I have a book I would like to read, but it is only being sold for Microsoft Reader. Is there any Palm software that will allow me to read this book. I assume the answer is no, but I thought I would take a chance and ask.

No, there's nothing available like that. (Unless it's unencrypted, which I doubt) Micro$oft is almost as bad as $ony with their proprietary garbage.

What's the book?  Maybe somebody knows an alternate download location in Palm format.   Worth a shot, at any rate.

The book is The Mucker by Edgar Rice Burroughs. As a teen I was a big Burroughs fan (Tarzan, John Carter of Mars, etc.), and this is one of his few books that I have never had the chance to read. I found it on Amazon in Microsoft Reader format only. They do have some hard copies of this book I could order, but I would really like to have an ebook version.

Ok, how about this:
Is there a converter for *.txt files to be read in Palm Reader, or does Palm Reader Pro have this capability?

I won't even bother with that Microsoft Reader....

I would recommend the tealdoc converter which can turn HTML RTF ant TXT in PDoc format. www.tealpoint.com . About the MS Reader Stuff... I think there's a decrypter for v1 arround, not sure though. Anyway, HTML is the best format for ebooks as it allows reformating for any device, any display size (TXT is not good as it usually has a fixed width and PDF doesn't even save words, it saves individual letters and their position on the sheet, which makes conversion to a different display size without zoom pretty hard

You bet!

I use Interparse (http://www.interparse.com/) to clean up 'messy' txt files (It's free!). (For example, PG has returns at the end of EACH LINE. I hate that and it looks really ugly when you turn it in to a Palm Doc. Interparse removes those & so much more quickly and painlessly.) After I have a 'cleaned up' txt file, I drag and drop it on DocInOut (http://www.palmblvd.com/software/pc/DocInOut-1999-05-22-palm-pc.html) which turns it into a .pdb that can be read by just about every palm reader other than Mobipucket. DocInOut is free as well.

HAVE FUN! :D

Gee t'anks, you're the best, Yellow Rose!

I downloaded the apps and everything works! People at work are really starting to notice how much utility and fun the Clie can have.

I downloaded interparse, but can't get the .lit file "into" the program to parse it out. I haven't even got to the DocinOut side of it yet. Help!!!

To Empire Devil,

Interparse worked for me because my file's were txt files, not .lit.

If you read the thread at the beginning, it is said that the Microsoft Reader .lit files don't have a converter yet. There may be a utility converter but I don't know of one...

Sorry.

What book do you want to convert from .lit? Is it not available any other way?

Just as a side-note: If you purchase a M$ Reader book, you can convert it to HTML using Clit.exe by Dan Jackson. Since you bought the book, and only convert it for your private use, I think it is perfectly legit.

Alex And interparse will strip html code out if you want it plain txt. But like Alexander states, it is only legal for your private use.

I'm not trying to add any confusion to the issue, but if you can convert into html you might as well use iSilo for the conversion and type. iSilo will keep all html formatting including colors, images, style etc. Much better reading than palm Doc format.  Go to isilo.com and download both isilo the reader for your palm and iSiloX the desktop converter companion.

Yes that is what I'd do if I had M$ Reader documents. Convert them first and then use iSiloX -> iSilo to read them.

Btw when you try to download clit12a.zip, make sure you LEFT-click on the link.

Use MobiPocket! The companion software on the PC will allow you to publish MS Docs to PRC format to be read on the CLie. ALso available are numnerous Burroughs books for the MObiPOcket. I coverted Txts DOcs to Mobi for most of the Mars Series.
