Yes I think a sense of humor is required.

There is a game called Life As A Black Man which was created by a man in Oakland. It's definitely interesting to play...allows others to experience some of the frustrations, obstacles, etc that are faced by Black men.

Are there stereotypes? Of course...stereotypes generally have some basis in fact, statistics or truth. Just because there are exceptions doesn't mean the rule doesn't exist.

from dictionary.com:
ster·e·o·type ( P ) Pronunciation Key (str--tp, stîr-)
n.
A conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image.
One that is regarded as embodying or conforming to a set image or type.

I don't want u to think that Ghettopoly only stereotypes African American. Being an Asian American, I certainly heard all the stereotypes. The game consist of properties such as Hell's Kitchen<--Irish. Ling Ling's Massage Parlour and Creme of Sun Youn Gai <---Asian. Hernando's Chop Shop <--Latino. Weinstein Gold and Platium. <---Jewish. Trailor Park Court <---White. Etc¡K I can't exactly put an Asian guy in the middle of the board, it is Ghettopoly. You just have to wait for Orientalopoly. So if you think it's only about one group of people, your wrong. Take it for what it is. It's only a game. Life is too short. Sometimes you just have to laugh about it.

lame game... please waste your time and make a port for palm os. no one will buy it. only a complete idiot could NOT think that this game is completely racist. it's one thing to be aware of stereotypes and their *element* of truth. it takes a far different breed to perpetuate those stereotypes.

I checked the IP address on this post and it definitely does not match the one that jomoco5 uses around the board (yes I checked a number of his posts.)

FWIW - the host name doesn't match any other posters on this thread either.

Looks like trolls are on the loose. If you don't feed them, they will go away. ;)

I think I just might have to pick this one up. Like all things controversial, it'll probably be taken off the market quickly & then become a collector's item. I picked up the Subway Vigilante game when Bernie Getz was still in the news, as well as Ice-T's Body Count album (with the cop killer song). Or maybe I'm just twisted... :)

Hey, it's just a game...if you can't laugh at yourself or find the humor in parodies, that's your issue. A board game called Ghettopoly isn't going to change any grown person's opinions about any group.

People believe whatever they believe...often the truth doesnt' stand in their way!

David, when you created the game (heard you on NPR by the way -- clearly they didn't like you), what was your market target.

Were you kinda hoping to capture the "racist" market, I realize there are a million of them in the united states, and I also realize many of them still buy lawn jockeys and aunt jamama (sp) type sugar bowls, but some how I just don't see many of them rushing to stores for gettopoly.

Or, were you counting on the getto thug, and thugetts (???sounds as good as gettopoly???) to see the "humor" and say, "oh yeah, instead of a few 40s or some blow, I'mma get dis game for my baby mama?" Did you think they would see it as a family game, a must have for every "getto" family?

Or. were you stickly counting on the discrectionary dollars of some mindless, sensitivity challenged, .... to buy that very well produced game.

While I'm at it, I noticed you have a very well laid out, colorful and attractive website, and I also notice that you have unique player pieces, when the caluclator in my mind got to crunching numbers, I said either this guy has an uncle in the game board business or he has a lot of money invested in this game (perhaps both).

What gives, what is your actual profit motive (holding asside any racial issues if any)?

i have no clue what you people are fighting over. I live in the Bricks and for you people not from around my area thats the heart of Newark NJ , where i walk out my door and see these things everyday. until the whole big thing about this game i never heard of it and neither did anyone else i knew . now that everyone has made a big deal out of nothen but the truth in a funny matter made for MATURE human beings, every kid in america has prob heard bout it now n will go out n get it. I am not offended by this game at all nore should anyone else. in fact i ordered 2 one to play and one to hang up on my wall next to the pic of my boi hiting my bong. GROW UP PEOPLE

Well as the payoff and profit is in the form of money I would think money would be the "profit motive", I could be wrong, but I think that is what the game is exchanged for on the open markets.

And I would still like a Palm OS version.

I'm not interested in Ghettopoly for the Palm because of the following:

1. I don't like Monopoly
2. I don't like games that seem to rely on a gimmick (ie: Cashing in on stereotypes, current events, or even movie licensees)
3. I don't like games that are simply remade versions of other games (ie: Tetris clones, Bejeweled clones, Monopoly clones)

I'm sure other people might want to see a version, but I have no interested. Just offering an honest opinion that really has nothing to do with racism etc...

Honestly, was the point of this poll to actually find out if people are interested in a port of the game, OR (more likely) was it to maintain the amount of controversy this game needs to sell? Target audience for this game? Anyone looking for a gimmick of the week.

Here is the general gist of how to make this go away if you don't like it: IGNORE IT. If it offends you, don't comment on it. As I stated before, the only way this game will sell is if people make a big deal out of it and draw attention to it. Screaming and yelling about it is only free advertising. I personally have never seen the game, so I am not going to weigh in on my opinion. But, as soon as I saw the topic, I had to read the thread fully knowing it was going to be a full out flame war among people who normally get along very well.
