I don't know about you, but I think Picsel Viewer looks fancy but is not too useful in reality.

I think picsel viewer sucks!

I second that! ;)

I think it's a great app. Being able to view email attachments is very handy. What's your objections to it? "I think it sucks" isn't very descriptive.

I've only found it marginally useful so far. It always crashes on opening .pdf or excel files with "Out of Memory", even when those files are well below 1mb.

And I still haven't been able to successfully zoom in enough to read straight .txt files.

Why does it suck?

- note: I do not own an OS5 clie

It is difficult to scroll pages, and zooming in and out is not a fast operation.

I would say the application is too graphical to read any moderate-size documents in a PDA.

I'll agree that trying to read a full-size document on a 320 by 320 screen involves a lot of scroling back and forth, which means it isn't ideal as, say, an ebook reader. For me, it is primarily a way to view documents people send as attachments, which otherwise I'd have no way to open.

And using it has a bit of a learning curve. Figuring out how to scroll in and out takes some practice. But it is possible. I can zoom in to the point that a single letter almost takes up the whole screen.

Have you been able to open .pdf and .xls files? Every time I try, I get "Out of memory". The files I was trying to open were <1mb.

Brighthand,

Okay, you have got a point. It is better than nothing when you don't have other means of opening those attachments, and since it doesn't take any RAM space, I can't really complain.

I tried to use it to read a one-page train schedule as well as an e-book in PDF format. Panning around and zooming in just drives me crazy in both instances.

If they could just add the reflow abilities from Repligo then it would be perfect, since it opens native files.

Or vice versa- Repligo could add the ability to open native files (I doubt it though, it's really a conversion type technology that allows any file to be viewed.)

i posted a threat about PV in clie apps... yea i find it cumbersome to use as far as navigating thru documents.. what really gets to me is that it resides in ROM and takes about 1 meg of precious real estate !! been looking for a way to move it to MS or delete it.. but my TG50 have no flah ROM. =((

Guys, check out the help in piscal viewer, there's a ton of really handy stylus gestures that really make things easier.
I have gotten to like piscal alot!

Even if your TG50 had flash, you can't remove it anyway since JackSprat won't be availble for the TG50.

I'll check out the stylus gestures in help-thanks! I know a couple like resize and next/previous page. If there are more that would be nice.

I wish the arrow keys functioned as screen up/down/left/right. That would make scrolling a lot easier.

After having a play with Piscal viewer and finding it useful for some things I thought a proper word processing program was needed, then to my disgust I found Sony had given us this Piscal viewer instead of Document to go. So I e-mailed Sony and was told Piscal viewer was a direct replacement! Well it may be good but i'm not going to write in memo for the rest of my life. Just thought I would share my disgust with everyone as I personally think Sony should try and use their programs a bit more before replacing something wonderful with something that only does half the job.

Can't you use JackFlash instead? Or is that only for putting things into the ROM? Oh well.. doesn't matter that much to me because I don't have the flash ROM either... :(... I would have really liked to have it though..

Anyways, my thoughts about Picsel Viewer... One thing that I can't stand about it is that it's almost always nearly impossible for to be able to view an entire page width wise while being comfortably readable.. The problem I find is that its anti-aliasing of everything makes the text difficult to read.. On the other hand, if something such as iSilo displays text that small, it's not anti-aliased, so it's very readable still. (I do realize that iSilo and Picsel Viewer work differently though). Hmm... the anti-aliasing looks nice when you're zoomed in.. but for viewing entire lines of text.. well, it's just not useful anymore..

Plus, I too can't stand how Picsel viewer refuses to open large files. In a way, this becomes rather pointless as I can't view half the files I want to. I'm not a PalmOS programmer, but would it not have been possible to either (A) read only the portion of the file that you're viewing or (B) to use excess internal memory or even a memory stick (it would be super slow.. but better) as swap space to "extend" the memory that Picsel Viewer could use...

Arg... Picsel Viewer was a replacement for Docs To Go? I think that I would have preferred Docs To Go over Picsel Viewer too.. unless Picsel Viewer didn't have so many limitations on the TG50.. but what can you do?

But since I have it, it was "free," and resides in the ROM.. I'll take it anyways.. Use it for what I can.. and try to close one eye when it chokes giving me "Memory Full" messages... The native PDF viewing (when it can handle it) is better than Adobe's PDF viewer (not even native, right?).. that's one redeeming quality lol.

Being able to open large PDFs would really be useful.. too bad... in one of my classes, the teacher posts a lot of things in huge PDF files (in excess of 10 MB). It would be nice to be able to view these anywhere.. but yah.. too bad..

I would never attempt to read an ebook on a PV, but it's handy when you really need to extract info from a Word / Excel / PDF file. It's also suitable for previewing PPTs, and makes for a decent alternative to Clie Viewer (since PV allows you to open jpegs from custom folders).
I have to admit though that UI in that app is far from perfect. It's fancy, but not something I'd call practical. I'm surprised it does not make a better use of TG50 buttons (at least the main ones).

Works great for me, just seems to have a compatability problem with Bluetooth .. I have experienced this many times... Soft reset always works.

Yeah, it's like the screen is just a little bit too small to make it really useful, so instead it's not very useful at all.

The fullscreen view works great on a 480x320 screen since Picsel works in landscape. With such a screen I can imagine actually using Picsel a lot for Word and PDF files, etc.

I cannot wait to try Picsel viewer on the TH55 --- I bet it will rock!
