Bit of a newbie (to flash) question.

I've sussed out that flash files have to be saved in the PROGRAMS>MMFLASH folder, and also that they must have a .SWF file extension.

My understanding is that SWF is Shockwave Flash.

Does this mean that only SWF files can be played on the Clie Flashplayer (which I thought was a Macromedia player)?

What are the valid file formats/types that can be used? I also have flash files that have .exe extensions.

 ROTR.

As I understand it (and my understanding may be limited), the Clie Flash Player app will play only .SWF files--.EXE files will not play.

Also, you will not get any audio if the sound was encoded as MP3 unless you upgrade your Flash Player library file to a newer beta version that supports MP3 encoding (do a search to find the file.) .SWF files with WAV- or ADPCM-encoded sound seems to work just fine.

There may also be a limitation as far as what version of Flash was used to create the .SWF file, but I'm not sure.

I can say for the record that .SWF files created with SWiSH! v2.01 with WAV- or ADPCM-encoded audio works like a charm!

It's for Shockwave Flash 5 files only.

If you search Google, you can find a utilty that will actually take the .SWF file out of the .EXE file. It think its called EXE-to-SWF. Then the files will work on the Clie.

Thanks, I'll give it a go and let you know what happens.

OK, some good news and some bad news.

Good news is that using Flash Convert I converted the .exe to .swf.

Problem now is that I receive an error message stating that I have insufficient memory to run the .swf (the file is 300kb and I have over 4mb of ram free).

I tried a smaller .swf file, 120kb, same error message although part of the flash plays.

Any ideas? I couldn't find anything in the documentation.

You will probably need even more RAM free to run the file. Flash files usually need much more RAM to run than the actually file size. Some files just won't run at all because there is just not enough RAM on these 16MB units.

its not the ram its the cpu.. its too slow.. 200mhz is just too slow for some flash movie thats made to run on at least a Pentium II 233- 266 and even on that configuration it still lags sometimes. also depends on the video card.

Well, it's a combination of RAM and CPU, depending on the file.

I have the same problem - is it the format? I have read somewhere in this forum that people have to convert PPC flash to be compatible with Clie (?)

Thanks all, guess I'll have to wait for the NX500 with 400mhz processor and 64mb RAM..........

yes thats true.. its a combination of both but it depends on how complex the flash movie is.. because it only needs memory to load. but once its loaded its loaded.. unless if the flash movie will excecute a command then it needs memory.. but that would be so miniscule it doesnt even matter :P

When it says there is not enough RAM I would assume it means the Dynamic heap (which is 4MB on an NX) So, having more storage RAM available is not gonna help.

Anyway, some flash files might not run, but I have tried quite a lot and almost all did work.

Some are actually pretty cool. Sometimes I even think developing things for a Clie would be easier in Flash that it would be with Codewarrrio or such. You can play audio files, have moving graphics and such with hardly any effort in Flash.
