View Full Version : The Movie Question again

I know we've discussed this before, but I was wondering if anyone has had better success with playing movies from the CF card since the release of 1.1.2?

Movies taken with my Clie will now play from the CF and I have one short clip that works in standard quality.  All the other movies that I try to play from the CF (converted with image converter to long play, standard or high quality) will not play.

Is this what everyone else is running into?

Thanks for your input!!

well, what is the size of your CF card? I'm using CF Ver1.1.2 now, video plays fine, just as long as I don't tamper with the ClieFiles otherwise that would corrupt my SanDisk 256MB CF. I'm using McFile in-replacement. :)

regarding to movie size
you'd want to take a look at the movie file size as well, since I find that files under 1MB wouldn't playback off my 256MB CF card. unless those that're over 1M tends to run fine, mostly HighQuality and a little bit of Standard.

I dont know about recording but I'm having various results with playing movies that have gone though image converter. I tried about 10 different movies, all but one about an hour long most in long mode some in standard.

-20%? will play fine (to use movie controls need to stop/pause the clip)
-15%? will play fine, but can't be stopped/paused
-10%? will show only some frames (1/300?)- timeline jumps to end on every frame shown - can't be stopped
-rest will not play at all - freezing Clie

Unfortunately I don't see any relation as to what/why/when yet.

No difference noted for Transcend 30x 512MB and Sandisk 256MB

Eagerly awaiting improved driver (don't think it's movie and/or card related) and/or workarounds,

Erik

BTW, I'm using a 1GB Sandisk CF. The one std quality movie that plays is a short clip (Smartbeep commercial) under 1MB. Most others are Long Play under 1MB with one other that is Standard and 2MB (These are the animatrix clips ran through Vdub and Image converter).

It would be great if someone with lots more multimedia knowledge than I have could try to pin down the frame rates, sampling rates, and whatever else the Clie likes to have in video/audio for movie clips.

I have a few long movies converted and running on my NX70 in standard mode. I found that breaking up the long movies into 35-40meg chunks works much better that one long file. I've emailed EruWare about it, they're looking into it. I currently have Nemesis on my 256 Sandisk card. I converted the movie from DVD and broke it up by having DVDx take 4 chapters at a time to create the file before IC got ahold of it.

I've now converted about 10 DVDs. I have 4 256M CF cards from Viking, SanDisk, and Kingston (2), and 5 128M sticks. All movies created in long mode will play on either the CF or sticks.

The file sizes I've tried vary from 1-130M and they all work. The only problems I've had is getting certain movies to rip using DVDx. For example I can't get the Disney movie "The Kid" to rip and I've tried many settings in DVDx (great program). The other problem is getting the video and sound to sync but I've found that using Real Mode in DVDx helps (although it seriously locks up my computer so I can't do anything else with it).

I agree with some of the previous postings. My NX70 will lock up if I try to manipulate a movie running on the CF card. I have to stop the movie to fast forward. Sometimes when a movie is playing it is stuck in play mode and only a warm reset works to get out of that mode.

One thing that I have found to help is: In the Movie Player Options->Preferences make sure the Resume (Movie Player format) is uncheked when running a movie off the CF.

I can't get high quality to run off the CF, but they work fine on the sticks.

Hope this helps,
John

It didn't work at all (with my 512MB Sandisk) until I installed the MSPro update. I won't promise anything, but it worked for me.

Has anyone else found the MSPro update to help overcome the movieplayer problems?

I'm quite reluctant to try...don't have a MSPro stick and rather keep my Clie 'clean'

For myself, no. Originally it helped with MP3's, but later CF driver versions cured that. I wouldn't doubt that for some it may work as there are so many variables.

I've got the MSpro patch installed and it doesn't seem to make much difference. However, if I use Clieviewer I can see movies from both the MS and the CF whereas when I use just Movie Player, I can only see one device (if in masquerade "trick" mode, it sees the CF, if not, it sees the MS).

Has anyone else seen this?

ClieViewer
yes, clieviewer allows you to see both movies stored in CF & MS. :)

I installed the MSPro patch and unfortunately using my Integral 512mb CF card, no difference, long(er) movies will not play (my NX locks up and a soft reset is required).

Here's hoping the version 1.2 (or 1.1.3) improves things.

(Still happy using CF slot and loads of MP3 :))

Hello,

I faced the same problems on my 512M PQI and 1G Kingston as mentioned above with the movie that converted by the Image converter.

Afterward, I tried another two softare - Kinoma Player and TealMovie. The color in Kinoma player is bad and audio cannot sync with video in TealMovie.

Finally, I tried to use MPEG 1. I convert the video back to mpeg1 with TMPGEnc latest version with the following option:

fps : 12( internal 24 )
Bit Rate : 600kbit/s

With this setting, I create a mpeg1 clip even more than 250MB
(= 1 vcd disk ) still get very smooth video stream with sharp image

Remember to put the mpeg file into the palm like this : MSSONY\MOML0001\MOVXXXXX.MPG (XXXXX can be any numeric number )

This is my latest result on testing moview playing on the NX70. Please feel free to advice and comment if you do any better solution.

Sounds good. But presumably you took a DVD (MPEG format), converted it to AVI and then back to MPEG? Or in my simplistic and new to this tuff way am I missing something?

At this stage all I want to do is transfer my Matrix DVD to Clie...sounds simple but so far....

Hi Roy,

In my case, I am conveting the VCD into Mpeg. TMPGEnc can read VAT format. Therefore, there is no need to convert it into AVI.

Maybe you can try on some short video clips to test whether you do accept the performance before take a long time to do the convertion.

I just used DVDx to rip "Legally Blonde" into 6 chapters (about 12 minutes each).  I then used IC to transfer them to my 512mg Sandisk CF to view on my NZ90.  Oddly, chapters 1,2, 5 and 6 played back beautifully, but chapters 3 and 4 did not play at all (even though I could see the thumbnails in Movie Player).  I tried using IC to copy chapters 3 and 4 to several different 512 mg Sandisk CF cards, but they still wouldn't play.  So I transferred the files from the CF card to a 128mg MS, using a card reader and they played fine. Then, I tried IC to copy them to a 128mg Sandisk MS - and they played beautifully!  I then copied those same files from the MS to the CF using my card reader, and they didn't work on the CF cards. So, there does seem to be a problem with the CF driver???

Next, I used DVDx to rip just those 2 portions of the movie over again, (chapters 3 and 4), using the same settings as before - then used IC to copy them to the same Sandisk CF cards - and they played beautifully.  So, now I have the entire "Legally Blonde" movie on a CF card, and it playes great on my NZ90!

Go figure.......

Sorry - I meant 6 chapters at 17 minutes each.

I've had the same problem with several movies. I've emailed the files to Eruware for them to diagnose. What is odd on mine, the same files will play perfectly if they are transferred to a memory stick.

"the same files will play perfectly if they are transferred to a memory stick."

Exactly!  They play fine on the MS!  I've even re-named them on the MS and transferred them back over to the CF to see if the CF would be "tricked" into playing them, but no dice.

Please let us know what Eruware says after they analyze your files - and if they need more files, I'll be happy to send them mine!  This makes no sense.
