View Full Version : Dropped NX and Best Buy PSP

Well my worst fear happened. I dropped my NX from 2 feet on to a tile floor and ruined the screen. It lit up but the screen was white with lots of vertical black lines. The unit still worked since I was able to hot sync fine.
I went into my BB and talked to the service guy and he said to bring it in and they would attempt to fix it, and if they couldn't they would send it off to Sony. I'm thinking great, 2-3 weeks with out my NX. So the next day I packaged it back up and took it in. A different service guy looked at it and said "Yep, it's dead. Go to the PDA dept and get a new one". Within 20 minutes I was out the door with a brand new NX. I was always wary about those plans, but that was the best $70 I've ever spent.

Congratulations.
Hope, that I am as lucky as you when I need it once.
Actually already had it. While helping my small son on the toilet, I my Palm m105 fell out my pocket into the toilet.
After a night drying, it was up and running again. But after a few days, more and more vertical lines appeared.
I called Palm and told them what happend. They asked me to send it in. Three or four days later arrived a replacement unit. For free. Great customer service at Palm.

May my big green envious eye smash you, Naw just BB]
OH man your lucky, I had a similar case with my NR-70. I don't know what happened, i just pulled it out of my case and saw the ugly cracked LCD. So, like you, I went pack to BB with receite in hand. Although i just brought the pda, and not the rest of the box. When i got the counter the lady said "get another one, and there will be a 30 dollar restocking fee", cuz I didn't have the box. Sounds similar right? Well here is the plot twist. I decided to come back later with the whole package, and the new person at the return desk said " we do not cover this" and handed it back to me. So i went to Fry's and just bought a new NX-70
OH the anger. You lucky devil.

I've been very fortunate with the bb warranties as well.
I've simply explained that it wasn't working the way it did when I first bought it (of course not) and they've upgraded me each time.
I do purchase many things from there ( big screens, notebooks and etc. so I suppose that helps, but I sncerely believe that you can and will receive different treatment at different times from diferrent people.
This is bound to happen sooner or later when you are reading news on your pda while sitting on the toilet ;) Those tile floors in the bathrooms at work are unrelentingly hard...

lucky you, where is your BB?
At the BB i worked at they were pricks about returned stuff...which i guess they should be. They just lost out on what 500 bucks cause you dropped your stuff.
I guess screwing the big companies is ok though.

I think it depends on if he told them he dropped it.
He really didn't state what he told them.
If he lied about how the unit got to it's current state, then yea, he screwed the "big company".
But if he told the truth, then IMHO he did not screw anybody, but the company employees did (screw the company) at least according to my BB warranty.
Otherwise no, screwing the "big company" over is not okay.

Had the same experience at my local BB. Dropped it, half the screen went dead but there was no visible sign of damage (that's the key). Went to bb and had a new one withn 15 min. Would have been a lot easier if msbackup actually worked, but that's another story..

They never asked how it broke, just what was wrong with it. Didn't see a need to elaborate on the issue.

big companys didnt get big by not screwing their customers, and they waist their profits on the bonehead staff anyway, yes dipping it in h2o is a good way to "disable" thing that need to be returned. a small related item; went to the bank to cash my hard won check. old hag: i cant without 2 forms of ID, i had a dl and student id w/ pic and exp date, anger. next day.. young man: how would you like that/ 50s or 100s, its the people that are the X factor.

I think the "they screw us so we srew them" philosophy is ridiculous and just a cop-out to make you feel better about doing something you'd otherwise think is wrong/immoral. I'm not saying that I am an angel but I can at least (proudly) say I have moral clarity if I return something under warranty when I know I shoudln't be covered. I can admit that what I am doing is wrong, but hey I'm [fill in appropriate hardship here; for me it's: "broke, and a grad student with tons o' debt"], so I'm gonna do it anyway.
But never lose sight of the difference conceptually between what you as an individual think is right and wrong. I have just heard that proffered justification one too many times to justify something that people would not do but for that justficiation. And I think it reeks.

It was actually an accident and not done on purpose. Further, I told them exactly what happend (this guy laughed at the phone) and just asked them, what I could do with this unit, if it could be repaired.
The rest was up to them on how to handle my case. I thought, they might have been generous, because me telling them the truth and not trying to fool them.
Honesty allways pays off in the long term. :)

If one BB guy says theyll have to repair or or they wont exchange it or something, try someone else, or a different day, or a different location.

I can't ***** about Best Buy in Spokane, WA. I paid for the NR70 before it hit the shelf. There were some REAL problems with the first two units I owned. When the NX70 came out they volunteered to upgrade me to it. Read the fine print and know what your rights are. Those are non-negotiable. How you present yourself to these people is important. Leave all weapons at home, too!

other non-negotiable parts are that physical abuse isnt covered ;)

Put your hand on the heart.
We all know pretty well, what is right and wrong.
If they deliver more than they must, we have to be grateful for this generousity.
Some are more, some are less generous. Just stick to the truth, ask kindly for advice or help, and you are good off in the long term. :)

I think this one beats the Agendus vs Datebk topic. This one seems to get people very pissed off.

Man, i could have sworn that when i bought my Sony digicam at BB they told me that their warranty will cover anything except for acts of God. So, if i dropped the unit, or stepped on it, or did something else, they would either repair it (if repairable) or replace it w/ the same or comparable, or give me credit. I have yet to try this w/ BB but i was wondering.....my camera is 3 years old and i have a 4 year extended warranty. What is their policy on discontinued items? Do they typically give credit?

They will usually replace with a product of equal quality or price.

I wouldn't say it's Best buy's "generousity," but rather a teenager who doesn't care and it's a hell of a lot easier to tell a customer what they want and throw the broken unit in a pile than to spend an hour with a disgrunted customer becuase they didn't read the warranty agreement.
Don't kid yourself, this is where stores make their money. Best buy only marks up their PC's 5%, but pull their profit from the warranties.
They could actually never cover you. I thought it was funny someone said "but it was an accident," look at the agreement and I can gurantee they it's spelled out specficially that accidental damage (along with every other type of damage) is not covered. Unless you can somehow prove that it was an electronic failure (they will actually send it to the manufactuor to test the circuitry) then your not covered.
I bought a cell phone agreement for $60 & 3 years and every year when my agreement is up I take the phone in there and get $100 towards a new phone. Now the agreement states that the phone has to have a malfunction to it, but the kid selling me the phone said they don't care, and sure enough they don't; don't even ask.
BUT I'm sure if everyone starts breaking their NX's and the warranty quota's start leveling out, they will start having the kids enforcing what you really paid for, which is basically a worthless; luckily for now you get a lot more than you paid for when it comes to those warranties!
Mrsandman: read your agreement, the salesman lied to you (naaa!), but as I stated above the stores generally just cover it because your currently part of the large % of customers who never use their warranty.
Additionally, they will tell you they don't make commision off of selling you the products, which they don't. What they don't tell you is they do make commision off of those service plans; and I think they have some quota for additional accessories.

This is true. If anything the BB Supers and Managers will run around barking at you to sell those Service Plans. I remember getting a $250 dollar Service Plan at BB with my employee discount for like 15 bucks. Kinda funny:)

I haven't broken my NX (yet; only had it for a few days), but I got off to an odd start with it. I decided to buy it at Circuit City because the local Best Buy was a little sketchy by comparison. I got home and noticed the Sony tape seal on the box was broken. I thought it was odd, but opened the box and all the components were inside and wrapped. I took out the unit, and when I opened it the sticker on the front said "Dragonball 66MHz Processor!" Wait a minute, I thought it was 200MHz. When I looked on the back, it said NR70. I didn't know if the NX model was actually an NR body with a better processor, but I also noticed the cardboard CD holder was opened discretely, despite still being in its original bag. To play it safe, I took it back, and they replaced it no questions asked (the same day I bought it, however). Good thing I did take it back. Apparently someone else decided to screw the big companies by getting a free upgrade and slipping their old NR back in the box. Now that is definitely not cool, since CC reshelved the unit and if I was a little more ignorant I would have been screwed.

That's SO true! When I got my NX70, I had a 10% off "preferred customer" coupon I wanted to use. The first time I tried to buy it, I declined the warranty, which I believe pissed the little BB droog off, so he decided to apply his own interpretation to the coupon and not let me use it, citing the fact that it didn't specifically say it was good on PDAs (tho it didn't say it wasn't; it did say it was good for "computer accessories" and when I found the NX70 on bestbuy.com guess where it was? Under "computer accessories!").
So I took a small amount of pleasure in denying the guy the sale, went to another BB about 20min away and got my 10% discount.
The big difference in the two visits (besides perhaps the moods of the sales-trons) was that the first time, my partner (who was paying--it was my xmas prezzie) said, "Can we use this coupon?" and the second time I said to the guy, "....and I'm using this coupon on it too" as I handed him the coupon.

Wow, I would had just waited until the same time the next day and brought it back to the person that was charging the restocking fee.....one step further, I would had told them to keep the box from the brand new unit and waive the fee.
