This may not be specifically what you are looking for, but HandStory and AvantGo may do what you want. You just need to set up the weather and news channels.

I really like the weather app from www.tinystocks.com. Has satellite imagery, too. It'll update when you hotsync or by modem/wireless.

I also use this program and it works very well and is simple to configure and forecasts are fairly accurate. I don't have it set to satellite images, no need there.
Very handy for planning next day's activities and want to know the weather and not near a computer or TV.
WorldMate is my best pick, for it sets the correct time and updates my weather forecast via hotsync or wireless.
It is a 'bit' pricy. But comes with a small worldmap and a basic currency converter as well. In the newest version it is also able to sync every city in the world. Try it.

Hi,
Worldmate alone will do OK, but Worldmate Professional is better: you have weather and weather forecasts for several regions AND uo-to-date exchange rates (Dollar, Euro...)

I use Handstory to get an updated seven day forecast, daily, for any city I want. Also get news, sports etc. Can do the same thing with Isilo (I have both), but I find Handstory to be much more user friendly, and I love it's ability to grab a web clip or picture from the web on the fly, in addition the scheduled updates.

I've used my Yahoo! homepage with local weather through Avantgo. When it works, it's great...problem is making my password stick for some reason. The nice thing about using this though is that you get movie info at local theaters too (and can also set the link depth to show what the movie is about, etc)
