They are little applets that run, usually using a hack master program. Most of them don't work in OS5, although now there are some stand a lone apps like Okey, McPhling, Energy Dimmer, etc. They all can be found on PalmGear.

They are also called extensions, and allow capabilities that were not included in the os, i.e. pop up calc, clock on all apps, font changes, etc.

Speaking of hacks, what hacks hack-like programs work on OS 5?
I just upgraded from a 760c and I'm bummed if I have to lose all my hacks.
Thanks

Hacks was the original term for "application extentions" or a resident program that intercepted calls to the Palm and modified the call. For example, middlecaps hack would intercept the graffiti input and modify it so if it crosses a certain line - it would convert it into uppercase.
As the OS matured in OS3.5 and OS4, the term "hack" sounded too crude, so they renamed it "event manager" (which is a hack ... by another name!).
Now ... what hacks work in OS5?
There are a few programs which are OS5 compliant hacks - such as McPhling. But on the whole, the hacks have been re-written for OS5 as proper "event managers" which are more stable than the way hacks are handled (one example is Uninstall Manager).
The next question is " What software can support hacks?"
Answer - only TealMaster from www.tealpoint.com.
Other hack managers such as X-Master, YAHM and so on are compliant for OS4 and older.
Hope this helps!
