The Sunday ad for BestBuy here in Reno, NV shows a 50 dollar price drop on the SJ33. Anyone else around the country notice a price drop too?

It's listed at $249.99 on the Sonystyle.com website currently. It was $299, wasn't it ? (I'm not from the U.S. so I don't know)

You are correct.  It used to be $299.99; but it now shows it priced at $249.99.

It should be priced at $200 imo

If they priced the SJ33 at $199, they'd have to drop the price on the SJ22. Not that that's a bad idea or anything...

Having the SJ22 at the old price of the SL10 would be a true clie winner. Same with SJ33 at the old SJ22 price.

I never buy electronics when they first come on the market. The price generally drops in a relatively short time.

Although... the opposite can also be true. I noticed the Dell Axim X5 originally came out at $299, and they raised the price to $349 after they saw how popular it became. Recently they lowered the price to $325, and are now referring to at as a new "low price". How about lowering it back to the original $299 ?  Sheesh !!!

:D :D :D

Zire 71 is still better in terms of "bang for your buck"....

Unfortunately you basically lose all your hacks which is a glaring flaw of OS5.X.

However OS 5 brings new processor speeds within reach...even without the overclocking hacks.

If this qualification is limited to hardware, then the Zire 71 is a better deal. But then, using this line of reasoning most PPC models would be considered a better "bang for your buck" than the average PalmOS PDA because of their faster processor speeds. I don't really think that line of reasoning is accurate.

It's been said in many other threads that it all really depends on what you want.

I bought my SJ33 before the price drop. So why did I buy an SJ33 at $299 instead of a Zire 71?

For me the form factor and better battery life were too good to pass up.

In summary:
(SJ33 form factor + integrated hardcover + battery life + Graffiti 1) > (OS 5.2 + camera + ARM processor)

True but some people have come to appreciate the amount of customization that hacks afford them. It's nice to be able to customize your device the way you want it instead of what someone else thinks will be acceptable. The faster processors are not evident in all applications either as some people have reported.

Not necessarily, when the NX60 is $299. Sony is already launching their answer to the Zire71 with price cuts across the board, and then flashy new hardware.

I agree with Seul, I did exactly the same thing.

I also chose the clie over the Zire 71 because:

Clies had been mp3 players for a lot of time now, and Palm is just starting to use that technology, I don't now how does the mp3 player quiality on the 71 is. I needed to buy memory cards for the zire, for my Sj-33 I had 6 memory sticks already. Plus an employee at Compusa told me that Mp3 player was not provided on the zire, while in the Clie it was working as soon as I got it out of the box.

With my SJ-33 I have a small photo album ready to use with my Sony F707 D. Camera, or with my newest adition, the very sexy U-20 Camera.

Finally I have to say that It was not easy at all chosing my new handheld, The Zire camera was nice, and OS 5 looked so good on the Zire bright screen, but now that the SJ-33 is priced @ 250 I wouldn't even consider buying the Zire.

Just checked SonyStyle.ca and the price of the SJ33 is $399 Cdn. That's a $100 drop and puts it $50 under the Zire 71. Probably what it should have been originally.

yay, now the SJ33 is priced right. Good job Sony. Now do so for the NZ90 @ $999.

In Toronto, SJ33 is selling for $400 cdn (dropping from $500cdn)
!-_-! And, SJ30's selling for $300 cdn (it was $400cdn).

Well! I believe that Sony cuts their price in order to attract people to buy clie before they enter university/have their summer break. Thats a good news!

However, SJ33/SJ30 are both based on 66/33Mhz CPU which are considered to be slow. I believe that SJ33 or SJ22 will be replaced by new SJ series soon which will use Intel X-Scale CPU.

Thanks for the heads up on the price drop.  I was able to return my unit and get a new one for $50 less at BestBuy.

Both the SJ33 and Zire 71 are really nice units, I think both Sony and Palm deserve kudos. I think Sony did need to reduce the SJ33 price to bring in line with the Zire, which they now have.

They are actually pretty similar units to me (I've used both), each with some advantages and disadvantages.

That being said, I am really looking forward to what Sony will come up with next. I think they need to hit the $300 price point with their successor to the SJ33 (mid-range multimedia device.) It should also be OS5 with a fast processor. I wouldn't expect it to also have a camera, so it needs some sort of feature to 'match' the Zire's camera- more RAM, better audio (the SJ33 already has better audio quality), 640 x 480 screen?

If they came out with an OS5 SJ33 with 32 MB RAM for $300, I'd be all over it. The faster processor is not a super big deal, but is nice for larger files and programs like AcidImage.

I keep trading in for new units, but EBay makes it a reasonable proposition!
