View Full Version : Memory Stick Pro--Truth in Adverstising

Well, I recently purchased a 256mb Memory Stick Pro-- the prices finally came down enough to justify the purchase, in my mind. Up until now, I have been getting by with the ol' standard blue 128mb Memory Stick.
My main reason for purchasing was the added space for the large video files which I seem to be downloading a lot of recently. The 128mb X 2 sticks simply don't work b/c what you really have is 2 128 mb sticks with the over-rated (in my opinion) convenience of having them in one package and being able to "organize" your files (as if the file management systems don't allow you to do that already). If you have a video over, say 120mb, you are out of luck.
So, I am happy to report that the Pro stick has been excellent and really delivers. It also appears much faster. But not always trusting advertised features...I decided to conduct an informal test. I backed up the entire Contents of my NX70V onto both my old 128mb stick and the new Pro one. Results?
Backing up 9874kb of data took 1 minute 43 seconds using the Pro stick, and 2 min 28 seconds using the old stick. That is a significant improvement, and mind you, reflects a write speed. My understanding is that the read speed is even more of an improvement.
all around...money well spent.

Actually my purple 128MB MS is slightly faster than the 256MB MS Pro :(

There is more megabytes wasted also with a 256MB stick vs a 128MB stick. The MS Pro is more convenient, although you have to load the driver back on first before a restore.

It's you man...your MS Import is faster as we found out last time.... ;)

Just kidding, all in good fun...I am holding out for the 1gb stick to hover in the $250 range...although I think I will be waiting a while.

My 512MB came on Wednesday. It feels good to have 512MB + 1G CF card together to keep me occupied whenever I ride on the train. Although I paid $230ish I believe it was a good investment.

That is interesting....what could account for it? All the tecnical data point to a faster Pro stick. Are they both Sony?

I paid $120 for SanDisk 256MS Pro (off the shelf). Not exactly the greatest bargain but I couldn't handle the wait.

One things that sets me back when using the MS Pro is the fact that I can't do a full backup recovery whenever my NX dies on me. I was thicking about formatting it the same as regular MS, (not that I haven't done this before), this was done to bypass the MS Pro Patch before it was released, & worked like a charm off my NX. Still thinking...I can compromise a bit of speed & for efficiency. I'll just have one big 256MB Memory Stick! :D

The good thing about this is I can always re-format it with my Clie to get it back to the Pro spec (FAT32)
