NR70 & Ethernet

I was just sitting here thinking, "is there a somewhat inexpensive way of getting a NR70 on a network, doesn't even have to be wireless."

I know of one way which is a little expensive:

Bluetooth memory stick + Bluetooth WAP

Any other suggestions?

Hi -

You can get your NR on a network (sort of) using IR. What it means is that you can browse the web, send & receive emails etc. whilst using your main pc for something else (I use it for playing CS and also having an IRC channel open for chat with mates). It took a while to work out, but I finally got it figured and wrote an article on how to do it to save everybody else the hassle I had. You can find it on:

That is the only way other than the (hugely expensive) Bluetooth operation.

Hope that is what you are after. Trying to get to a situation where you can browse files etc on your network is *not* possible as far as I know (perhaps there is some software out there which could help further on that front).

I did some research on this recently and another solution is the Compex IRE201 IrdaNet. You can get it at Buy.com for 73.06 + free shipping. This might be useful when you are without desktop access. I was thinking of using at this at the school library where they have ethernet but no wireless. There was a review on PalmInfocenter & BargainPDA.

The range seems to be about 6 feet and requires some line of sight. I wonder if the line of sight will make it inconvenient. I also tried to find a small ethernet to serial PPP box of some sort but I couldn't find any. At least a cable would alleviate line of sight issues.

Thanks for the replies, but I now use my bluetooth MS with my BT to usb adapter on my pc.

I have tried the IR connection and was able to get my NR to connect to my PC. However, when I tried to use Xiino, a browser from my NR to browse the internet, it kept giving the error message "connection timeout", after looking for DNS for 30 secs or so. Any ideas?

I tried everything, I know my clie is connected to my PC, because when I check the connection log file, I see that an IP has been assigned to my clie. However, there is no DNS assigned to my clie and when I tried to browse the internet with Xiino I always get an timeout error after the clie tried to find the DNS. Can Anyone help?

Sorry, I haven't tried to set it up because I don't have an irda connection on my desktop. If I set it up in the future, I will let you know. Have you tried other software such as a simple well known PQA to see if it works? It could be the browser you are using. Perhaps you could try to ping the clie and try to ping the desktop from the clie. Standard network troubleshoorting type stuff. Good luck! :)

Probably useless suggestion, but have you got Xiino set up so that it is using the connection you have established? (ie. check in prefs)

If you have try with Pocketlink or something similar and see if the problem is with Xiino or a general problem... ie. just try some other software.
