Are you as excited about the Pre as I am? I have not had this level of interest in a Palm device for a long..... time....! It seems to have everything I have been looking for.... I was expecting "Cobalt" and we got this! Amazing concept and amazing device! I am lucky enough to be on the Sprint network and can't wait to be an early adopter... (I haven't wanted to do that in a long time!) Hopefully, Palm will release other devices with webOS this year that will help them on their road to greatness again..... Palm once was the leader in PDA's and innovator in smartphones..... time to regain their place in that world... :)

Good for you. I'm more stoked about Palm having modern hardware and software than the particular feature set of the Pre, but I'm still considering getting one. {ProfJonathan}

I can't wait as well and I'm HOPING that the rumor Feb 15th release date is correct. People been calling in Sprint and they been getting the release date as the 15th and same with bestbuy as well. That date is much earlier than I was thinking, I was thinking in mid-march early april. If they are right, I won't be complaining :D

That's the thing with smartphones as opposed to true PDA's, you have to wait on a phone carrier to supply the devices! :)

and thats exactly why I hate Palm going smartphone only. I would love to buy a PDA with WebOS, and others would as well. The iPods are doing very well for Apple. Come the day the Pre gets out I know my 755P will be morphing from a smartphone to a PDA.

The date won't be valentine's day. That would be too early. Pre supposedly still has to pass fcc, and of course there are a lot of kinks and minor annoyances in the OS, that's for sure. I can wait (well, until July or so, here in Europe).
Bettin my a** that Feb15 will bring us the PRO (people who are not geeks like us will obviously confuse the pre with the Treo Pro).

You beat me to it kulf. I've been reading that the Treo Pro is expected to be released on the 15th. We will see much more of the Pre online before we start seeing them in consumer's hands.

over at Brighthand, that the Pre will be released on March 15th:

They also mention that the date might get pushed back.

Wow, I'm surprised I missed that story at Brighthand. I hope Palm just makes sure they get everything right before release. They stated several times at CES that the WebOS wasn't finished yet. The Storm was released with a great need for a firmware upgrade right out of the gate and it really hurt public opinion of it. I can wait just a little longer. Hopefully everyone else can too.
Louis :)
Let's all wait until June or July...
It's so much easier to fix bugs if they are not yet "in the field"... Palm needs to keep up the good press. Although I can imagine that sprint is *really* keen on delivering the pre to the public...
Im Actualy Not Stoked on the PRE
I'm quite glad that palm has found a way to get out the muck but I'd rather spend my money accordingly:
Palm Centro: $46 if your with Verizon and NE2
Micro SD: 8gb: $10
Basic Calling plan: ------
Unlimited Data Plan: $30/month
USBMODEM.prc for Centro: $20
Either a Dell MINI 9/HP mini 1000 : <350/<$450
ddr2 2gb ram: $20
Micro BT dongle or internal <$20
In all: Under $600 for a Decent Mobile Workforce for Business/Student/Travel
Outcome:
Palm Centro with all the gifts of Palm OS5, Email, basic web browsing, meeting and appointments, Camera, Speakerphone, MP3
Netbook Under 3 pounds, 3-6 hour battery life, Intel Atom 1.6ghz, Good Screen, WinXP, Unlimited Anywhere Internet at 500kb-2500kb
I'm not stoked enough by the PRE to buy it when for a little more you could get a good quality netbook

It's the same comparison I read when people say: "I can get a more powerful notebook for the same money as that notebook". And you can get a MUCH more powerful PC...
Different products, different people. I want a Pre, I want a netbook, a powerful notebook and a "beast PC". Too many products, little money: I'll get the Pre to start. :D

I was at first, but not so sure now. This 'cloud computing' sounds to me like just a reason for cell companies to charge for airtime. I'm currently paying less than $100 for 2 non-smartphones. Having to sign on for data transfer likely means a $100 bill just for 1 smartphone. Unless wi-fi is available, I may be looking at something like on of HP's WinMobile PDAs when my TH55 kicks the bucket.

I think you make a very good observation.

You can do it over wifi and just use the cell data plan when wifi is not available. :)

Interesting observation, but not real comforting if you aren't near your PC "server". It's impossible to beat a removable card.

I did so with my TX, once you start doing it, you'll never take your card again. :)

It will be interesting to see if Verizon disables WiFi, assuming the Pre will go to Verizon eventually.
