View Full Version : How long to data loss

My T615c usually loses it data within hours of reaching the critical state, where the unit will not power on. I was under the impression that the unit would have enough battery power to retain my data for at least a couple of days.
I have been e-mailing Sony customer support, and they told me
"If the battery status remains at 0 for a few hours or sometimes less than an hour data will be lost. We suggest you charge your CLIE a little every day in order to prevent loss of data. It only takes a few minutes to generate a full charge if you do it everyday."
Anyone else have the same problem.

Hmm...doesnt sound to outta line but Ive never to to that point.....at 10% the memory stick stops working and that pretty much renders my unit (the way I have it setup) useless. The lowest Ive gone is to like 3% and then I charged it within the next 12 hours and it was fine.

I usually don't run it down to 0 either, but my wife has run it down playing bejeweled a few times, and I lost everything. Luckily I had a backup on memory stick and/or a recent hot sync. What bothers me is that the purpose of the auto power off when the voltage reaches a critical point, is to save your data from loss. It should be able to hold enough power to keep your data for days, not hours.
For example the Tungsten-T will hold data for up to 21 days, after the unit's battery gets to the point where it no longer powers on. Even the IPAQ, lasts for four days.

A friend of mine had this very problem with his T615, so he asked me if it was normal to lose all data if you let the battery die. The answer I got from several people was that Clies run on RAM memory only (for now) so if you let your Clie (whatever model) die, you will lose your data, all of it. You need to charge it regularly, or back it up periodically or have an app like Backup Buddy or something like it to send all your data in RAM to the memory stick, so when you're Clie dies you only have to tell the memory stick to give you your data back without doing a hotsync.

All Palm OS models store thier data in RAM. TEach unit has a "critical" voltage level, where the unit will not Power on any more, but should still have enough power to keep your data safe in ram. In the Tungsten T's this "critical" level will keep your data safe for 21 days. Even Pocket PC's will keep data safe for four days. I cannot believe that Sony's units will lose all data within hours of reaching this critical level.
For Example, your on a trans atlantic flight for 8 hours, you play bejeweled for 3 hours and drain your battery down to 0. You cannot charge your unit in the air. All data is lost.
If you had a Palm or even a Pocket PC, the unit would shut off and retain all data for many days.
I think Sony Tech support is giving me the run around.

I think you're right Paul, Sony should take a serious look at this problem, and fix it in the very near future, if they don't want the competition to steal costumers from under their noses.
