View Full Version : CF Speed?

One of the downfalls I heard about MemorySticks is how slow they were, and how fast Compact Flash is. Well now that the CompactFlash is up and running (good enough), how much faster is it?
Just wanted to hear some user's opinions. I'm buying a friend a digi-cam and am going to try to get the free card that comes with it be on the list of compatible ones. I see the list, but is there one that's like perfect or just performs really well.

I haven't done any tests lately, but a new CF driver version will be out shortly. So a better test can be made because of it being optimized :)
yep can't wait for the update version 1.1 :D
It might offer me a chance to use my 1G finally, well, hopefully that is. Since I still can't seem to get all my HighQ MQVs working in them.

That is somewhat of a myth.
Some Compact Flash cards are slow, some are fast.
The problem with memory sticks is they are limited by the serial bus (while CF have a parallel data bus)
They have fixed this somewhat with the MS Pro sticks, but not for the current PDAs.

With the first release, the speed was not overly impressive IMHO (the MemoryStick was generally on par or faster with a regular CF card)
Here are my old numbers:

There are many other VFS Mark number out there.
ayasin says the upcoming 1.1 update is over 60% faster, so I will re-run these tests when the update comes out.

If you are looking for speed, try to get a faster CF card (some people opt for capacity like the inexpensive 1GB SanDisks)
That's another nice thing about CF cards, you can pay a little more to get faster speeds (mostly for cameras)

Yes it works with the NZ90 I think and yes it works like the memory stick. There is also a masquerade option to make it act like the memory stick in certain programs such as Audioplayer etc.
