View Full Version : Open Source Future for PalmOS ?

Log me in as impressed with webOS in its ability to keep up with the iphone, but log me out because if I wanted an iphone I would have BOUGHT an iphone already.

I'm one of those may Palm loyalists who have built up an application suite of software over the years, and have come to trust those applications to run my business and my life for more than 10 years now. The webOS may be Palm's chosen future, but I don't see if doing what the old PalmOS has done -- and continues to do for me with my Tx and 755p. All I ever wanted was a next-generation Tx with bigger screen, a workable hardconnected keyboard, in sum a foleo-like experience with snappy performance and with kinks ironed out!

I'm also one of those who noted that Jeff Hawkins hasn't been visible lately. It seems no coincidence that he always seemed the father of the tried and true ideas behind Palm's success in the first place -- I wouldn't imagine he'd be happy replacing the old vision with the glitz that seems to have taken over now.

I gather Access is sort of allowing it's Palm rights to be spread far and wide (such as giving away the Nokia palm emulator). So my point is this -- FINE if Palm wants to be the next Apple. Go to it! But why not let the current garnet system go open source, and let people like those who've made Linux desktops the alternative to Windows use the software for a new generation of machines that do the tablet vision that was always just down the road for the traditional PDA format?

Must we ALWAYS have software bloat at the expense of getting things done by refining existing tools!???

Is that what Dmitry is up to with DGOS? He's the man to take the bull by the horns to keep the traditional Palm OS alive!

What a darn shame if between Access and Palm one or both of them don't let the software go open source so that the platform doesn't waste away completely!

This ought to be a topic for a new web page, forum, etc., for the loyalists to pool resources. Does such a place already exist?

Yes, it is quite an exciting undertaking!! I'm looking forward to it and keeping my LD going and going.

Realistically, though, we also need the hardware to run the OS and software. There may come a time that I may not be able to get the spare parts I need to keep my LD alive. It's a bit banged up and a few light scratches, but it still performs like a champ! But I would like new hardware that could improve on the LD or TX without losing the traditional stuff I have come to expect in a PDA.

(Why should I have to connect to a monthly Data plan when I am quite content with just checking my PIM stuff and specialized apps?)

I don't want to end up in a PDA graveyard. :)

Hardware is not hard to write drivers for :)

This should be said again! I do not know much about Software writing, changing etc.
But I am using Palm OS for the last +-9Years and to me there is no better Software around!

If somebody would develop it a little bit, it would be many Peoples Favorite before Apple, Linux, (do not mention MS) and the Lot - not just Mobile Devices!!!

But Who is going to do it???

Who can persuade Access and Palm one or both of them to let the software go open source???

Is there already any effort in that Direction???
