Just about every file I attempt to convert returns, "Unsupported format" messages.

I finally tracked down Killer Bean 2 thanks to another thread, and it's all nicely converted into Mpg2 format but IC won't touch it.

Do I hafta shell out for Kinoma? Noone seems really pleased with that.

He'p me, please!

From what I can tell, most .MPG files will convert no problem. Plain ol' .AVI files will work, but most files with a .AVI extension are using some form of compression. Almost any file that has compressed sound will not have sound after conversion. Divx 4 doesn't seem to work, while Divx 5 does. The sound will need to be converted though. I haven't tried any other types as all my video is compressed using Divx.
For Quicktime movies (.MOV), most seem to work fine. Agian, the sound can be an issue with some files though.

Arg. Helpful and thank you for responding, but.

But. Everyone's always got a But...

when I drag and drop, "Unsupported format." When I open and try to ADD files, "Unsupported format." Mebbeeeeee Image Converter just stinks?

No MPEG2. You need MPEG1, or an AVI without compressed sound. Here's my advice: Go to http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net , download VirtualDub extract and start it. Drag your AVI file on it. Set Video to Direct Stream Copy and Audio to Full Processing Mode, Conversion Sampling Rate 44100 High Quality, 16-bit, Stereo if you want to do a HighQuality Video or 24000 HQ, 16-bit Stereo for normal Quality or 11025 HQ, 16-bit, Mono for LP Quality.

Choose File/Save as Avi and wait for it to convert the sound (It's much faster then converting the video as well. Check if the filesize is under 1GB. Drag the whole thing onto Image Converter and it sgould work just fine

I just drop everything into tmpgenc and convert to mpeg1. Its a quick and dirty method, but it works. Anything that tmpgenc can't convert, I use virtualdub.

PS: If you ever run across some .wmv files that give virtual dub an error, grab virtual dub 1.3c, it can usually handle those files.

I have yet to find a file it wont convert. The KEY is that you may have to uncompress the sound first. For .mov you can use QT Pro for ANY avi you can use VirtualDub (leave the video stream alone) and for MPEGs you can use tmpgenc. I DO NOT recommend converting the video or making everything MPEG1 before dumping it to IC. I have converted divx, .mov, mpeg, raw DV...all with NO recompression of the video, just uncompressing the audio. I have not tried mpeg2, it is likely it may need to be converted to MPEG1 first.

I might have found a type of avi that doesnt work.

It's an anime, avi of course, works fine on my computer, but when i try to open it up with VirtualDub it gives me this error msg...

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'DX50' (unknown)

VirtualDub requires a video for windows (vfw) compatiable codec to decompress video. DirectShow codes, such as those used by windows media player, are not suitable."

any ideas?

btw this is my first post...HI!!

DX50 is the FOURCC for Divx 5.02 . Get it from http://www.divx.com

There are two systems for playing video on Windows. One is VfW (Video for Windows) and DS (DirectShow). Most players use DS, while most editing programs use VfW. A typical codex consists of both: A VfW and A DS version.

You probably have a corrupt installation or maybe just Divx 5.00 instead of 5.02

Alas, my quick & dirty method fails about 5% of the time. With fascinating results.

It's not the 'dirty' part that I find strange about your system, rob. It's just that reencoding the whole movie (VS just decoding the sound) is pretty slow and especially TMPEGEnc is known for low speed and high quality. It's certainly not 'quick'!

Its just a catch phrse. The "quick" actually refers to the amount of thinking that needs to be done, which means to say, almost none.

Thanks for the suggestions, I shall try them and come weeping back if I still fail.

hans,

I tried your instructions on the virtual dub above without processing the video, and converted a file that I had downloaded. I then put it over to IC and still got the error that the file type was not supported.

The file that I had am trying to convert has this as the file info:(smf).workprint.divx.(2of2).avi (you probably do not want to know the whole file name!!) any hints as to what could be the problem? I tried direct stream the video, and convert the audio to 22 stereo.
