I have Windows XP and NX60. I had to do hard reset today, which I have done several times in the past, but this last attempt
continues to have third party software to bleed into my new set-up, and causes Fatal Alert with PDA crashing.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Clie desktop and removed MS stick from PDA, but LX and other softwares seem to come back on the set-up even if I have deleted them.
Where do I find these programs to shut them out of the set-up ? I don't see them in looking through explorer or Add/remove programs. My time of essence and have to do this new set up this weekend.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

are you hotsycing the backup folder back? if you hard set to clean things up, start from scratch (delete the contents of backup first) and manually install (one by one if neccessary) the files from the original zips.

my computer/program files/sony handheld/{insert hotsync name here}/backup

delete all programs you don't want restored from this folder, perform a hard reset and hot sync. you might want to install a program at a time. Fully test it, then add another. It takes a while but narrows down any offending software.

The problem is I do not know where to look for the third party programs. I do not have backbuddy or any other back up other than Clie desktop.

It's not that bad, got to:

my computer/C drive/program files/sony handheld/{insert hotsync name here}/backup

that is where all your programs are backed up to. was there a particular program that causes the crash?

The desktop backup folder is all too easily corrupted. I keep rolling backups on two memory sticks, plus keep copies of the memory sticks in a spare folder on my hard drive. There have been times when I have needed to nuke everything, memory stick, hard reset, and erase the desktop backup folder. Get into a routine of using MS Backup and make multiple copies (not at the same time, over days), because you may not know when something gets corrupted and you may have to fall back a backup or two.

I just rename the folder and it creates a new one . . . then I've got my renamed backup for . . . er . . . backup. :D

Doesn't it then throw it into the archive folder? Or is that only when you delete it on the Clie that it throws the back up file into archives?

Backup Man does a great job of doing multiple backups, but then it throws it all onto on stick. I personally keep 4 backups, though I am considering going for a full half dozen.

I don't think this is your problem, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway. Make sure you are not using JackFlash and moving apps into flash memory. A hard reset will not remove these apps unless you move them back into RAM first.

Good grief. Your entire life must center on your clie, lol.

Last week I noticed all my contacts on my clie disappeared. I adjusted some settings in Pocketmirror pro and hotsynced. I watched every one of my contacts disappear in outlook. I had no backups of outlook so I lost everything. I managed to salvage a month old version of my contacts from Palm Desktop but it was missing a bunch of newer entries. I wasted 2 hours that morning in a panic trying anything I could think of to recover the data. I have no desire to go through that again so I'll invest in the 40 megs or so of memorystick space for a little piece of mind.

When you delete from the Clie, it backs it up to the archive folder. It only takes a couple minutes to backup. A good time to backup  is when making a pit stop, a phone call, or getting a drink of water.
