Clie 615, Palm DT 2.6.3, OS 8.6 on a 2400 and OS 9.1 on a beige G3 (no, this is not the right time to make fun of my hardware please *g*):

#1 - I have all the necessary IrDA files, but still can't IR-sync with the 2400.

#2 - Since I don't have USB-Macs yet, I combined a Clie->Windows Serial-cable with a Windows-Serial->Mac-Serial cable to the Mac-printer port: works, but slow. On both machines max. 36k, mostly less, otherwise the connection gets dropped.

Any hints or ideas what the problem with either #1 or #2 could be and how to fix that? I looked around everywhere and was told a USB->Serial cable or adapter doesn't exist and wouldn't work in any case; does that sound correct?

Many thanks,
-tobias.

2400's rule!! Have a 400MHz G3 upgraded one sitting in my parents closet. I'll never sell it!!!!

I always found the IrDA on the 2400 slightly unreliable. I was never able to establish a cell phone connection with it. I suspect that was because it was IrDA 1.0, and not the newer 1.1 standard.

A few obvious things if I may:

1. In the Infrared control panel, is it set to IrDA and not IrTalk?
2. Leaving that control panel open, attempt to sync and do you see IrCOMM appears as a nearby device and do you see the connection occur? This will identify any possible hardware issues.
3. Finally, while having Transport Monitor disabled, adjust any settings you might have set for the IrDA Transport.

I definitely used to successfully sync my older Palm brand devices with my 2400, was unable to with a Clie S300 when it first came out (worked, but EXTREMELY unreliably).

Another option, is a USB PCI card for your minitower, and testing whether you are one of the lucky 2400 owners with CardBus support and a CardBus USB card (CardBus is 32bit PCMCIA). If you are not one of the lucky ones, you could always get the CardBus modification from MCE.

Best of luck!

jaydisc - many thanks for your input! I'll check tonight what the 2400 settings are; one odd thing is that I never had the IrDA cdev installed, so I just did that a few days ago.
I'm ripe for an iBook this summer, so I don't think I'll be pouring $$$ into the 2400, but it would be nice to get the syncing a bit faster than it is now with my rather wacky cabeling *g*. Like you, I want to keep that 2400 - they are rare enough.
