View Full Version : How Can I use my NX as a Cell Phone
I am trying to limit the number of devices I carry around and I am down to my NX and a Cell Phone.
I am trying to figure out how I can make the NX act like some of those PDA Phones I have been seeing.
1. Does anyone know a way to use my NX as a Cellular Phone?
2. Does anyone know a way to use my NX as a Text Messaging Device? (basically email or phone capabilities)
3. Does anyone know how to use my NX to access the Internet via data connectivity (through a service Provider like Sprint, AT&T, Cingular, etc)? I want to send emails and surf the web when I am traveling.
THANKS for any replies!!!

the nx itself cannot be a phone.
at least 3 ways to connect to a phone (for sms, surfing etc):
ir (but most u.s. phones especially motorla clams do not have ir ports)
cable (e.g., supply net)
bluetooth (unless you buy a gsm export phone, you are limited to at&t and t-mobile se t61i.
once you get connected, there are several sms software (for text messaging), and several email and internet clients.
you can also "share" the calander and address between pda and phone, limited the key entry to sync both.
on the other hand, you also might want to check out the new expanded phones (e.g, se p800, kyocera, toshiba, etc) with palm os. then you'd only have 1 device. but if you already have the nx, you still need the phone.

NX, probably not (no bluetooth).
NZ, perhaps (in theory).
1) Get or make drivers for a cell phone CF card (I've heard of them online, just don't remember where).
2) Do the same for one of the bluetooth headsets (Jabra, etc).
Theoretically it should be possible. I've just not seen anyone try to do it yet.

don't forget that you'd probably only have 4 hours of cell use on nz battery. by the time you figure out the hardware aspect, there will realy will be good working all in one unit, with decent screen, reception, memory, and battery life
considering the size (and capabilites) of pda's now, many have actually been getting larger. and of course one of the obvious limitations is that we don't want tiny screens on a pda, so its a bit of a catch 22.
cell phones on the other hand, have generally been getting smaller.
if you want an all in one, you're better off getting a similiar phone, rather than getting your pda to function as a phone.
they have just annouced a 1 megapixel phone now, about the size of a mot v60.

I know you're not supposed to believe everything you see on TV, but I was watching a Korean show a couple of days ago and they were using a NX70V as a cell phone. I don't know what show it was. We only have the Korean channel because my sister is so into Korean stuff.

Wait a few months, and Sony will have a clié with phone capabilities in the market.

Yes the land of the free is usually behind in technology like this......you should see the phone they have available overseas.

I used to only want to carry one device. I purchased a kyocera smartphone, then a treo handspring, then a Samsung SPH I330. I realized that however good a PDA I would have, I would still be limited. So I returned them all, purchased an NX70 a cable and an LG5350. Now I have two, but they work much better than one and I can still surf the web and send email from my NX70 connected to my LG. :) I like it that way best. A good phone and an excellent PDA instead of an excellent phone and a mediocre PDA built into one.
However all that said, if the next NX PDA also works as a phone, I would probably purchase that.
SprintPCS has a CF Card modem/phone. Right now it is only for laptops and PPC. We need to get after them to write a driver for the NX/NZ. Here is a link to the cards manufactuer http://telecom.growell.co.kr/eng/product/pr_sub2.htm E-mail them or SprintPCS http://www.sprintpcs.com and apply pressure.

I purchased a cable to connect my phone to my NX atgomadic (http://www.gomadic.com). I was pleased with their service, they also gave me instructions on how to configure the phone and pda so they could "talk".

You can also connect your NX and a IR capable cell phone to browse, send and receive email just as you can do with a cable.
The good thing is you don't have to buy (and carry) any cables.

Yeah, but IR is a pain in the @$$ to keep connected.

infty,
Which length cable did you order. I think I like your solution enough that I may gomadic myself.
Thanks,
Jim

I know the motorola clamshells don't have IR at all (namely V60i, my model cell), but I know they sell connector cables. Does anyone use these cables? I know they sell one to connect a V60 and a T-series, but what about an NX? Anyone?

Jim,
I think that I purchased the regular length cables, but I wanted to measure them to make sure. However, I can't seem to find my cables, I used them last on Thusday and I hope I didn't leave them somewhere. I don't use them at hope since I have a WiFi card and wireless network at home. There are three parts, two cables -- one that plugs into the phone and one that plugs into the clie and there is a little cube that they both plug into.
I also purchased a serial cable that I use to plug into a serial/USB converter for my laptop. It's great to be able to use my phone to get internet access for my laptop whenever I'm away from a wireless hub. I think I paid an extra 10 bucks for that cable.
I'll let you know the length of the cable as soon as I fine mine...I hope it's soon.

Yes, gomadic (http://www.gomadic.com/motv6mobphon7.html) also sells cables that connect the nx to motorola v.60 phone.

I forgot to add, one of the things about gomadic (http://www.gomadic.com) is that there is a lifetime warantee and if you ever change pda or phone, they will send you a new cable to match the change for free!

Yeah, they do. I did a search for the NX to my LG phone and their price is the same as Gomadic's (http://www.gomadic.com) price, but it was only one cable.
With Gomadic, you get the ability to hook up not only your nx to the phone, but also your laptop. And if you have two pda's you can tell them you got another one and they'll give you another cable FREE to connect to the LG phone. And if you'll switch phones they'll also send you another FREE cable.
I think the Gomadic deal is much better.

I just want to remind you from a previous post, "the ability to connect from the PDA to your labtop" comes in the form of an additional serial cable that costs an additional 10 bucks.
