[Okay, I am thoroughly confused after reading almost all posts on how to load/convert mp3 files to clie. I AM A MP3 PLAYER NEWBIE. My questions are:

1. Do you have to have conversion software inorder to use mp3 files on clie? If so, which is the least complicated?

2. Where can one download mp3 from the internet?

3. How to convert cd to mp3? Several posts really confused me.

4. Reading the manual did not help!

Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated!!

1. Yes

2. http://www.cdex.n3.net/ CDex is the easiest to use, and it's also FREE.

3. Insert the disc, and it will connect to the FreeDB and find the track names. Then click the convert button. I think it's marked as "compressed file". There are several file types available, but MP3 should be the default. If you need more help on the conversion process, feel free to contact me via e-mail.

Once you are finished, run MSimport on the Clié (while it's on the cradle). This will enable the Clié to appear as another drive in Windows Explorer. You can then drag the MP3's (in the order that you want to listen to them in) into the Palm/PROGRAMS/MSAUDIO folder.

Thank you for your reply. I actually downloaded CDex and it wouldn't install the driver correctly. I actually(after much experimenting) used the already installed Music Match which automatically converts upon recording to my music folder. I did import the files as you stated. I appreciate your help!!

Yep, i'd use Musicmatch. Its pretty simple but i think u need the pro version. As for downloading mp3s, check out a p2p file sharing program. Otherwise just do it legally. Kazaa has legal files for download (gold icons) if you wanna hear some new music. This link should be usedful;

Kwdietrich1,

#1: I just copy mp3 files to /palm/programs/msaudio on MS, then launch audioplayer & enjoy! Anyone, am I missing something?
#2: Kazaa is good for downloading mp3s
#3: I'd imagine that your cd burner came w/ sw to convert cds to mp3s

Do you know how to use MS Import on the Clie in concert with the Windows Explorer file manager on the desktop PC?

Oh, yes are you running a Windows operating system?

Do you know the basics of file management?

Basic MP3 Recording Settings when  or downloading or coping from CD

44.1 KHz sampling rate

96kbps bit rate

No variable bit rate (VBR)

No ProMP3

I make my MP3's from CD's using Music Match, there are others too. Then I copy them to the Clie through MS Import and Windows Explorer to a folder on the Memory Stick called /Palm/Programs/MSAudio/

In Windows Explorer, it shows up as another disk drive letter, even though it's a memory stick, after you tap on MS Import and then tap on connect. Then wait about 20 seconds until all the beeping is done.

Are you able to follow all this so far? If not, it might be best to latch onto a local friend and have them help you.

In these forums, having a certain amount of computer knowledge is necessary and assumed.

Your right the Sony manual will not be of much help. Sony pushes it's ATRAC3 proprietary music compression format. Most of us do not use it for certain reasons, some of which are the expense and it being cumbersome to use.

The first thing you have to do is create a couple of MP3's by recording them from a CD with music. Once they are created, then they have to be transfered to a memory stick in your Clie.

I hope this helps some and makes it a little clearer.

Hi,
Where did you get this information from ?
I was looking for this and did not find it (not easy to choose google keywords for searching).
Is 96kbps the only supported rate ?
Because on my pc I prefer to have a copy of my CDs in a better quality, since I play them on a good hifi system. If I have to duplicate at 96kbps, this will be a lot of work.
Thanks

The NX now has a REAL playlist, so no need to jump through hoops copying your music in a specific order.

The Clies can do VBR MP3 files. At least the older N/T/NR series can. Haven't tried it on an NX, yet. But I'd be surprised. And you can go MUCH higher bit rates (up to 256K) - unless you want poor quality for more space.

Most of my MP3 stuff is VBR at about 192K average data rate. Plays great on both an N760c and an NR70v.

You do not need the pro version of musicmatch to comvert cd's to mp3's. I use it and it works fine. Just load a cd, keep a check next to the songs you want to record and hit the red record button. You can then move it to your playlist and from there, through MS import move it to your clie via MSAUDIO file.

I have several old time radio programs that I would like to listen to on my CLIE. They are 24kbps and 32kbps. Do I need to convert them to 96kbps to play them. Sound quality on those types of programs is not that important, since they were that good to begin with. Everytime I try the MSImport method to get them on the CLIE, I get an unsupported file type message when I try to play them using the audio player. Any ideas, or any other players that would support bit rates <96kbps.

I have most of my mp3 records anywhere between 128 and 160 and they work fine after transferring to the audiofile area of the Nx60 on my memory stick - no problems here - I would advise using better headphones - the sound is great.

Is anybody aware of a program that can batch convert VBR mp3s to "non-VBR" mp3s ? I have a mp3 live recording of one my favorite bands right here and I would like to get it to work on MX70V without doing a mp3-->wav-->mp3 conversion manually...

Thanks in advance,

QD

NX does NOT support VBR. All my MP3s are 128kps...

You could download the LAME MP3 writer plugin to Winamp, queue up all your VBR'd MP3s, set the MP3 writer to output then press play and go away (it will suck up ALL of your free CPU time unless you start it at a low priority!) and come back to find a directory full of nice, CBR files :-)

I've been doing that to recompress the MP3s I put on the clie down to 96Kbps to save space ... its the most convenient way I know of to do it.

when you want to transfer acceptable files to the clie, all you have to do is open MSimport on the clie and then you only have to drag and drop your files on the MSexport icon on the desktop. It knows in what folder to put them in the clie. It works for MP3, for isilo, for flash etc...

Check out DBPowerAmp. http://www.dbpoweramp.com I use it to batch convert my wav files to MP3, move them to the destination of my choice and delete the originals when all done. It will also convert in place variable or fixed if you like. I had it convert a few items right on my stick without moving them to and fro. It will also encode to mp3 on the fly from a live source from line input. Best part it's FREE.

Just use BeSweet with Lame. (Besweet allows to reencode files from about every source fileformat and apply filters like normalisation as well, all without temporal files)

After you've installed BeSweet, you can use this script to recompress all MP3 files in a directory of your choice (including sub-dirs)

Create a file named ReMP3.bat
Open it in Notepad and copy/paste the following lines:

@echo off
if "%1"=="-convert" goto convert
set bspath=D:\BeSweet
FOR /R %%i IN (*.mp3) DO call ReMP3.bat -convert "%%i" "%%i.NX.mp3"
goto :end
:convert
if not exist %3 "%bspath%\BeSweet.exe" -core( -input %2 -output %3 ) -ssrc( --rate 44100 ) -ota( -g max ) -boost( 50.95 ) -lame( -q 0 -b 128 )
:end

Replace the "set bspath=D:\BeSweet" line with the directory wher you've installed BeSweet to.

Now, just save the ReMP3.bat to your MP3 dir, start it and it will produce an NX compatible file.NX.mp3 file

-------------

edit:
Tiny mistake in the "%bspath%\BeSweet.exe" line. Fixed now, just copy/paste again:
if not exist %3 "%bspath%\BeSweet.exe" -core( -input %2 -output %3 ) -ssrc( --rate 44100 ) -ota( -g max ) -boost( 50.95 ) -lame( -q 0 -b 128 )

My fellow OGGians can use this script, titled DeOGG.bat:

@echo off
if "%1"=="-convert" goto convert
set bspath=D:\BeSweet
set oggpath=D:\ogg
FOR /R %%i IN (*.ogg) DO call DeOGG.bat -convert "%%i" "%%i.NX.mp3"
goto :end
:convert
if not exist %3 "%oggpath%\oggdec.exe" %2 -o TEMP.WAV
if not exist %3 "%bspath%\BeSweet.exe" -core( -input TEMP.WAV -output %3 ) -ssrc( --rate 44100 ) -ota( -g max ) -boost( 50.95 ) -lame( -q 0 -b 128 )
Del TEMP.WAV
:end

You must have BeSweet and OGGTools installed. Also, you have to change the
set bspath=D:\BeSweet
set oggpath=D:\ogg
lines to match your system.
This script will create a temp WAV file in the current path. Sorry about that, but I know of no other way to do it.
