View Full Version : Backup Buddy

I used to use a program called Backup Buddy (BB) by blue nomad.
Great little backup program.
Well since my OS upgrade form 4.1 to 5 I have been eagerly waiting for them to
release a upgrade.
And to date they have not and I am not sure when if they will.
So I have been using the backup program that came with my NX70v...
Its not bad but the only thing I would like to add it is a way to schedule backups...
Now this is what I miss most with not being able to use BB.
I used to @ 2300 have my unit automatically backup the contents form my unit onto my
MS...
Is there a program hack something that anyone knows of that will allow me to again
schedule backups from my unit onto the MS??
Thanks

I use the current backupbuddy and it works just fine

I've not heard of any hacks. BackupMan is prabably the best solution for OS5 backups (that is if backup buddy isn't compatible), which also allows for scheduling. Here's the link:

No way LarryAZ ...
I have spoken to blue nomad, and they themselves have stated that there VFS app is
not comparability with OS5.
You're thinking of BB for windows...
My windows BB still backs up during a hotsync, but that would not be affected by the
NX's OS..
I was able to backup the NR at night while I was sleeping the NR would turn itself on
and backup onto the MS and then shut off...
I think the BB program showed up as VFS app on the NR...

Actually, Backup Buddy _does_ work with OS 5 and the NX.
At least in my experience. Perhaps there are some subtle problems I haven't seen yet. But I can back things up as well as retrieve them, so as far as I'm concerned it does work.

I think we're perhaps discussing two different things, BackupBuddy and BackupBuddy VFS (both by BlueNomad). BackupBuddy, a Windows app, does work with the NX70/OS5 except for ROM backups. BackupBuddy VFS is a Palm app, that according to BlueNomad doesn't work with OS5
Hope this helps - maybe everyone knew this already, but this thread read like a clarification would help

I never had much success with restoring from external Memory with BB. But I had no issues restoring from my PC. Now that I have a NX60 I can't wait to see what it will do.

I have heard from a few sorry individuals that tried to use and restore from backup buddy on OS5. For now focus mainly on doing MS Backups, then if you want to try others fine. I am sure you don't want to find out the hard way:).

Well, I use BBVFS on my NX70V and it is working fine. I have a backup icon on the NX that lets me backup to and restore from MS. When I hot sync, BB does a backup of both the MS and the ram programs. Just for the heck of it I just now did a hard reset, and restored from MS using BBVFS, then I did another hard reset and restored with a hot sync...both times my Clie was back exactly like it was before the reset. I just realised today that their site says OS5 is not supported, but it's worked great since I got my NX in December...

It works fine but if you trying backing up your NX ROM, you will need a hard reset.

Ok my reason for generating this thread was to see if there was a app or hack that I
could use to get MSBackup to backup at a certain time.
I only brought up BB because I used to use it and it had this feature...
BB VFS DOES NOT work correctly on a OS5.
I have tried and it does not...
If it did I would not be asking this question, seeing I am a happy long time "registered"
user of there products.
And yes captainao is totally correct with his informative understanding.
Thank you

Ok here is the official response for blue nomad the makers of BB:
I'm not sure how close we are.. the desktop version should work as
long as you use it for regular RAM backup.. we apologize for any
inconvenience. It may be a while still..

I'm not sure what it is, but BB VFS originally worked on my nx, but now does not.
I'm trying out Backupman and liking it though I have not restored with it yet.

Well bbvfs works fine comes on automatically and backups and reastores just fine. Maybe you have a corrupted program nOmOn. Or maybe I am just lucky.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that BBVFS works for.

I don't know what the problem is with BlueNomad, but I have used backupbuddyVFS since it's been out (read as registered) and I am presently using it on my NX70V without a problem. I have done a full restore and it worked. I have more software running on it than what the cost of the 70V was. In otherword, I use it heavily. Like larryaz says, I must just be doing something right. May be a bug in it somewhere that we just aren't hitting.

I just don't get it.
I am a registered user of BB VFS so you would think that if I could get tit to work I would use it...
I tried I am able to use it on my Palm m515, NR series unit, and have been for years now.
I wish I could get to work but cant I hard reset and still nothing the idea that I have a corrupt version is not possible seeing I even tried to copy over that specific one
to my NX..
Still no luck.
To me its IMPOSSIBLE that anyone is or can get BB VFS to work on a NX unit...
IMPOSSIBLE.
This is kind a like the people who claim that they can use Palm desktop version 4.1, when Sony's only work on 4.0.1...
No matter how you install reinstall un-install it the Sony require 4.0.1...
Whatever I just wanted to see if there was a app that would allow me to setup a schedule for backups for the MSBACKUP that came with the NX...
I cant see having 2 on a unit...
Its a waste of memory / space, and the program works well IMHO.
I just miss the fact that I want to schedule backups because I forget and I like to test and play with this thing.
I have often needed to restore when I used BB in fact I have had to restore on my NX with MSBACKUP...
Unfortunately when I forget to backup daily I then have to try to remember what I added between the backup on the MS and the present day...
Whatever.
Thanks for reading and adding you 2 cents.

nOmON What would I gain by me teeling you it works when it doesn't. It works fine. Maybe you have a program on your NX that is interferrring. And now there are others who get it to work. So you see not everything is impossible

If PiDirect or MSMount are enabled they should be added to an exception list within there prefereces. These type of apps can interfere with other applications that access directories on a card.

I hate to the be the bearer of bad news, but BB VFS does work on my NX70v. With the encryption option even. :) I just bought the NX70v this past week, but it has been backing up at night, and I have restored stuff at least a couple of times. The only thing that I seem to have an issue with is the selective restore. The screen is not refreshed on scrolling, so it is difficult to see what I am restoring (selectively). A full restore didn't have this problem.

The Sony does work with Palm Desktop v4.1 as long as it is upgraded from Sony's v4.01 to preserve the HotSync driver. V4.1 is installed on 4 PC's at this location and work on both the NR's and NX's, but not both on the same machine.
Now as far as BB goes, I agree that the developer says it's not OS5 ready and I know some power users who also have had problems with it. If some have it working, that's fine! For myself, I would be suspect and I would not beat my Clie on it.

I agree with you Larry.
First, I'm also running 4.1 on my desktop.
Second, at one point in time I could get BB to work on my nx and then a few days later it would not. I've tried alot of different things since that first backup with BB so I know it's my own personal settings!
n2ifp, you may have someting con figured the way I have mine now or possibly the same conflicting application. Don't have a enough time to check it out right now plus I've been backing up to my pc, my notebook and ms using the new backupman app which does do scheduled backups and may not be as tempermental as bb.
Good Luck,

Gee folks,
I hadn't looked into this thread until now, but here's my experience. I have been using a registered copy of BBVFS since I purchased my NX and have had no problems. I have it do an automatic backup everyday at 7:00 am. I did a full restore after initially installing the program to verify its effectiveness and all was well. I have used it on several occasions to replace an individual file (from the backup directory). I always know I have a copy as recent as that days morning in case of trouble.
HTH....Cheers,
Rich

Well, let me throw in my 2 cents here. I use BBVFS on my NX70, and it backs up and restores just fine. In fact, though I have a registered copy, I was a JBBackup user and never used BBVFS in the past. When I upgraded from my NR to my NX, I needed a new solution, since JBBackup does not work with OS5. I tested BBVFS a few times after hard resets, and it always restored perfectly. It would be interesting to note exactly what's not working for those that claim it doesn't work on the NX.
I even have it set up to do a selective backup when I power my device off. This actually is the one problem I've noted with BBVFS. If you go into the advanced screen, it will show the file list, but clicking on the scroll bar will not refresh the screen. Using the recommendations from the Blue Nomad web page, I just use graffiti or my keyboard to enter the first letter, and then click on the names of all the apps on that page until I find the file I'm looking for. It's a pain, but using this method, I got my selective backup set up perfectly.
So, for those that are having problems, what exactly are you seeing?

I would agree with stronggeek. It must be an app that is conflicting. Bluenomad does not (at least in my experience) put updates on their web for easy retrieval. I've had to e-mail them to get the latest versions. It isn't generally available. I have moved from a palm - palm pro - IIIc - M510 - M515 - NX70V (tell me about being on the bleeding edge all the time). I had to get the updates by requesting them by e-mail. I did have an issue with the M510 till I got the update. It is still working on my 70V. Like it was said earlier, I have no reason to lie about this either, it just does work on mine.

Phew! I started reading this thread (after I just purchased the BBVFS for my NR a few hours ago) and began to get worried that it didn't work on OS5.
But it looks like more people that not have successfully been able to use it with OS5 than not. Makes me feel a little better since I'm hoping to upgrade to an NZ soon (via my extended warranty at Circuit City) once it hits the stores and I was planning on using the BBVFS as my primary restoring method. :)

Plus, with BBVFS, even if it truly didn't work on the NX or NZ, you could always use something like McFile to copy the files back to RAM. Actually, when upgrading, that may be a preferable method, since you don't want to copy any NX-specific files and BBVFS doesn't have a selective restore built-in.

Well BB VFS still doesn’t work on my NX...
I have spoken to blue nomad and they have confirmed that this is not an OS5 compatible app...
Great that you all think this is working for you but I notice that it did and then didn’t...
So trust not this app until they upgrade it...
Let me say that I supported and will support blue nomad but this is not a reliable app for OS5...
Also to whoever said that they thought this was a conflict...
Well as I previously said I hard reset and BB VFS still showed a flakey response...
Good luck and thanks.

I still haven't heard exactly what is not working for those that it's not working for. That would be helpful for the rest of us to determine what to look for.

I guess I must be one of the lucky few. I have been useing BB VFS way back from when I had my Palm 505, through my NR, and now to my NX.
In fact, when I moved from the NR to the NX, I used BB VFS's restore functionality to transfer all my stuff. I have the scheduled backup turned on and it has worked like a champ. I know this due to the few times I have had to do a complete restore.
I do agree that there is a OS5 compatibility issue with it. On rare occassions (exceedingly rare), when it is performing a scheduled backup, it will lock up. The lock up prevents the the NX from auto-shutoff, so the battery gets drained to zero. But, and I must point this out, this has only happened to me a handful of times since I have had my NX (and I have had this NX since it came out).
If you can't even get it to run, points to something else is up with what you have on your NX. Something like that, or something completely different.

I have the same problem with restore screen, other than that works like a charm in my NX70.
