I have an NX70 and need a charger / USB for Syncing at both home and work. I've seen this one http://www.glblsrc.com/shop/customer/product.php?productid=54
which looks good but I don't understand how it charges as well. Could anyone explain?

Unless anyone has any other recommendations for a similar product (I'm in the UK).

Thanks

Rob

Hi

I have recently bought a NX70 too and have spent the past few weeks acquiring the "bits and pieces" I needed!

I charges because the USB port is powered at 5V and it applies this to the appropriate pins on the connector.

There is no hot sych button on the cable, so you have to use he software one on the Clie.

I use the Brando cable you like too when I am in the office or traveling. I ordered it direct from Brando in Hong Kong and it arrived quickly and cheaply.

I also have a cable from Expansys - but that is more expensive and heavier than the Brando.

I admit to be being a fan of USB charging - because I travel and it reduced the number of chargers I have yo carry (otherwise I would have one for the PDA, mobile and bluetooth earpiece besides the pc!)

Hope this helps

Nigel

Yes, very helpful, thanks. (this is me, I've registered now).

I couldn't see how much Brando want for shipping in the UK - how much did they charge you?

I've now seen this one on Ebay which has a conventional plug which looks good too http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3732&item=3025420631&rd=1

The Brando one looks easier to carry though.

The shipping cost was US $3 and it arrived within a week.

If you are in a real hurry - expansys is best, they are often next day! A bit more expensive though.

This is a travel USB which I am about to order as a backup and for holidays (my wife gets a bit upset if I take the pc on hols!!!!)

http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=EXP_USB-TC-EU

It will work well with the Brando cable too.

I have also ordered a screen protector and emegency charger from Brando and they have worked very well.

Here is their URL

Hope this helps

USB charging is not as fast as the regular charger. The main reason is the limited current (amps) available at the USB port. It still works fine, just takes more time :).

I've seen someone offering two different versions of an USB cable.

1. USB charging cable.
2. USB charging cable w/ hotsync capabilities.

Obviously, 2. is more expensive than 1. Does anyone know if there is really a difference between 1. and 2. cablewise?

Yes

The cable with the synch capability has the data pins connected.

You are right about the charging time, but I feel it is worth the hassel compared to carrying 4 chargers with me around the world.

I also (very occasionally) have used the emergency chargeres (PP3 type) and they are very useful in a pinch!

I am even making one from scratch for my Bluetooth earpiece!

I am gradually coverting some of my associates to the pleasures of USB charging!!

I want to pick your brain about using a using PowerRun compared to zLauncher.

I have looked at the previous threads and I still don't get the difference.

I've used two cables, one is Brando recharger/Hotsync retractable and Innopocket recharger/Hotsync. The former is consist of quite thin cable line so it could easily be peeled off. The latter is quite solid-normal construction. So I returned the Brando and got Innopocket one.

Check out this site.

I wanted a sync button on the cable so I didn't have to use the software. This one has a nice solid button and an led to indicate data transfer. The company offers a number of cables.

That makes sense.

I have 2 cables - one for the office (heavy from Expansys) and one for travelling (Brando) and thta suits me fine.

The USB travel charger has now arrived for trips (like hols!) when I don't have the PC with me.

It looks good and the interchnageable plugs (US, Europe and UK) is great, I plan to test it later in the office

The unit seems to be rated at 1A so devices should charge faster than when they are on the PC USB.

Hope that you travels with the Clie are fun.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't knocking it at all, I was only trying to be informative. I was answering a question before it was asked. Experience is the best teacher, head-em off at the pass :D!

Hi Nigel!

There is a big difference and they both have different applications.

PowerRun creates a shortcut in RAM and moves the app with it's associated databases and files to the external memory card. When you run the app with PowerRun, it copies the files to RAM, when your done, it updates the databases and then copies them back to the external card, really neat :)!

Now the short cuts are also created with the same Creator ID as the app, so the HotSync manager can match it up with the desktop conduit and try to sync with it's desktop counterpart.

ZL launches apps from the Palm-Launcher folder, which is the preferred way if there are no associated databases or other files.

I hope that clears some of it up for you :)!

TealAlias just came out too, similar to PowerRun, but I have not tried it and it may not update databases (not sure).

No problem on the USB front. I was not aware of the current limitation of the USB port.

Looking at the small USB travel charger that has arrived, it looks like it will deliver upto 1A - so there will be lots to share when I need to charge the beasts up!

On the topic of PowerRun v zLauncher.

I think I get get it now.

PowerRun is best for any application that had a database and leaves everything nice and tidy within the RAM. Whilst making sure that updates are correctly saved onto the MS (in my case)
Since just about everything has a db of sort (if that included saved games, application preferences) then it does look to be the preferrred solution!

zLauncher is fine for anything else, I just cannot think what!!!

One last question then, How does PowerRun work with backup tools? (I use Card Backup v 2.0)

Thanks for your help

Nigel
