View Full Version : Using the cf driver without masquerading

I have not purchased the cf driver or a compact flash card as of yet because I wanted to see if the memory stick pro or the cf driver would be more useful to me. I am considering getting a viking cf card and using it in conjuction with the two 128 MB memory sticks I now have. From what I have read in the cf threads so far, most problems occur because of the fact that some apps (primarily sony apps) don't work well with the cf card. Eruware came up with the masquerading trick to get around this but so far this has not fully solved the problem. I think that I would be able to use a cf card without masquerading and so I believe that I should not have any problems. Let me describe my setup and my needs and please tell me if I am wrong in thinking that I don't need to masquerade. I use splash photo for picture viewing, palmreader for most of my ebooks, wordsmith for most of my editing and plucker for web content. I am not sure about plucker (I will switch to isolo if it becomes difficult to use plucker with a cf card) but I have read that every other vfs program I listed will read off of multiple cards and so will not need to be tricked via masquerading. If I am correct about this, then my next problem would be with multimedia. I have read that some people have had trouble listening to mp3s via the cf card (this seems to be one of the more uncommon cf problems). One of the major reasons to get a 1 gig memory stick or cf card would be to be able to carry a lot of mp3s around at once. Until someone figures out a way to make multiple playlists easier to use on a clie however, there is not much point to loading a ton of music that cannot be easily manipulated. What I plan to do is create folders arranged by album and genre on my cf card and then use cliefiles to load an album or two to the msaudio folder on one of my memory sticks. Is this easy to do or does it take a very long time per song to transfer? In the same way, I would store several standard and high quality movies on my cf card and would like to transfer them to another memory stick I would carry just for movies. Again is this realistic using cliefiles? Cliefiles moves large files from one folder to another folder on one card quickly enough but how does it do when moving from cf to ms? Any help is appreciated.

You are correct, the case that you are describing does not require masquesrading. As a matter of fact, almost no apps other than Sony apps (actually I don't konw of _any_ other than the Sony ones, but there may be one or two that look for a memory stick) require masquerading...in cases where multiple volumes are not supported, you can just pop out the MS and the CF becomes the only volume.

Thank you for your response. I have another question that you may be able to answer. Someone told me that cliefiles was not able to copy files from their cf card to their mem stick. Is this an issue that you know of with cliefiles and the cf driver? Are there any file managers that do transfer from cf to ms? If I am to use the driver without masquerading, then I would need to be able to copy albums of music and videos from my cf card to my memory stick.

In the latest beta that I am testing, moving files using Clie Files v1.0 back and forth between the MS and CF is no problem :).

This has never been an issue. You could always copy files using clie files, but clie files has a bug that doesn't allow you to copy files from a folder on either card to a folder with the exact same path and name on the other card. It thinks your trying to copy the file over itself. No other common file manager has this issue that I'm aware of (Zlauncher, McFiles both behave correctly I believe). As a workaround for the Clie Files bug, you can move files to a temporary folder and then move them to their final destination (or just rename one of the folders for the transfer and then name it back).

thank you to both of you. I will be buying the driver soon
One other way to help with the "playlist" problem is purchase many 32 or 64 Meg CF cards cheap and load a different album/playlist on each. I did this with SmartMedia Cards and a SM to CF adapter. This system works great for me.

Can you use Zlauncher to move files from MS to CF?
