View Full Version : How fast can the E2's card reader read?

Hi,

I'm running a 16 GB class 6 card on my E2 (thanks Dmitry!) and I'm considering upgrading to a 32 GB card. But I'm wondering how fast the E2's card reader can read. In other words, I'd hate to spend the extra money for a class 6 card only to find out that the hardware in the E2 can't read any faster than class 4 anyway. Does anybody know whether this is a problem? Does anybody know how fast the card reader in the E2 can read? Thanks.

Gary

YRMV depending on what class of card you use. The TX and Centro have faster ARM speed than the 'crippled' E2. You may try a trial program to increase the "speed' of your E2 or try the trial by Dmitry.

Unfortunately since no one has a 32GB SDHC card we don't know if your speed will be any faster. You might want to get either a Centro or TX instead to compare their speeds. BTW you might have to consider getting the smaller (in size)SDHC card so for future use you can use it in a Centro.

Thanks for your reply. I guess what I'm trying to find out is whether the "crippled" E2 will read a class 6 card any quicker than a class 4 card. Does anybody know?

philpalm is wrong (it has little to do with the processor speed, AND cetro supports 32GB cards just fine) :)

T|E2 had a MAX speed of 20 MHz of the SD bus, and it's a 1-bit-wide bus.
that is thus a MAX possible speed of 2.5 MB/s

Thus you would notice some speed difference between a class 2 and a class 4 (but not much), but you would not notice any between a class 4 and a class 6.

True, he did ask for read speed. I suppose for some programs it is very important to use the proper folders in order to read certain files. Some programs like ISilo will search for the right folder when asked and leave a trailmarker to help it to find the right place later.

The main thing is that people will confuse read speed problems due to the hardware. Results will vary in interpreting read speed, but bottom line to the OP question is that the differences between class 4 and 6 is wasted in a classic palm device. If he was more specific my answer about the processor speed might have entered relative to the discussion.

Nonetheless the processor speed of an E2 sucks (unless you like longer battery life). I think getting a Centro is a better option if a person chooses to stay with a small 320 x 320 screen. (opps that is another thread)

Thanks, Dmitry, that's exactly what I wanted to know!
