View Full Version : Known defects on the NX series

After owning several Palm Tungsten Ts, I'm of the opinion that that device is suffering from vast amount of defects. Tilted screen, dust under the screen glass, scratches, defect digitizer, defect backlight, uneven backlight, dead pixels etc.

Of course, this makes me quite worried when a new handheld shopping spree is approaching. Based on that, I wonder if there are any known defects of the NX series or CLIEs in general.

I never had your problems on my NX. You could have returned it for exchange.

You can always find hardware problems in mass produced products. Now, I went thru 4 palm 515's before I got my Clie 615C. Beautiful. Most all the people I work with have Clie's of different models. One guy still has a 505 and never uses it. There have been no hardware problems with anyone's Clie, and we're talking cops and Flight Paramedics! We're kinda ruff on stuff!!

Cheers,
Steve H.

Occassionally people have had "dead" pixels or pixels that are "stuck" on one color.

Also, the hold button on some units have been very loose and caused problems with operating the Clie.

Other then those, I haven't heard of much:) I love mine:)

Dead pixels can be found on any LCD device, be it PDA's or computer monitors. The other issues sounds like poor quality.

Yes, Palm is addressing the problems with the Tungsten | T by releasing their improved Tungsten | T2. It will have the screen of the Zire 71 along with other improvements.

As for NX series defects, each time I've tried one I've had to do three exchanges before I got one without any dead pixels on the screen. There have been few reports of dead pixels on other models, but they are out there. I think for some odd reason the 320*480 screens have bigger problems with dead pixels.

The screen of the Palm 71 is sooo nice. I hope Sony upgrades theirs. I put an SJ30 to the Palm 71 and there was no comparison.

Now you got me worried. Since Sony doesn't market any of its handhelds in Sweden, so an exchange would be terribly difficult, and very expensive because of the shipping.

Because it has 51,200 more chances to get a dead pixel.
;-)

By the way I am very happy with my NX. No defect found so far, but I wish the memorystick isn't so easy to fall out.

Get it from www.expansys.com. They are in UK and ships to Sweden.

And if you get a faulty device ( dead pixels ) I am sure they will cover the return charges.

I have noticed in my "new" (bought on ebay) NX60, that the upper left hand corner (in clamshell mode, lower right hand corner tablet) has a little bit of a green tint. It doesn't bother me, but I wonder why that is.

Ooops, we have forgotten the problem with dust under the screen on N series models, all the troubles with faulty memory stick slot on NR70/NR70V, no ROM updates for all but one Clie model, no APIs available to developers for years, Sony always beeng an a$$ to their customers, etc, etc. Other then that, Sony is the best :D

I have a slightly red tint on my screen in that corner. Only notice it when the screen is all white like when reading documents in iSilo, but then it's always in tablet mode, so the status bar blocks most of it.

If you divide the screen into 9 equal parts, mine takes up about 1/9th of the screen.

One other point is a hardware design issue:

The CF slot cannot be retracted with a card installed. If you want to use BOTH MS and CF for memory expansion, you'll be forced to remove the CF card before putting the NX73/80 in a case or pocket. How CONVENIENT!!!

Only the Memory Stick can be left in the device...

I wouldn't be happy with that, and it could get worse. Sounds like the screen got partially damaged somehow.

We have about 12 various Clies (4 are NX models one an NR and one an NZ90) in our office and only one has a dead pixel! We haven't had to return a single one and they get used a lot for development and quality assurance testing of our software. We've been very happy them.

I do not get this so may be worth chasing up to get a replacement unit

My NX60 has a few dead pixels, but I'd never notice them without running one of the programs designed to test for it.

My issues, other than those mentioned already, are twofold.

First, the screen swivel has developed some nasty slop in it, and I can't find the 5-pointed screwdriver needed to tighten it up. My NX60 was fine for about 6 months before developing the slop.

Second, more recently, my battery life dropped dramatically. No new software installed, but I've gone from charging once a week whether I needed it or not to having to recharge at least every other day.

I've also noticed that Ram and Card space seem to disappear by themselves (well not really). I backup to the memorystick everyday using MS Backup. I keep three days worth of backups (deleting the third oldest backup before making the new one) and I have noticed that everyday, I loose a meg of memory card space. The backup that I make and delete can be the same size, but the card will say that it has one less meg then it did before the backup. Also, what is up with Sony's updates taking up so much room. I bought the Game controller last night (7.99 at best buy :)) and I installed the drivers and games, then moved the games to the card and the drivers seem to take up about 800k???

Eric, I believe the five sided screwdriver is what's known as a torx screw. They come in various different sizes, but all have the same number of 'sides'. A local hardware store shoule be able to help.

Torx screw drivers have six points...

My game controller only takes up 60K.

BTW, I have noticed the battery life shortening, either that or I am using it even more than I did before. I have to charge twice a day most days now:(

Lost space:
I ran a standard Windows check disk (by right-clicking on it when it was attached as a removeable drive). It found 5 MB of trash on the card. I have an older digital camera that uses compact flash media, and over the course of a few years, it built up over 25 MB of trash. If you copy and delete a lot of files onto your Memory Stick, it's possible that you'll end up with corrupt sectors on the card, just like a hard drive.

Hmmm... My NX60 has been really funny ever since I got it. Mine crashes all of the time (1-2 times/day). I previously had a Palm V, which almost never crashed.
I seem to get errors like:
HighDensityDisplayMgr.c Line 274 BmpGetDensity invalid argument

Also Hotsync crashes every other time I use it. I hotsync fine one time, and then when I hit the hot sync button again for the next sync, it crashes with a Fatal Exception or MemoryMgr.c Line 3583 Free Handle. Only resolution is to poke the reset button. I have a supply of bent paper clips on my desk so I can keep synched.

I tried backing up, hard resetting, and restoring but that didnt resolve the issue. Dont know if this is a software issue, or if it is a HW issue.

HELP!!

I have a NX-80 and it has no problems, but it is kid of big. ( I had an NR, there a lot smaller, and a pixel was burned. The old one broke and my warranty gave me a new one. :) ) Clie's Rule.

I have a NX-80 and it has no problems, except I get errors a few errors:
- Every now and then, it crashes with something like MemoryMgr.c Line 3684 and I press the rest button on the dialog box and sometimes I lose some of my data.

- When I play Master Thief it works great and all but after I move about two feet or so I dialog box comes up and says "An error occurred in the application you are using. Note the error code and contact the developer of the application. (Sys 0505) (0, 1122)" but I just click OK and it takes me back home. This also happens in Sonic.

I had an NR, they where a lot smaller, and a pixel was burned. It broke and my warranty gave me a new one. :) But I din't have that many errors. But thats everything else works.

I've only recieved 2 errors on my NX80 and they were from installing games...just standard fatal exceptions and then I soft reset and they were fine.

I've had an NX80 for about a week and the hardware has been perfect. Installing some crappy games have forced me to reboot, but I can't blame Sony for that.

Your kidding right ?

A Palm device that has a better screen then a Sony one?
