View Full Version : New clie not what you expected
Sony Employee

I have inside information that the next Clie will not be an NX series replacement, but an NZ90 with Wi-fi, 400 mHz, and a built-in GSM/GPRS phone. The clamshell will have a small speaker above the screen and a microphone below the keyboard, so it can be used like a flip phone. It's still going to have the camera, but it will now be 3 megapixels and have a better flash. It will also keep the replaceable battery, but will instead have TWO battery slots, even though it will only include one battery. The extra battery, if you choose to buy one, will be used to power the camera and flash or to recharge the first one when the Clie is not in use. This will be changeable in the preferences. Of course, all of these improvements will require some extra space, so entire back will be as big as the top part. Trust me, it's worth it. Oh yea, two memory stick slots.

No. Sony didn't find much success with the NZ90, so I'd imagine that they learn from their mistake of making it too big and release a similar unit in an NX form, or better yet, NR form.
Two battery slots, two MS slots, built-in Wifi, 400 MHz, and a 3 MP camera at 1 1/4 inches all around? Give me a break. No, wait, break IT in half and give me THAT unit.
Please. This is a great site. Get rid of unregistered posters and you'll make it even better.

So basicly, this thing is going to be a big as a laptop, and probably cost the same as a laptop, why not just buy a laptop?

You forgot to mention that the IR port has been replaced with a teleportation port that can beam not only software, but people and objects from the location of one Clie to another anywhere in the universe.

I know it's yet another rumor, and we've had enough of those recently, but I for one would certainly pay ($$$) for a top end Sony if it included GSM for True wireless e-mail. Don't need the camera, but would take it if the rest was true.

I seem to sense the the Sony Employee is really a crack smoking monkey that's been putting the bannanas in the wrong hole...
Puh-leeze! There is no way I'd believe that a device such as that would be coming out! And Mr. Employee, what you said about the T380's FCC release turned out not to be true.

Sounds like the first 4 figure PDA to me!!! I don't see why it'd have to be 1.25" thick all the way down though unless they go single door and stack the batteries. Fascinating concept idea, anyway.... If Sony had any brains they'd include some sort of belt clip holster with such a beast cuz it wouldn't be pocketable.
Sounds like another joke to me...

Guys, I hope you realize there are probably four "Sony Employee" unregistered users.
My philosophy is that after the effect of the NX leak a while back, Sony EXTREMELY holds back on the information of their upcoming high end model.

I second that...but it must be tri-band, GPRS, BT, and OS 5.2. Just like Samsung i500 with bigger screen. Been tempted to buy Nokia 9210i for sometimes now.

Everyone keeps saying that, but I haven't seen official numbers. There are 4-5 registered new NZ owners in the forum every week and multiple unregistered posters as well. I realize many people here don't like it, but the perception that it's a failure I haven't seen proven with hard numbers, just anecdotes. Last I checked the big three electronics store still had them on display and not that many boxes under the shelf, either. It's got a geewhiz factor like I've never seen. I'm sure Sony didn't do a production run nearly as big as the NX or TG as well. It's a high end device and obviously won't have the market demand as a lower priced model will.
As for the size, having lived with one for over 3 mo. now. I really don't see it being that much different than the NX. The one big disappointment has been aftermarket cases which have taken too long and not really showing a lot of effort, IMO.
I think this rumour is a great concept idea. Killer piece of hardware... I'd probably sell the dog or cat to get on...:D But it's a rumour, fun to talk about, but won't believe it till I see the pic/specsheet...

Sony Ericsson uses Symbian OS in their P800 while Clie can use Palm OS to attack different market segment.

just in case anyone was wondering, it almost sounds like "Sony Employee" is naming off the specs for the Sony Ericsson P800 which has a camera, BT, NZ-sized screen, and GRPS/GSM i believe, or something like that. However that runs on Symbian and uses MS Duo, not Dual...........Ridding this board of Unregistered users would make this forum much more enjoyable.
Did you hear about the Sony/Logitech/Nokia/Motorola/Microsoft joint venture to make a playstation controller that has a flip up swivel screen, BT uses GSM network, and charges by the minute to connect to your PS2 while you arent at home, and BT to connect while you are within range, the rumble feature enables the controller to be used like a back massager, the only thing it doesn't do is beat the game for you. Did i mention the camera that lets you screenshot your gameplay, and you can use the MS instead of the PS2 memory cards. It comes with an adapter that has 14 slots for MS, so you can have up to 14 GB of save game data!!!!! (Nuclear battery cell not included). THe model number is PS2-CONT-43891839021z6 LOOK FOR IT IN STORES THIS WEEK!

I agree with all the other posts here - SE does not sound credible as I cannot see why Sony Clie (i.e. GSM/GPRS) would compete with SonyEricsson, who have a very good Smartphone in the form of the P800.

From my perspective I don't want a phone that has weak PDA capabilities, I want a dynamite PDA that can retrieve e-mail without bluetooth or Wi-Fi (GSM for true wireless and international service). It would compete with Blackberry in my mind and not the phone segment. That doesn't give the 'Sony Employee' any more credibility, just my preference for features.
The one who said that there are many different persons posting with the name "Sony Employee" is right, i think, those specs don't even sound rational, thus making me believe that it was perhaps some sarcastic remark against other posts by "SE"...
Roni, so you believe the "real" SE remarks?

The only phones Sony makes are called SonyEricsson and theres no way they would release a Clie with GSM capabilities to rival the P800
This Sony employee is a right twat and I think the time has come for us to really get Cliesource NOT to allow unregistered users to participate in any of the forums!!
Lets have some meaningful threads here!!
As for this Sony employee.....you can stuff these rumours up your hind sight!! Wanker!!

At that point why wouldn't I just buy a laptop. That's the bigest thing I've ever seen It remeinds me of my old zaurs back in 93 that I used to have to get in my pocket with a crowbar! It would be very handy if I ever get mugged I could use it to bash my attackers brains out. There's never a good rock around when you need one. I could put it on my babies back because I'm not sure if I'm ready for her to crawl yet. This thing sounds great weight rooms all over the world will be stocking them. It's like buying free excersie gosh that sony thinks of everything.

ever tried Nokia's brick, the 9210? it's a bit bigger than it should be in my opinion, and it shape makes it hard for it to fit to almost any pocket

Unfortunately ..... most of us get sucked into the hype.
If, we would take a few minutes ... to just think about what is said .... it doesn't seem to make sense.
The 'rumor' or whatever it is called does not take into account many aspects of a true 'new product' coming out. Some Generic Statements.... with some details .... and we get all up in arms about it.
I have to agree with many wonderful USERS' statements in here. I have, and I believe most of you as well, much more belief when I receive information from people who are at least registered. I do not discredit, immediately, unregistered users. I do, however, take what an unregistered user says ..... with a huge SALT-BLOCK. We do seem to know who some of the larger/established users are here on ClieSource. I would think ..... if one was already a ClieUser ... they would be a registered users, and be able to partake in many conversations on this site. Not just pop-in ... state something ... and watch everyone get turned upside down.
That being said ...... I believe nothing which was said in regards to the original post for this thread.
A talk about the CPU is there ... which seems to be what is available 'today'. As many of us know .... there are more CPUs ready to hit the market as I write this... and soon after. Sony has done a fairly good job at using the newest and fastest CPUs when available. So a blanket statement .... that it will be a 400mhz processor .... is good for today ... but not when they will end up unveiling a new product in the CLIE line.
Built In Phone. I have a harder time believing this. I don't believe the NZ's form factor is built to be beneficial for such a built in device. With the way Mobile Phones are today .... the lighter the better. Plus ... Who would want their ears sliding all over the Tablet area of the Handheld? Face pushing on the buttons ... etc. I don't believe Sony has anything planned in this area for the current NZ line to migrate it to a cell Phone.
3mb Camera. Not necessary in a PDA. I would believe it more ... if they took the 2mp camera .. and added more features to it. Maybe ... higher amounts of zoom .... Wide-Angle style Shots (panoramic) ..... or something to that degree.
2 Battery Slots. I don't believe Sony will keep migrating to further increase the weight and size of a HandHeld. I think we all know the size/weight is really pushing the envelope of convenience.
The most interesting 'crap' of the insider's information ... is 2 memory stick slots. I find this laughable. I didn't see any mention of the BUS of the NZ to be 100% MS-PRO built. One would think.... with all the money Sony has spent in development of the PRO Sticks to handle high-speed transfer rates and Huge Storage capacity .... the replacement would be 100% built for it. No mention. Instead ..... a suggestion it would contain 2 memory slots. Why in the world would Sony waste so much space on two identical slots if you can go out and get 1gb MS cards? In Theory ... (according to Sony's Site)... the development of the MS-PROs ... can, in theory, go all the way up to 32gb. We have seen, only the first wave of the high-capacity sticks come out thus far. I have a hard time, once again, believing we will need 2 regular MS cards. One would think a 1GB card would be sufficient for a PDA at this point in time. Granted things change and the need for more storage will come. I also feel the increase of PRO cards will increase in storage space to meet those needs.
I think we all have probably thought of the things I've written here. Perhaps other things have been thought of but not put down in this posting as of yet.
I think it would be better served to ignore these lame posts where people simply talk out of their darkened orifice.
We are all much smarter than they are. I don't feel we need to get all up in arms about it.
Believe what you can see or if you feel it comes from a reputable person/site. If you see a 'review' from PalmInfoCenter or CliePlanet ... or PDAStreet .... with new things coming out ... .sure I'll read, and believe as we all would. Why??? Because they have established their sites as bringing us the truth ... and not rumors. Any Rumors I've found on their sites .... at least have some credible backing to them.
ok.... I can step off of my soap box now.
Have a great day everyone.... :)
Just one comment, 2 MS slots allow the user to put MS and MS devices (e.g., MS GPS).

Exactly, have your maps on one MS and use the other slot for the GPS. I think all PDAs need 2 slots to be really functional.
Also I don't believe that 1GB of expanded storeage is enough. By the time I have three movies, my CDs (in .ogg format) and a bunch of books on my 1GB CF card it is getting pretty close to full.
On my Axim I still have the SD card for everything else.
I think SE confused the new Clie PDA with this one (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=206111#post206111).
