I, personally, think that the only apps that should focus on hi-res support are games, but that is just my opinion.

Glad it's only your opinion and not the opinion of many developers.

Why? Graf Anywhere renders the Graffity Area pretty much useless and especially applications which don't require drag-and-drop benefit as they can have ga enabled all the time

I don't know if A5 did this before, but now you can copy & paste appointments - something I've been missing since my EPOC/Psion days.

Sebring, when you said the HandyShopper hires icon set, are you referring to the high color version?  Because if you see the HandyShopper icon set with Icon Manager, each icon comes in two types, low color and high color.  The A5 v.0.1e7 that I installed is still picking up the low color of HandyShopper icons, not the high color ones.  So it is basically still doing the same way as the previous version 0.1e6 in my Clie. :(

Ya Hoo! I has gotten a TungstenT not too long ago and have been hoping that A5 would move on up into a better OS5 interface.

I have not found a single datebook enhancement that has anything near the power of A5's weekview. I would be willing to pay the bucks for other apps if they were better, but I have found that they actually are lacking in weekview features in comparison to A5. I can't believe that this app is continuing to be developed for free. I'm his biggest fan.

1. Does A5 show meeting times in the week view?

2. How stable is the current A5 release? -- I'm reluctant to install beta software on my current Palm.

Apparently only the hi color ones. The only ones that show in the available icons are those that come with Handyshopper, but they are still much better than the ones that come with A5. Because the icons were so ugly, I hadn't been using icons, so I wasn't aware the previous version could use these icons as well. Sorry for the false hope.:)

Update. The reason the HS icons looked hires, is because I have v3bhack installed on my NR. Makes them look much better, in the icon selection screen. A5 doesn't show the third party HS icons I have in the same icon set.

1. Yes it does show the time as an option.

2. Seems rock solid stable on my NR. Haven't incurred any stability issues since a very early beta version many, many months ago, even then, just a soft reset.

Sebring, thanks for your reply. I tried leaving only the high color icons by deleting the low color ones from my icon set, but it ended up A5 was not seeing the icons.

These (http://www.cliesource.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=512&papass=&sort=1&thecat=500) are my hig color icon set and those (http://www.cliesource.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=513&papass=&sort=1&thecat=500) are the low color version that A5 picked.

These hires icons are just too cool :D. I played around with Icon Manager and made some new icons for the new A5 hires icon set. Now I enjoy seeing those icons alot more as I use A5 everyday. Here are a couple screenshots of A5 with hires icons:

Thanks for the compliment. I enjoy making my own icons with Icon Manager, if none available. However, most of them are from either the following freewares or demo samples:
HandyShopper
FM Hires Icons (public)
Rock's Collection of DateBk5 icons
DP Design Final Demo

I converted some of lowres icons to hires ones or modified them with Icon Manager. I think the Icon Manager and HandyShopper manuals provide the links to some of them.

If you haven't seen the FM Hires Icons 1.2 (http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodID=49724) (freeware), check it out.  It has really cool icons.

I've gotta say, this program is awesome, all it really needs is built-in editing, it only goes to the built in datebook to edit. Would this be that hard? Also, the built-in datebook doesn't do category (I don't think so), I had to download a trial of another datebook to edit my categories, then I deleted that datebook. Anyways, editing (built in and not going to date book) would be great for this, it seems like that's all it needs.

Go to your menu in A5>Options>System
Under "Actions" you will see four options

Time/Priority (That means the entry area to the far left of each event.)
Description (That means the text descript area of each event)
Info top left (The upper left corner of the info pop up of each event)
Info top right (The upper right corner of the info pop up of each event)

To the Right of each action there is a drop down menu with options for each action.

delete (will delete the event if you tap the associated action area)
edit (will open up the edit screen for the event, where you can edit catagory, description, icon, time, repeat, etc.)
jump (will take you to the built in datebook on the date and time of the event whose action you tapped)
info (will open the info dialogue wich shows the full text of description, the catagory, times, date etc.)
info + note (will open the info dialogue with the note if one applies)

I hope this helps.  This app is awesome!  Browse through the menu options, you'll be amazed at how configurable this app is and how many useful options it has.  Like I mentioned earlier this guy has outdone the week view of any other app I have seen including Agendus, DtBk5 and so on.

Thanks! Now I have the icon pulling up the edit dialog and the description pulling up the description. Best datebook replacement for me, I don't need to see month view, year view, or day view. I don't need to see what I'm doing every hour of the day, week view lets me see all of that without the extra hours. This is the perfect one for me, and it's freeware, just how I like em!

If you assign A5 to a hard button, say 'ToDo' button, you can toggle between List (day) view and Grid (week) view by pushing the button. In a busy day, the List view is useful since it can display the whole today list in full screen. However, you can scroll the whole tasks & events with Jog Dial too (set by going to 'Menu', 'Option', 'Grid', and highlight 'Items' under the 'Jog Dial:')

It actually toggles between List and Grid view by pressing the Jog Dial. Doesn't have to be assigned to a button. I do use the hack to substitute A5 for the week view of the default datebook app. This app is getting right up there with Handyshopper as my favorite freeware app, maybe my favorite app period. I keep my icons on MS in my MSMount directory, so they don't use RAM. Have to remember to move them back to RAM to edit them with Icon Manager or you'll get a soft reset crash.:D

I agree with Noodles, the FM Hires Icons is a great set of freeware icons.:)

What hack is that? Will it work with OS5?

DanT

If you press the Palm OS DateBook button, the app will tab through today, week, and month views. By enabling the hacks, A5WeekHack will launch A5 whenever you toggle the Datebook button to weekview. A5AgendaHack will launch A5 whenever you toggle the Datebook button to agendaview.

I don't know if OS5 is compatible with the hacks. However, the hacks may not be useful to you if you assign the the Datebook or ToDo button to A5 anyway. Since now I have replaced both ToDo and DateBook with A5, the buttons were then available for launching other apps. I ended up assigning the Datebook button to 1Year and the ToDo button to A5.

I wouldn't worry about the hacks, if I were you. It's just another way of launching A5.

My wish for the next version A5 is to have the List view utilizing the whole line instead of indenting to 5/8" away from the left edge of the screen, so we can fully utilize the screen real-estate by putting more words into the Event or Task description.

Good point.  I still couldn't figure that out.  That happens to mine too with v3bhack disabled.  If v3bhack is enabled and I change the font from normal to small or tiny, the icons disappear.  Hopefully the next version can keep the icon size intact regardless of the font.

Actually I like both A5's week view and agenda view better than DateBk5, but I'm only demoing DateBk5 and may not be making the most of it. I can't get hires icons to work in DateBk5, even with v3bhack.

Does anyone use both DateBk5 and A5? If so, what is the avantage in using both? I need to watch every byte of RAM on my T415, and really only load "necessary" apps like the KC Royals season schedule. ;)

sebring
06-26-2003, 10:23 PM
I have both on my NR. If space is a problem, I wouldn't use both. A5 uses about 175kb and DateBk5 uses about 659k. I've only had DateBk5 on my Clie for a couple of weeks and haven't really dug into it yet (good thing they have a 45 day trial). I like the week view and agenda view of A5 better, so far, but DateBk5 has a great year view and the latest preview uses hires icons without the v3bhack required for icons to be hires in A5. There are a large number of people on this site that list DateBk5 as their must have app, but I may not really need all of its power, in my circumstances ( I've already gotten everybody use to me being late for everything).

DanT
06-28-2003, 04:52 PM
Sebring, how does DateBK5 year view compare with 1Year (http://www.cliesource.com/sdownload/fileinfo.php?id=3369)?

sebring
06-28-2003, 06:18 PM
The datebk5 year view is full screen on my NR (very nice) and it indicates all dates with events and just tapping the date take you to that date. One Year is nice, but, except for the current month, it isn't linked to the Palm datebook and it is limited to 320x320. Also the combination of 1Year and A5 is $25 cheaper than datebk5. Have about 30 days left on my Datebk5 demo, but since my scheduling needs aren't that demanding, I probably won't buy it, unless I score another one of those $50 free software coupons from Lexus. In summary, the DateBk5 year view is much better integrated with all the other datebook functions and much larger on my NR and easier on my bad eyes.

PS: I like the new hires app icon that comes with DateBk5 and I've ripped it off for use with A5 using AppIcon. Don't tell anybdy.:D :D

Not mine. My icon set (103 icons so far) has pretty small footprint anyway (30KB). However, I keep my icon set backup and other icon collection in MS for future use.

You may try to put A5 and its icon set in MS with PowerRUN or PiDirectII or MSMount, if you are really really tight in RAM space. From what I heard though, the alarms may not work if you do that.

Hopefully the next version will. The icons are commonly used by other apps (DateBK5, Agendus, etc.) so there would be unlikely they will cause conflict. At least I haven't heard any.

Another wish list for the next version is the ability to choose alarm sounds so I can distinguish between various events by hearing. Sometime events come close to each other and I would like to pay more attention on the important ones.

DB5 allows you to do that very thing. Plus, you didn't mention that DB5 integrates with your address book, to do lists, and memopad. It is by far the most powerful Palm app that I own.

I keep my icons on MS using MSMount, without any problems. You do need to move them back to RAM if you want to edit them or add to them or delete them, or you may get a soft reset crash.

This only works for OS4 devices. My icon file is about 100kb, I haven't finished cleaning it out yet.

I believe Tanker_Bob puts his icon set on MS in the same ZLauncher/apps subdirectory as the app that uses them, and that works for him. That would seem to require a separate icon set for each app that uses icons. In MSMount, all my icons are available for any app that uses them, like Handyshopper, A5 and DateBk5.

For those of you who downloaded A5 version 0.1e7(7) right after this thread was posted by Noodles Hovar, A5 has gone through two minor revisions since, as noted below:

0.1e7(8) 17 June
fixed:
-bug on selecting icon set (crash on some devices, not type related)

Update on my previous assessment of 1Year vs DateBk5.

Now that 1Year is $7 shareware, DateBk5 looks MUCH more attractive, particularly for users of hires+ Clies. For $18 more dollars, you get a significant amount of additional power and integration than the combination of 1Year and A5. That being said, I don't personally need the power of DateBk5 right now, so I will probably remain content with the standard datebook app and A5 and hope for another freeware year view option.

I'm still happy with the freeware version of 1Year v.1.2 since all I need there is just the calendar.  It is nice to be able to see the whole calendar year in one screen.  I don't need any links from the calendar to daily activities since A5 takes care of that nicely.

In A5, if I want to go to any date in this year or next year, all I need to do is to tap and hold on the week # (on top right corner of the screen) which will bring the 'Go To' calendar screen, then just select the year, month, and week, to see what activities I had or going to have for that week.

I guess I miss-understood your question. The steps that I mentioned above will change the font color of each events or tasks, not the background. You're right about the background color can only be set for the entire day.

For me the list order and font color are sufficient enough to get my attention.  For example, if a task or event is priority 1 for that day, the letters will be shown in red and will be posted on the top of the list.

Once again thanks for the help. The one thing I'm not crazy about is setting the text color, appends text to my original entry in the default Palm calendar (setting priority 2 appends :20). But hey it's free.

No problemo.

Using icons will add :xx:yy string too at the end of the task or event. But that does not bother me since I don't use the Datebook & ToDo List any more.

Everybody has his/her own preferences. In my case, A5 allows me to free up the two hard buttons which I use them for launching A5 and 1Year.
