Can someone tell me of a CD riper software to make MP3 files that work with the sony software to play music or of a diffferent MP3 palyer for the NX70V?

I have limited sucess making MP3 files that the Sony software will play. What is the secret? I am using a normal Sony memory stick card not a Magic Gate card.

Can you describe 'limited success' ?

You can use an app like MusicMatch or CDex to rip the MP3's. Ususally the default settings to rip are fine, but make sure you are not using VBR (varible bit-rate) when encoding the songs. Any bitrate between 96kbps and 320kbps will work, but 160 or 192 will probably be the best trade off between size and quality.

I tried playing a 320kbps mp3 file (Enya - May It Be) on my NX60, though it plays fine, the song crackles quite noticeably.

Perhaps it required just too much processing power and that my clie couldn't handle it (?) :(

The file is perfect. It plays beautifully on any desktop computer.

I found this "minimum bitrate of 96kbps" in a couple of posts, but actually on my NX70 I can play MP3s with 80kbps as well. It might not be a big difference in size and quality. But I can squeeze a few more songs on my MS this way. Since I usually listen to them over my car speakers, the quality is still good enough.

I use MP3 Workshop 2.01 (http://myhome.iolfree.ie/~mp3workshop/) which is a bit old but it's Freeware and working quite nicely.

96KPS allows for approximately 17 decent size songs on a 128MB MS, using Cdex to rip files into an MP3 folder, and transferring into MSAUDIO folder on the MS.

96kbps works just fine, even Enya :)! Audio playback is clear and full range sounding. 16 Songs takes a little over 40MB. High rates just chew up a lot of memory with little benefit, IMHO :)!

Sampling rate is 44.1KHz, no VBR, and no copy protection turned on.

nah, not at 96KB/S. I use 96KB/S and I can fit nearly 40-50 songs on a 128MB memory stick.
