There is all kinds of schemes being used these days because of piracy. Could you be a little more specific?

If you back up from his memory stick, you will set your device to have his hotsync name. Serial numbers for software usually work off the hotsync name of the unit you are installing the software on. As soon as you want to hotsync your unit to your computer, you are going to run into problems.
Most applications offer great demo periods, where you can use the application for a certain number of days before you are required to pay. If you want to try a game out, this is the way to go.

What if for instance you moved from a nx series to a nz series, then what do you do so you don't have to buy all over again.

Name your new unit with the same hotsync name.
I have had the same hotsync name on all 3 of my Clie units. Makes it easier because you don't have to reinstall everything on the desktop either.

I just moved from an N760C upto the NZ90 and only two of my programs had to have new serials. Both of the developers sent me new codes no problems. I'm not exactly sure how they did it but the serial was generated off the device id and user name. I don't remember giving the device id when I registered the thing in the first place?

You don't give them your serial# But the programs seem to only work on the old serial # they a getting wiser.Don't know a way around this, any ideas let me know other then depending on the developers. Thanks

In some cases you have to give them a serial number generated by the Clie. Each unit has it's unique serial number. Which I would call device specific. There was one developer that found a way around this, but because of peer pressure, he had withdrawn his app.
Let's say you own two Clies, some developers want you to pay for each one the software is loaded on. Similar to what Microsoft did with Windows XP.
