Has anyone else had a problem with the external speaker shutting off. Mine has gone mute. It occasionally returns for hours at a time but goes mute again. I've done everything I know to remedy this on my own (Hard Reset doesn't cure it).

I'd love some ideas.

I did a hard reset and it went muted. Then I gave up for a while. One day, I did a hard reset for no apparent reason and the speaker came back alive again. Strange...

Mine comes and goes without resets. It's making me crazy.

That's so weird! Mine just started doing that today. I was just going to post to see if anyone else is having the same problem... And here you all are.
Well, now all we need is a solution...

My 665 went mute spontaniously. I tried resetting, then warm resetting, I didn't want to hard reset unless I had to. But then I turned it over to reset again and the sound came back. I don't know if it had anything to do with turning it over or if it was a coinsidence.

Not yet. I'm currently trying to find a pattern in it's muting and unmuting.

Same thing happened to my old T665 (wich is now my wife's PDA) it went mute one day, for about two days (with no sound at all) I did several hard and soft resets, but it never helped. Then, it went back on... and I haven't heard of the problem ever since... I actually posted about the problem then, but got no usefull reply (just as all of you). I guess there must be a reason for it... but is there anyone out there who can actually find such reason?

i had a simalar problem with my cell , the speaker would cut off and on, i took it apart and cleaned the contacts with rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip, seemed to do the trick, for now.

My T665 went mute today as well? Hmmm... Very disturbing, maybe we all have a Y2K03 bug?

Nothing I have done has directly made any difference to clear up the problem.

Currently my sound is back. I have no idea why. It's been back for 3 days now. Before this last time it came back, it would come back sometime after 12:00 pm and go away sometime after 3:00 pm. I was in the process of isolating some kind of pattern when it just stayed on.

I have no idea.

Well the sound on my T665 went mute today. I am very disappointed. This cant work because I need alarm and system sound.

In my case, I was playing a game using the headphone. When I removed the headphone, the system sound was gone. Strangely enough, I can still listen to music and hear game sound via the head phones but no system sound.

Any idea what is going on here??

I could find no solution but to send it in on warranty. It took about a week total. That included me finding my reciept. Turns out mine was a mechanical failure of some sort. Their repair bill was vague.

I installed all two of the upgrades available for the T665 from the Sony website.

After that the sound came back on. Really bizarrre.

Do you think I should send it back to Sony?

No. Not as long as you have sound. Mine came and went for about 3 months before it finally went completely mute. I had already installed those updates before I had trouble in the first place.

It really is a pain to send it back. But it was more of a pain not to have sound for me.

To all those that are experiencing mute problems with the T-665 (T-675 too)....try this...
When it mutes, IMMEDIATELY plug some headphones in and check to see if the sound is muted through them. If it IS muted, then there is apparently some sort of software glitch causing the audio to drop out, check your programs and delete those that may be suspect. If the sound isn't muted then the problem is mechanical. The tiny headphone jack is just that...tiny (Sony wanted to keep this thing small, remember?). Therefore, upon use, one should excersize caution. While headphones are plugged into the jack, don't allow the clie' to fall on the jack and don't allow anything (or anyone) to bend or manipulate the connector. The headphone pin should only be used to insert or remove the headphones. This jack shuts down the speaker output when headphones are inserted just like one on a portable radio/boom box, (it's an old method but cheap and effective.) If this jack is used extensively or if the jack is bumped when headphones are inserted, the contacts that shut down the speaker may not spring open (notice I wrote "spring", springs can wear out and may not spring back). I don't use my T-665 for MP3/Atrac playback, but for those that do, this may be your situation. I haven't noticed any audio dropout/mute problems (7 months old) but I have repaired this problem on a boombox that I have (a phillips head screwdriver & a clean soldering iron.) Guess what...it's a Sony too!!. Anywho, if any of you are adventurous, you can dissassemble the case and see if the headphone contacts are misaligned. If not, send it to Sony for warranty repair. Once it's repaired, be vigilant about that jack!
