I've had an NX70v for 5 months with no problems-running all kinds of programs, wonderslik, but no hacks.

I bought an NX60 for my girlfriend 6 days ago and didn't load anything exotic onto it. I tried to keep it as simple for her and operationally stable as possible.

But then it would not power up. While on it worked fine, but once it was turned off it would not turn back on. The first time it happened she thought the battery had died. She put it in the charger for awhile. The orange light was on but it would not power up in the charger. She did a soft reset and it came back to life. She opened the clie datebook app to add date info. then turned it off and again it would not power up. Another soft reset and it came back to life. While I watched it power up I noticed that the battery icon indicated "full". Then she opened the clie datebook app again then exited to home and once turned off it would not power up even with a "tap" (short push of the resect button) soft reset. So we did a hard reset, then we deleted everything on the memory stick and it came back and functioned normally for two hours then again it would not power up once turned off. Instead of doing another hard reset I held in the reset button for about 12 seconds and it soft booted up. Also, it won't beep when it's in the "dead" state if the memory stick it removed or inserted.

Ok it just got weirder - I did another hard boot and everything went fine ("delete all files? yes!"). I got to the home/menu screen and then the display started flickering and fading to all white. At the same time the speaker began crackling and emiting a coarse tone. I figured something inside was shorting/self destructing so I tried to turn it off. IT WOULDN'T POWER DOWN! In desperation I tried another soft boot - same death fade to white, with coarse tone but this time during the black "Sony" logo intro screen. I engaged hold switch to and rebooted again to try and prevent the unit from powering up. It worked.

Another hard reset. The unit seems to work properly until I enter data into the Sony datebook app.-(I'm only running only the rom based programs that load after a hard reset). Again it won't power back up.

Sorry for such a long post but I wanted to included as much detail in case someone had a solution/or it interested in technical issues and problems. So far my solution is a trip back to CompUSA.

I would say it's definitely a hardware problem. The powering on/off is all done electronically and under control of the processor. All pushing the button does is send a signal to the processor. These Clie's are quite sophisticated and complex with a plethora of cables and connectors too. What's really amazing is, for the most part, they are fairly reliable. There is many points inside the unit that can be a potential trouble maker. If you can exchange it, then that's the route to go. I also understand about keeping things simple :). Sorry to hear about all the difficulty, but why put up with it if you get a replacement. Thanks for sharing :)!

I too am amazed at what the new pda's (esp the Sonys) can do. They are extremely complex, well designed, powerful, beautiful tools. Considering how reliable my 70v has been I'm not too put off by the 60's failure.

A week after I got my NX70 I had the same sort of thing happen as what you described in the first half of your post. Hauled that puppy back to the store - "This unit is definitely defective" they said, and handed me a new box. I have read one other post on here of someone going through the same thing.

ok here's the last installment of my long post...

When I get CompUSA to return the NX60, the unit will only power up after a soft reset and the battery was almost dead! The night before the battery was at 90+%. Very weird. Anyway the CompUSA guy was cool and more knowledgeable that most of the CompUSA drones that I meet. He seemed impressed with some of the cool things that I've done with my NX70v and quickly processed an exchange for me. It's nice to meet people that try to do their job well and try to take care of the customer.

The End...
or The Beginning??
