hints on this as well?
Thanks for all your help, and I look forward to hearing from you,

Think of your memory stick as a hard drive that stores the programs.
The original concept of a Palm PDA was that of a simple organizer of Contacts, Appointments, To do list, and a Memo pad. Now everyone wants Desktop PC power in a handheld to do everything under the sun. The Palm operating system is still a compact simple operating system.
Not all applications are created equal, some function better than others. Some are more Memory Stick friendly than others, it all depends on the developer.
There was only one issue with the Memory Stick, that was when inserting and removing it. When you push it in all the way, hold it for just a second before releasing it from your finger pressue. The other issue involved a possible limit of a 128 MB maximum. The NR series had other issues with the Memory Stick not being recognized. Do not remove the Memory Stick while it's being written to or when it's in the connected mode with the desktop.
Yes, RAM is precious, so the less of it you use the better.
Brian Spradlin's www.launchplug.com (http://www.launchplug.com) site had some nice tutorials in launching applications.

First I want to thank all who has responded...THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!
jomoco5,
I will live that fantasy out to the fullest extent..thanks for replying!
n2ifp,
Thanks again, your info has been invaluable thus far....
in your last reply you wrote this -
"The other issue involved a possible limit of a 128 MB maximum"
My question is whether that possible limit does exist? Are 128 MB card functional for the NX60?
You also wrote "Yes, RAM is precious, so the less of it you use the better".......
That makes sense to me...what are some good ways to keep the RAM free? Or to get it back if it gets to caught up in things?
Thanks for the link as well...
rldunn,
Thanks for your post as well, I am still digesting that one and will definately have some more questions for you.
Thanks again for everyone who has helped so far and thanks to all who even thought about helping...I really want to use my NX60 to it's greatest potential....and of-course I can't wait to start helping others as well...

Yes the 128mb stick will work fine for the NX60. You only need the purple ones. Supposedly, Sony will have a software update to address the new MS Pro sticks over 128mb coming out in the near future.

I know how important RAM is..and I really want to keep my NX60 running smoothly...
What is a good way to keep the most RAM free at most times?
Also, what are some good hints on Backing up all the data on the NX60?
Thanks again and again,
Paully_girl!

but I can say that you have an app. already installed on your NX that will do backups to the MS (MSBackup). It's very easy to use. You can backup the Memory Stick using MSImport/Export which are on the Clie disk that came with the unit.
The best way to keep RAM free is to run as many programs as possible from the memory stick. The launchplug.com site explains it all very well. But, the good news for NX users is that many programs will now run from the MS without a lot of messing with them. I have been able to run all of my "extra" programs from the memory stick except DocstoGo, Ultrasoft Money, and Zlauncher. Programs like DocstoGo and Money (which have databases/files that get continually updated with each sync) are more difficult to run with the memory stick. Running most of the other programs from the MS has allowed me to keep over 7 MB (out of the 11 that is actually free) empty on my Clie. There was more before zlauncher....
I don't know how clear that was, like I said, I am still pretty new myself.
Enjoy the toy!

profvisor, with Docs2Go, you have to leave the main Docs2Go file in RAM, but you can move Sheets2Go and Word2Go to the MS to save more space, and it will run just fine.

Hi,
Speaking of memory sticks, what purpose does the white magic gateway MS have? Are there any difference between that and the regular purple ones?

Well, the white Magic Gate sticks cost more! They are only needed if you intend to use copy protection while using Sony's proprietary ATRAC3 music format, in which most don't use. Most use the MP3 music format and the purple Memory Sticks.

Hmmmm, getting in on the MS issue, I had thought that you could insert a MS the size of 1 GB, with the proper drivers. Assuming there are various sizes in between the 128 MB and the 1 GB, does the NX have a limit?
On the subject of RAM, is there ANY way to get rid of these extraneous programs already loaded. The program, Clie Remote, used to be optional, now I can't remove it.

I would suspect the NX won't have a limit. Sony has already said they will release patches so that the NX can utilize the new MS Pro stick, and I believe these sticks only come in sizes of at least 256MB.
As for ClieRemote, when you say it used to be optional, I'm assuming you're talking about on another Clie device. On older Clies, you had to load ClieRemote from your CD and it took up RAM. With the NX, it was pre-loaded in ROM, so it's not taking up any of your 11MB. That said, Brayder is working on an update to Jacksprat that will allow users to delete ROM files and use Jackflash to utilize that space, so there may be a way to get more than 11MB of internal space soon.

I tried MS Backup last night for the first time and did a restore. It worked flawlessly. I could never get Backup Buddy to restore at all, always issues.
One question though. I loaded a new SB, but want to remove it. is hard reset the only option? Can it be removed another way? I haven't tried PhotoSkin yet. I have Yishow, but the folders on MS are missing?
Thanks.

Cool! I get wait to start deleting! What exacly IS taking up the RAM? Alot of the included programs are integrated with each other (can't touch those :( ) So what did Sony spend 4 MB on?

I am interested in getting Pocketmirror Pro and was wondering..does that program have to get installed on my NX60 or can it go on the MS?
Thanks for any and all the help

Question-when I do a backup to the memory stick, and then do another one, does the second one overwrite the first, or do I keep creating new backup folders and using ms memory unecessarily?
