Hi All:
I own a T615 and just purchased my first MS. I also purchased
a six in one card reader. I copied an excel file to my MS with
the card reader. I then loaded the MS Import/Export app from
the CD. I can't seem to open the file on the MS.
I am new to this so please be kind.
I know that I am probably missing something really simple.
I tried copying the Doc to Go app to the MS to see if that
would read the file. Nope......
I can open the Doc to Go app and can open all my other files
but I can't open the one on the MS. I can see it but it won't open.
Please help !!!!
and keep it simple
 :D

I don't think you can open Excel file in its native format inregardless whether it is in MS or in the internal memory. Program such as Doc to Go convert the Excel file to a file it can understand and hence it can open the file. A native Excel file, you would need Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet that has the capability to read the native file to be able to open it and you must have those in your Clie.
This is only my suggestion. There are other technical capability guys in this forum that might be able to suggest to you other way around it.

You will need an app like docs to go. I think you will also need to convert the .xls file using docs to go before transfering it via a hotsync. I have tried it directly via my MS and I couldn't open it.
You may have a copy of docs to go on your installation CD.

I have Docs to Go already installed in the RAM and on the MS.
I can open the app. on the MS but it doesn't see the file on the MS. I moved the file from RAM to MS. It works in RAM but not in MS. What am I missing?

Hi Linda B,
You need to put the file in a certain directory on the MS so that "Docs To Go" can find it. With my Clie I store all my documents under the following directory in MS and all document readers (including Docs To Go) can find them...
PALM/PROGRAM/MSFILES/
Your MSIMPORT application should be able to do this, or if you prefer you can create the directory on your PC (assuming you have MS reader on your PC) or finally create the directory using a Launcher app (such as Yi-Show) which support directory creation.
Docs To Go will not see your excel file if it's in the Root directory, so if you follow the above you should have no problem.
Ask again though if you still have no joy.
Good luck!!

DocstoGo does not read native file types, it converts them to a propriatary format. In order to put files on the MS, you need to open the desktop app and use the "add item" utility. I don't think there is any Palm OS app that reads the native .xls files.

Okay, I must really be brain dead here. I have the file I moved from the Clie to the MS. File name bank.pdb in directory of Palm/programs/MSfiles. I can see it in the tree structure when I use MS Gate. But when I look at the MS I can't see it. when I try to find it with Docs to Go, it's not there.
What the H... am I doing wrong. I know its something really stupid that I am forgeting. When does the app have to be. I have it in RAM and on the MS in palm/launcher.
Help !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would Zlauncher make this easlier to do?
Thanks

Doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong.
You can see it in RAM using DocsToGo.
Are you using MS Gate to move it to the MS? This is the best way.
Also, just a quick check, do you have "All" selected in the top-right dropdown menu within docs to go? Did you try "Card"?
I can see both RAM and Card with "All" selected.

Yes, I moved it using MS. I have two files in Docs to Go. One is on PDA the other one is on the MS. I can see the one in the PDA but not the one on the MS. Yes I have "all" selected. If I just select "card" I don't see anything.
I don't understand, everything looks like its where it should be, but it doesn't work. I am really confused.
Thanks for your help, do you have any other suggestions. I want to download a dictionary app and database to my MS, but I am scared I won't be able to get it to work. Thats why I am experimenting with this excel file in docs to go.

Linda,
My experience with MS is as follows:
Put you 615 in cradle and start MS import for the unit
Now go to my computer and open drive "E"
Open Palm, open launcher and paste the files you need into LAUNCHER. Do not install from hot sync( install to card) nor put any of your files into MS Files unless it's SUPPOSED to be there.

Thanks jimroad....I will try that when I get home....as I don't have the cradle at work.

First, the file needs to be in the /palm/programs/dxtg folder on the MS. You can try moving it there, but I think you still need to use the desktop DtG to get it to work, because it needs to know where the file is located.

Also, thanks mrphil. I will get this one of these days...I appreciate all your help. I copied the docs to go app to the MS and I can run that no problem. I just can't see the docs to go file that I moved to the stick.
