View Full Version : More Problems: ZLauncher Related?
I have found that with certain apps, if ZLauncher (3.12) as default launcher is selected in ZL preferences, that when I exit those apps using the silkscreen Home button to return to ZLauncher my T665 crashes. This does NOT happen when I use the default launcher or I un-check the ZL as default launcher choice and launch the app from within ZL but then exit to the default launcher. This did not used to happen. I've uninstalled ZLauncher and all associated files using ZLManager, however, I found that ZL was still registered when I reinstalled it, is there an extra ZL file somewhere?
Also I have totally removed any version of PDA Defense Pro.
The apps that crash upon exit to ZL so far:
Pocket Chess 1.1 (haven't used it in a while)
Maxilaris Note 3.2 (used to work fine)
AppIcon
UnDupe
It seems like all of my problems started after I installed PDA Defense Pro 3.1a, (night of 5/22) but since then I hard reset and restored. Removed PDADef Pro, AppIcon, UnDupe, FontHack 123.
Any ideas as to what happened/is happening would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I haven't experienced that problem and of the apps you mentioned, I also use FontHack123 and AppIcon. I am currently using v320b4 of ZLauncher, but didn't have the problem with v312 either. Many shareware apps leave their registration info behind when they are uninstalled, unless you use something like Uninstall Manager to uninstall it.
OK. I uninstalled ZLauncher using ZLManager, then doublechecked with FileZ and Uninstall Hack. It was gone.
Uninstalled Maxilaris Note and also doublechecked.
Reinstalled each, one at a time.
Still have the same *bleeping* problem.
As an experiment, I tried Maxilaris Note with Launcher X as the default launcher, no problem there.
I don't remember the Note/ZL conflict prior to installing PDA Defense Pro 3.1a, I've sent an email to their tech support. I spent $29.95 for it last May (2002), but now I don't want to use it anymore, I might try TealLock (I did a quick search here at CS and read generally positive things about it, definitely nothing as tremendously negative as I've experienced with PDADef Pro).
This whole experience may cause me to reevaluate using a third-party launcher as well. It's more important to reliably launch and quit apps and have a stable PDA than it is to have a cool launcher with a neat looking background (obviously). Granted, ZLauncher is more than just eye-candy.
AND I'm still not getting email notifications when there's a reponse in any of my threads.
Mind you don't blame ZL for poor development by other developers. I have heard in other threads that there are issues with PDA Defense too.
Sid,
As we were discussing in that other thread about PDA Defense, I had problems with their previous release causing instability in ZL as well. I tried to reproduce your crash with AppIcon (don't have any of the other programs) and it works fine for me (ZL 3.20B2; AppIcon 1.3; PDA Defense Pro 3.0a). Not really the same setup you have, but just adding my info for reference. Also, I have an NR, which should behave pretty similar to a T665.
I hope you don't give up on ZL. I've never found it to be unstable, except for the short time I was using the second-to-last PDA Defense update. Hope your e-mail gets a response from the PDA Def people -- I've always found it to be a very useful program and would hate to have to abandon it (not to mention pay for something else!) Please keep us updated!
ZL320b4 works fine in my T665c too.
upto this moment no big bug found and all softwares are happy together.

I'm not blaming ZL, it's been a stable and useful app on my T665 since I bought it.
I'm just puzzled as to why seemingly so many things/apps got screwed up and some stayed screwed up even after removing PDADef Pro 3.1a as well as the steps that I took and already mentioned previously.
I think that Maxilaris Note is less stable than I first thought (and I've always recommended it to others) It acted flaky with the default launcher after I set an alarm with it, while using EasyLock set to Log In After Alarms.
I could go back to BugMe! or the recent DiddleBug (though it's low-res). At least Note didn't cost much because I got it through a competitive upgrade switching from BugMe!, which was free when I registered my Clie!
The other thing is, like many users here at CS, I have a lot of third-party apps/hacks/DAs, etc. and usually they all work together nicely, but when multiple problems happen it takes longer to solve them.
Thanks for the suggestions/words of encouragement.

The answers I've received from Asynchrony (PDA Defense) in the past usually ended up blaming other apps, while claiming that there's no problem with theirs.
Most likely the response I get this time will be similar, especially due to all of the variables involved.
I may try the 30 day demo of TealLock and say goodbye to PDAdef Pro, from reading the manual, it sounds like TealLock now does just about everything that PDADef Pro does, but at a little more than half the price. Maybe TealPoint offers a competitive upgrade price.

Sid, is it possible there is a conflict between PDA Defense and Easy Lock? Since they perform some of the same functions and Easy Lock is a hack, perhaps they are doing battle.

No, EasyLock 3.9 actually has an option to check for PDA Defense compatability, and they work together pretty well.

I have ZL 3.20b4, FontHack123, EasyLock 3.9, and host of other hacks and DAs on my T665C and everything plays nice. I've never used PDA Defense, nor wish to do so because of its intrusiveness into the system. It may be that you backed up your files while PDA Defense was active and whatever modifications it made to the files is still present after the restore. You may need to reload ZL and the offending apps from their original archives to lose the problems. Or to be really safe, hard reset and load everything from scratch, eschewing PDA Defense.

tanker_bob,
Do you (or anyone else) happen to know if TealLock is less invasive than PDA Defense? My search at CS did not turn up that much actual user experience with TealLock.
I'm not reinstalling any version of PDA Defense.
I read on the ZLauncher email list that someone had a problem with PDA Defense when it encrypted the ZLauncher files, maybe that was some of my problem.
Things are pretty much back to normal on my T665.
Though, at least for now, I'm not reinstalling FontHack123 (I'll make do with ThinFontFix) nor AppIcon.
Installed UnDupe 1.9.2, ran it from the default launcher without a problem, I have not tried it yet with ZLauncher.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Sid,
I don't know anything about TealLock. I'm sure someone will happen by that uses it, though. Glad you are back to almost normal. FontHack123 should work fine if you reinstall from scratch.

I have been a user of it and did have it on my NX for a while. They for some reason did not want to address an error message that I would get while using the program or at least neglected to inform me of changes as they do have the beta at their site. I will try again on their new release and use VisKey for now. I don't know what you want to know by "invasive" though:)
Thanks Tixx,
The invasiveness of PDA Defense is that it can catalogue all of the files on the PDA for encryption, launch protection, and auto-deletion purposes, plus it installs a small file that survives soft resets to prevent the security from being defeated.
I had it on my m505 and could not enter the debug mode to upgrade from OS 4.0 to OS 4.1, I had to uninstall PDA Defense to complete the upgrade.
Also there have been times when certain apps would cause PDA Defense to freeze when scrolling through the launch-protect or encryption set up screen.
It's a powerful security app, probably more than I need (I also use SplashID).
That's why I am interested in TealLock, it may play nicer with my other apps and still provide enough security for me since I'm not an international spy or anything ;)
[Edit]
What is VisKey? Where can I get it?
Thanks.

Google turned up VisKey at http://www.viskey.com/viskeypalm/index.html . Rather than entering a code like Palm Security or a button combination like EasyLock, you tap on parts of an image (user definable) in the correct order to unlock the device. Pretty clever, but I like the convenience of EasyLock myself for repeated user access when locked.
Thanks for the VisKey info tanker_bob,
I'm still using EasyLock, also pAutoLock which will automatically lock the system after a reset or a pre-set amount of time.

I'm not sure if TealLock does all that for security as you mention above. I really suggest trying it as it is stable software for the most part and I know you can even put it in ROM (via instructions) to survive a hard reset. I beta tested VisKey and it is pretty cool software. Not as strong as PDA D or TealLock, but nice for now and it does survive a soft reset too.

VisKey and TealLock both have that option.

EasyLock also locks the system upon system auto-off, and also survives a soft reset. Although, after a soft reset you need to enter you system password.

OnlyMe has a beta out for OS5 PDAs . . . it's a great little app, survives reset and is non-invasive. It also has a multitude of settings so you can set it up however you like.
I don't know if they have a release date written in stone. Might be worth a quick email.

Is there a version for OS 4?

Anyone else notice a crash when trying to launch Fonts4NX from ZLauncher after selecting a font for the first time?
I have to exit ZLauncher and run Fonts4NX from the Clie Launcher.
