Special card reader feature

The NZ's in Japan have a special card reader function, located at the bottom of the keyboard. Mine (just got it last week and it kicks ***) is from the US which doesn't support this. Anyone know if it can be switched on?

I think it's not actually present in American units (it's a hardware issue, not software).

ic. I thought I saw somewhere on this thread that they had turned it off on US models. Oh well.
