How long should it take to format an SD card

I have a Palm Treo 680 with 4-Gig SD card. I started a format of the card in the phone and I've been waiting about 6 minutes now and it still just says "Formatting".

How long should this take?

I gave up at about ten minutes. I then removed the battery, removed the card and formatted it in the computer's card reader. I then recopied the card's contents back to the card (from a backup of the card) and all is well.

It should take about 30 secs.
