is it possible that any (ppc) CF GPS would work on sony?

Currently I would say no as I haven't heard anything to the contrary. I am sure it would work, but it's the same old Sony story, no drivers.

It should be possible though, from my experience with the Handera 330 most of the CF GPS cards use a common serial port emmulation standard (the same one used by some modems and serial port CF cards) and don't need a specific driver at all.

Definately a featured I'd love to see added to the added to the driver, or released as a separate driver.
