You are correct that you need Memory Sticks to play MP3s. The two types of Memory Sticks are MagicGate and normal Memory Sticks. The MagicGate sticks are much more expensive but they allow you to store music in ATRAC3 (as well as MP3) format which has a better compression rate - allowing you to store more music in the same amount of bits. The normal memory sticks allow you to store music in MP3 format. You can store around 2 hours or more on a normal 128MB memory stick if your MP3s are encoded at 128kbps.
So to sum it all up the important difference is do you need to have the most amount of music that you can put on one memory stick or would you be better of buying multiple normal memory sticks for the same price? I strongly suggest that you buy a normal memory stick. If you look for a while you probably be able to get a normal memory stick for around $40 from Lexar Media or SanDisk.
Hope I helped you more than I confused you :)

One more thing, ATRAC3 format is a copy protection format and MP3 is a free format.
I put 42 tracks (175 minutes) MP3 in the regular (purple) 128MB MS at 96Kbps recording speed. My ears can't tell the difference in the sound quality between this MP3 and a CD player. I'm happy to be able to fit 2.5 CDs into the MS, especially for $27 that I paid for the SanDisk 128 MB MS that I got from Amazon last month.
