I hope that the answer to this question is not top-secret, but I have been wondering lately at how did the compact flash driver come into existence. I mean, how exactly did one company fail miserably with their attempt, and another do so well? How was the slot driver made? How long did it take to build? How could this be done with other peices of hardware on the Clié? I am very curious.

If the other company you are talking about is Pocket Solutions (Did i get the company name right?) I don't think they failed misserably, they just cut their losses when another company beat them to market with a working driver.

Eruware had many very talented and diligent men behind the CF Driver project. Amazing ability in that team.

I think that they said that they were going to quit the development long before the beta driver was announced.

Development of the CF driver was not a high priority for them. I think they were called Soft Pocket Solutions for PPC products.

EruWare had the beta ready a month before the other developer and was going to charge considerably less. Soft Pocket Solutions decided to cut their losses and go on to other things.
