View Full Version : How to Improve Bluetooth Range/Signal?

My BT dongle is attached directly to my PC and I can BT-hotsync and surf internet from another room, with 2 walls blocking its wall, about 5m from my PC.
However I failed to hotsync if I move away to another room, about 7m away with 3 walls blocking its transmission.

Is there any way I can improve the range or signal?

A stupid idea....
What about using a (1.5metre) USB cable extension for the BT dongle...and put it up high....
Will it make any difference? :D

The problem is primarily with the Clie, which is a "Class-3" BT device with a maximum (theoretical) range of 10 meters (33 feet). Using a Class-1 link to the computer will improve range a little (very little - Class-1 is supposed to go 100 meters, but this requires BOTH devices to be Class-1).

Testing with an IOGear Class-1 dongle vs a D-Link Class-3 dongle gained an extra meter or 2 in range.

Using an MSI motherboard with built-in BT gained another meter or 2 over the IOGear dongle, probably due to the external antennae. I haven't tried using an extension cable on the IOGear dongle to see if it would gain any range, but that is not as stupid as you might think. Moving the dongle away from the metal and electronics in the computer will almost certainly reduce interferance, which should improve range (at least a little).

stick a 50 foot antenna! :D lol jk. well, I think I found the major time outs for your connection, it has to go through 2 walls! try one. lol

Thanks GeekGod.
Guess I'd try a longer USB cable see if it might work. And the fact that the dongle is attached directly to my PC might gets some interference from PC and some other electronics..

Or may be I'd consider Sensei's suggestion to get a 50ft antenna. :D...(but where am i going to put it??)
