well, the answer to the thread question is no... they only play mpeg 1 and mpeg 4 ....
the answer to your above question is yes, the difference between mpeg1 and mpeg2 is not quality, but efficiency of the compression... i.e. how many bits per second is required...

MPEG1 and MPEG2 *do* differ in quality. MPEG1 is 320x240 (or 352) with one compression scheme. MPEG2 is 640x480 (or 720) using the same compression DVD uses, and uses a LOT more bandwidth, about twice that of mpeg1 if I recall w/o looking. And SVCD is somewhere between VCD and DVD, and at 480x480 resolution, but mpeg2.

I'd like to know which format to encode movies to, to play on the internal Movie PLayer (NOT Movie player format) - see when you can choose between MPEG - and MovePLayer fomats..
so..which MPEG? 4 ? And which 'profile' to encode to.. and with what?

Hairy, you can encode either format in different resolutions... AFAIK... the compression technique is different, just like MPEG4 is a different compression technique...

Greg, you are absolutely correct. I was just stating the generals of what is often recorded in each format. Tho I tried something as a test one time. I used TMPGenc to crunch a movie down to VCD sized 320x240.. and again from the original dvd, but forcing it to 160x160.. came out same exact file size using VCD compressor on each.. that one stumped me. I was hoping to get some movies smaller for the Clie.
My new Sony digital camera records movies in Mpeg format (not sure if 1, 2 or 4) at 640 X 480. For some reason, my NZ90 won't play the movie unless I convert it to MVP format. The movie shows up in the "list" of available movies, but it locks up the Clie or gives me an error message. I am totally stumped by this, especially since the movies taken by my older Sony digital camera, recorded at 320 X240, play beautifully in the Clie with no conversion. All I do is take the MS out of the older camera and put it into the Clie, and I have a movie. There is no other difference between the movies that I can find.
Does anyone know WHY this might be?
