View Full Version : How to hide a directory from an app?

Hi,

as I have been discussing in the NVBackup thread, my Documents to Go v. 7.006 hangs when opening, because it scans for files and if my 2GB SD card is inserted (and only in this case) it seems to get baffled by the amount of files (or files per directory?) in the card, mostly NVBackups.

I was advised to upgrade Docs2Go (no, thanks - I use it very rarely) and do file system checks on my card, which I did (I copied all files away from the card, check disk, then copied everything back). It didn't solve my problem.

My question: since Docs2Go should not be looking into the 310MB, 8247 files in /Palm/Programs/NVBackup at all, is there any way to hide this directory from it? Some hack, even if manual...?

I tried setting the "Hidden" and "System" bits on the directory using the UniCMD File manager, but it made no difference.

Ideas? Thanks!

Use a separate Backup card.

Use a separate Backup card.
Hhmm... that is a solution, but you see, I never switch cards at all, and I get my nightly backups done without ever thinking of the subject, it is very convenient. I only have (or need) one card.

If its Docs2Go that uses an inconvenient strategy (they changed it in more recent versions), and is buggy, I hoped I could get a solution that just circumvented this problem.

Well, yes. We also don't know how to hide an online community from a newly registered member...

Are there any special names in FAT ? For instance, does starting with a leading . help ?

And does it scan the whole card or just the Palm directory ? If just Palm, you could move the nvbackup dir to the card root dir.

Your final possibility is glaring hard at the DocsToGo icon just before you tap it and muttering a stream of barely audible threats, allowing certain keywords like 'Trash Bin' a little more volume.

Don't do that in public though.

After a while, once you've trained the thing enough, significantly raised eyebrows should be sufficient.

Was that the advice DataViz gave you by chance ?

I could not find a solution to the problem you are having plus I was experiencing many crashes always around the time I had used Docs2Go.
I emailed DataViz about issues I was having with the Docs2Go that came on the TX CD and their advice was unhelpfull bordering on insulting, basically, "we know about the problem and we feel the best solution is for you to give us some money and we will give you a version that doesn't make your TX hang or crash"

I too used it rarely and so deleted it and everything associated with it from RAM and after that my TX was running so much better.
It is still stuck in ROM which irks me a bit, making me have an app that is rubbish is not right.
Not one cent will that company get from me ;)

All the best, woz of oz

I'm afraid changing dir doesn't help, and if it did, I would have to ask Alex Pruss for an update to NVBackup, because currently the backup dir is not configurable... but the problem still persists wherever I place the backups on the card.

Check wozofoz's post - the thing resists even deletion. And it is totally disrespectful of my raised eyebrows.

No, it was someone else on this forum who upgraded and saw his problem solved.

Lucky you, you got to email them. :) I went to their site and they list three ways of getting support for Dosc2Go v7:

Your Support Policy for This Product

* Web Site: Over 90% of all support questions are answered on our web site.
* Phone: No support available.
* E-Mail (via Web Form): No support available.

The knowledge base doesn't have anything, even though it's a perfectly known problem. This would be easy to patch and fix. They'd just have to add an option to limit the file search to a specified directory. But it seems we, paying customers, don't deserve that.

I had anticipated you could run a DA or something with Apt to do the dir move before and after DocsToGo runs.

I believe it was I who suggested upgrading D2G. I use it infrequently as well, but the few times I do use it I want it to work. If you don't go the upgrade path, I believe that the "use a different card" option is best (they're so cheap nowadays).

Good Luck!
