I believe i read a while back about some guy who was able to control what mp3's played over his PC using his clie hooked up to a wireless network. I assumed using some sort of VPN client, but i couldn't find the post on it. I really don't know what all VPN entails so i might actually be wanting something else. Can anyone help?

If I'm not mistaken he was using Win-Hand Free.

thanks that prog looks cool, but seeing as i don't have the wifi card yet... can anyone tell me if it is possible to use your clie as a remote for your mp3's from your PC via WIFI? And have you done it before.

Hi Tek,

There is software out there to do this, you can use GiantDisc:

http://www.giantdisc.com/index.php

This looks great, and uses TCP/IP so you can transmit over BT, WLAN etc. It's Linux only though I'm afraid - last time I looked it was a bit of a mission to set up and I didn't quite have the patience (or skill)...

There is also another piece of software called PalmAMP which allows you to remotely control WinAMP over a serial cable. It looks like it's no longer availalbe from the developer:

http://www.ironcreek.net/

But if you do a search I'm sure you can pick it up from somewhere - TuCows have it for example.

I tried this a couple of years ago on my Palm IIIxe, and though it worked to some extent I did get frequent crashes. It would be very cool for someone to update this software to work across TCP/IP (you listening Ayasin?! :) ).

PalmAMP is no longer available.

I know... I did mention that. But it is still kicking about if you try google.

An alternative I just found (but have never tried) is MMC:

I got bored and tried MMC - it's actually pretty good!

With some playing around I can now remotely control playing songs in WinAMP over Bluetooth... Pretty cool for anyone who has all their MP3s on a PC but doesn't want to keep going back and forth to it to skip tracks.

I'm quite impressed, especially as the guy says in his documentation that he didn't think Bluetooth worked. It's by no means perfect - you seem to have to manually re-establish a connection each time you start it up etc. but it's not bad.

so, w/ this MMC prog i can theoretically control winamp w/ my palm over WIFI via an ad hoc connection?

Hmm, no you won't be able to use it over WiFi - it's serial only, so you have the choice of:

Standard Serial Port
Infra-Red
RF (Bluetooth Serial Port)

The only one of those programs I mention above that you'll be able to use over WiFi is GiantDisc.

This seems like a solution in search of a problem to me. Of course, there are several new, dedicated remote control devices for PCs out lately. I picked up the one I liked best, the Keyspan Digital Media Remote, which can function like a general mouse and has dedicated buttons that know how to control certain apps like Windows Media Player and doubtless many other programs of that ilk (see the link). It's a very small remote that communicates with a USB IR receiver. (The size of the remote is an issue if you are trying to use a Clie.) I use it to start and stop music for dance classes without having to rush across the room to muck with the CD player.

Check the Keyspan website here (http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/remote/)

Ok, so i guess i can't do what i wanted to do... This is what i was goin for:

I'm makin an mp3 pc for my car (makin a small box to put a bare bones p120 pc in to only play mp3's). I wanted to then control the mp3 playing w/ my clie and i just assumed that there was an application for this via wifi. My clie wont have line of sight to the PC (it will either be under the seat or in the trunk), so it looks like i'm stuck for now.
I did email the makers winhand, and they said their program could do this, but i'm a little skeptical if it really will ad-hoc or not... ah well.

thanks all!

How about controlling your entire PC using WiFi. Check out a program called PalmVNC. It's a remote control software like PC Anywhere, compatable with all versions of Windows and Palm Os including 5.0 and it's freeware. It only takes up 47 kb of RAM. Search for it on Google and you will find it.

I have tried it but finding that the response is pretty slow with all of these types of progs. I am running my PC at 1400 x 1050 resolution and it bacame unusable.
