View Full Version : Does anyone like the palm datebook?

OK, I've used pocketpc forever and have switched to palm for the last year or so (it's the only way to sync to my mac). I love the nx. Contacts and tasks are fine. But I absolutely hate the datebook. I can't do multi-day events. What in the world????? That's just ridiculous to me. Also, I want to be able to see blocks of time/free time on my schedule. Like every other datebook program out there: Outlook, iCal, Palm Desktop, etc..... Does anyone have this frustration? I would love to stay with palm if they would just fix those two things. C'mon.

Nope.
I had never owned a palm before I got my NX.
As soon as I turned it on and looked at the built-in apps I immediately came here to find recommendations for a replacement of the datebook. Got Datebk5 that very day.

DateBk5 is unbelieveable (although occationally a bit _too_ much). The built-in is for soccer moms, not business people. It's adaquite if you only need a glorified alarm clock, but not much more.

I have been using the built-in one for over 9 years. It took me from High School to College and now at Grad. School.

To do multiday events...go to details...repeat everyday until X day.

Granted, I usually just have my school schedule and basic appointments with teachers or dates with friends, but I find it more then useful.

I don't like it, either. I use DateBk5 now...wonderful.

I LIKE THE BUILT IN DATEBOOK!
I just like it on a hidden tab and replaced by Datebk5! :D

I second the recommendation for DateBk5. It's astonishingly powerful, but the interface is more of a mixed bag: very similar to the built-in Datebook for common tasks, but occasionally needlessly complex for some of the more advanced features. Still, you have tremendous freedom to set it up to work the way you want, so it remains the gold standard for calendaring on either platform.

Since you use a Mac, it will also automatically preserve your appointment categories in Palm Desktop 4. I use this to automatically color-code my appointments by type. (Blue for business appointments, Grey for stylish martini evenings, etc.)

Back to the built-in Datebook, though, your point is well-taken. Since Palm still refers to its devices as organizers, it should provide a much more robust (and better looking) solution for calendaring. The only solution for the moment is simply not to use it.

I went to the website for Datebook, it look svery promising.

One question, does it support Hi-Res+ (320x480)??

Datebk5 you mean? Yes, it has wonderful support for hi-res+.

As far as the Palm Datebook, I have never used it. My first two Palm OS devices were Handspring Visors (first Deluxe, then Platinum). Both had an enhanced datebook based on an earlier version of Pimlico Software's Datebk. so I used that instead. Within a few months though, I purchased Datebk4 (now Datebk5), and haven't looked back since. The Palm Datebook on my Clie now resides in a hidden folder in ZLauncher.

Datebk is too busy for me. I prefer Iambic Agendus. It's simple, yet feature rich and very attractive.

Have had datebk from version 3 through 5 now. Couldn't be without out it a wonderful program.

Palm needs to include datebk5 into the rom like handspring did with datebk3 (lite)

Both Agendus and DateBK5 have some of their own 'positive' points.

I too, like almost all the other replies here ... prefer DateBK5 over anything else. Since they went to HiRes Icon Support..... just Gravy on an already wonderful application.

I've been testing out Datebk5 and so far I think it's fabulous. But it has (for me) one big drawback: no matching desktop app with the same interface.

For this reason, I've decided that I ought to try out Agendus (handheld and desktop) as well before buying.

So the question is:

If I install the Agendus trial and have Datebk5 on the handheld as well, is everything going to go nuts when I synch up? I mean, I'll have three datebook programs on the handheld synching with two on the desktop. That sounds dangerous.

I'm reluctant to temporarily remove datebk5, but maybe I should.

Agendus and Datebk5 are the leading calendar replacements for the native one. From the feedback over the last few years - datebk5 has the higher learning curve and has a few more features than Agendus (having said this, both are feature rich software).

Agendus has the advantage of having a PC interface that replaces the native datebook interface, but you can do almost all the same stuff from the outlook calendar etc.

From many users of datebk5 and Agendus, you won't regret purchasing either one of them!

Interestingly enough, of all the features on a PDA, the calendar is rated as one of the two top features sought in a PDA. The other is the launcher.
The funny thing is that there are only two main players for the calendar whilst the launcher interface has 10+ software to choose from, address book has about 8+ software and memo replacement (with encryption etc) numbers almost in the hundreds.

Pimlico has been putting out beta releases ... which are all free downloads.... by the time they release the BETAs... they are running very 'stable'. I paid for my DateBK5 .... no cost thus far in upgrades to the new BETAs they have released. ..... hopefully not for the next full release.

Even if there is a small charge ... well worth it!

Must have been using it on something other than a Palm, since the original Pilot 1000 and 5000 were released in Spring 1996 (just over 7 years ago):D

Anyway, count me in on Datebk5. Certainly my most used app.

So true. I went from the Visor Prism to my current Clie SJ30 and it the Palm Datebook lacked so much of what Datebk3 plus, that I had to upgrade to Datebk5.

Another Datebk5 supporter here as well. It has really organized my life in a way the built in program couldn't. And we won't even start on the advantages over the paper planners!

YIKES! Not all of us need the features (dare I say bloat?) of Datebk5. Besides, Palm would have to double the size of their manual ;)

It was a Pilot 1000, I did the math, I guess I got it Junior year instead of Freshman year....Either way its been a while.

I use the freeware A5 (http://rg.mirrorz.com/). It combines Palm DateBook and ToDo List. A5 can be assigned to hard button or use Hacks. A5Week Hack replaces the DateBook weekview. A5Agenda Hack replaces the DateBook agendaview.

A5 also uses the task & event icons from DateBK5, Agendus, and HandyShopper. I'm still collecting more icons for A5 and HandyShopper. These icons (http://www.cliesource.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=512&papass=&sort=1&thecat=500) are the ones I use for both apps, so far. Unfortunately, A5 is still using low color version of icons, as shown here (http://www.cliesource.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=513&papass=&sort=1&thecat=500).

Here (http://www.cliesource.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=463&papass=&sort=1&thecat=500) is the A5 weekview in grid. You can use jogdial to scroll the daily list and up/down to scroll the weekly view. If you like to see the whole daily view, you can put A5 in list. The HiRes view of the above grid would look something like this (http://www.cliesource.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=487&papass=&sort=1&thecat=500).

Tried DB5, but eventually returned to the standard datebook. I have little use for 90% of DB5's functionality, all I really miss is the 6 month overview.

The first time I tried DateBK5 I found it very confusing and didn't understand what all the fuss was about. I tried the earlier version DateBk3 and found a feel for it and eventually tried Datebk5 again.

I registered it immediately once I found out everything it could do. I guess if there's anything bad to say about DateBk5 is that it's one of those apps that you really have to read the manual.

'til this day I'm still amased at some of teh features I didn't know it has but can't live without once I start using them.

$25 for something I use on a daily basis is an awesome deal.

I think the biggest advantages DateBk5 has for me are:

HiRes+ (NR series, so the built-in Datebook isn't)
Icons
Colorizing different categories (so my ToDo categories are separate)
Integrated ToDos
Linking between ToDos/Appts/Addressbook entries

somebody mentioned that datebk 5 will sync over to mac palm 4 - but does your palm 4 desktop sync over to datebk 5 autamatically.

thanks

Actually, yes, I use and LOVE the built-in Palm Date/Calendar app. It's all I need and is WAYYYYYYY easier to use than Pocket Outlook and the MAIN reason I switched BACK to PalmOS from PPC. All of the other options, while good for others, are more complicated than I need.

The built in app has maintained its simplicity and I applaud Palm for this. The usefulness of an app like this for me is ease of use and speed.

I'm also using A5 since a couple of weeks or so. The trail of DateBk5 had ended. I have to say that DateBk5 is quite powerful, but I found out that I was using only a fraction of what the program has to offer.
After reading good stories about A5 I gave it a try. I liked it a lot and suits my needs perfectly. The fact that the icons are low-res doesn't bother me, because I use the "tiny" fontsize.

If you're looking for a bit more power then the built-in agenda, you wouldn't go wrong with A5, but if you're looking for a very good and powerfull do-it-all scheduling program you better go for DateBk5. That's my advice.

I use the built in tool........ it hold date, times and event.... and it tells me when I need to be somewhere before the event happens........ does everything it should........

........ if you want colour and flashiness go to PPC... but with this comes the issue of bloated unreliable fat software and poor battery life.......

.. keep it simple and it will always work first time everytime!!..

that's what I think anyway..

I don't like the UI for BateBk5. I think Agendus is much more streamlined.

(UH OH! I think I feel a flame war coming on!)

I agree that datebk5 is not as polished as agendus. At least that is the opinion until you learn it. I had used agendus for about 2 years and switched just a couple of weeks ago. Datebk5 is a much more advanced product IMO.

Giving agendus a try right now...Where can I get good .GIF wallpapers? Iīve been using some images I converted in paintshop, but they all look sucky.
