As I sit here playing on my NX70V and thinking about the lovely new ones that I will undoubtedly be playing with at the Sony Store in a few short months, a thought came to me and grew in my head. Why DID Sony include support for memory based CF cards i
their new line of Clies?

Like all the rest of you reading this, my first thought was that Sony (for once) finally gave into the demands of their most loyal customers who were outraged by the lack of support in the otherwise wonderful NX70 and 60. But let's really think about this one. Sony knows that very few 70/60 owners are going to bother making the upgrade to the new ones and they should also know the very few people turned down getting the 70/60 because of the lack of CF support. If it was the demands of the 70/60 owners than I believe Sony would've merely made a ROM update available to all current NX owners, not only would that have been good customer service, but it would've also made us all more loyal and probably 10 times more likely to upgrade to future units.

One must also take into account why the CF slot is even present in the new units. Between the two generations of Clies, there has been an anouncement of the soon to arrive wifi memory stick. Shouldn't this memory stick make the original purpose behind the CF slot (for Sony's proprietory wifi CF card and that japanese network thing) obsolete?

One might also be tempted to bring up the frequent complaints Clie users have dropped over the small so sizes of the memory stick, something that makes the mulptiple gigabyte CF cards tempting. But that then destroys Sony's age-old policy of using strictly propietory stuff. It also doesn't take into account the new memory stick PRO which is not only compatible with the current NX series, but also has a estimated growth of up to 32Gb and beyond. I'd rather have a 1 gig memory stick than a 1 gig CF card. And why would Sony let us choose between a CF card, of which Sony will never see a penny from or a memory stick that will get Sony a pretty penny one way or another.

The only viable reason behind keeping the CF slot, let alone providing memory support for it is that Sony is planning on releasing their own brand of CF cards and/or they are going to release an extended line of accessories that are powered by the CF slot. If either one is true than I think we might see some exciting stuff coming down the line that might just work on our current beloved NXs...but then again, maybe not.

On a side note, the new slots reminded me a lot of the opening mechanism of the Minidisc players which led me to thinking that it would be cool if Sony added a Minidisc slot to a Clie. Interesting thought, but one I doubt would happen in logistical terms.

Well, that has been another one of Alex's patented ponderings. Until next time.:D

The wifi memory stick isn't from sony dip, therefore sony won't "support" it (like they don't "support" lexar).

A minidisc slot would be very interesting, although it would make the unit so wide...

Eh, sony always misses opportunities to make their customers feel safe with their purchases, by either software updates or accessories.

Good points - not sure how seriously Sony will care about loyal customers if it means keeping as much as possible proprietary
