Okay, bear with me here. I'm new to the pda world.

My wife teaches an online course at the local college and needs to access her email daily. A couple of times during the school year we are out of town for a day or two. She has a basic mobile phone plan with limited time, the phone is not IR capable, and there is no cable available to connect it to her new SJ20 anyway. Given all of this, I wonder if it is possible to access her email from wherever we stay, with a wired modem? I have a copy of Cliemail that should allow direct access. However, I have a list of questions:

Is what I've described even possible with the SJ?
Does Cliemail work with the SJ, or is there something else that will allow for this scenario?
Can I use any modem, or are there some special requirements?
Where can i get a cable to connect the two-- or can I use the hotsync cable (assuming the modem has a USB port)?
What settings do I need to make to the SJ?
Her ISP and email is through AOL-- does this pose any special problems?

Sorry to eat up so much space. Thanks for any help.

Did you try http://thesupplynet.com ? I think they only have cables for digital phones. I looked around for a modem and found the Pegasus III 56K Modem( http://www.410palm.com/modem.html ) which has an IR interface. It's hard to find and I heard that it didn't work very well. I found Supply Net had a cable to connect my SJ30 and Sprint/Samsung phone and decided to order it. They can put a modem on a CF card but you can't find one to work with a CLIE SL/SJ.

Good luck.

Even better, get a psion travel modem, it works at 56k, I use the Eudora mail program with one, you can get them from www.expansys.com

Good luck!

Thanks for the help neilyx and nick_todd.

Neilyx, you wrote that you heard the Pegasus didn't work very well. Do you remember the source of this information?

Expansys says the Psion is discontinued. I have been able to locate a few sites that carry it (and man, it's not cheap!), but several are out of stock. I'll keep trying.

Nick_todd, is there much difficulty in configuring the Clie to work with the Psion?

Nick,

Is the Psion a cabled or an IR interface modem?

gotr6,

Don't remember where I saw that about the Pegasus. Probably while searching through one of these forums, here or elsewhere.

Got my cable yesterday. Can't directly get my pop mail from my ISP because of SSL authentication issues. I can get to it through my Yahoo mail account, but that is cumbersome. My phone connects at 14,400 baud. :( I would think that Sprint digital PCS could do better than that.

I know Verizon has a "fast track connection" or something. Sprint might as well, but it probably costs more and you'd have to ask around for it.

The psion modem is used over IR, it's literally a point and shoot job to set it up, in prefs go to connection and set up a new one called IRDA, settings are as follows,
connect to = modem
via = infrared
dialing = touchtone
volume = low

all done and should work now, some shops in the UK are selling them off cheap, try Rymans or Dixons if you're in UK, if not ebay will probably be the best bet, guessing about £30 either way!

how does the psion modem connect with a phone? does it need to connect with a special mobile phone, or does it connect directly to a phone line?
also, i went on the expansys site and could not find one that worked with a clie. can you help?
